Ok guys I was able to get to the indoor range after work and I got some initial numbers and some groups. This was just an initial shooting to see the velocities and some short range groups. Range is indoors and was shooting at the pistol range which only goes out to about 20 yards. So nothing extremely far by any means, but I was after some numbers to start with, and something to grow from.

Now for some numbers..........

Base line I used the FX 25.4 grain pellets

Power wheel at 12
Average 976 FPS
Spread 7 FPS
STD 2.1 FPS

A heck of a "standard" if you look at the numbers, but then looking at the group it isn't anything to be upset at. This is the group in the center of the target.

Then we went to slugs to see what would happen. I will say that all of the slugs went into the barrel MUCH smoother than they did at the last outing. Who would have guessed that a breech seal would make things much nicer!

I didn't like this one. And while I was sitting and talking with the RO it dawned on me.... I went from MAX power down to 12. So I went ahead and did another string of 10 shots to see if this was a fluke or actual numbers

Much better, but I still think that these will be able to do better with some more tuning and playing.

Again these were all shot at around 20 yards, so nothing long range about them. But it was able to give me a good enough insight on what the barrel is doing. I am also going to play with some weights as well to see if I can't get an EXACT weight for the slugs. Thammer did say that he was shooting around 26 grain or less slugs at 940 fps . I did go a little higher to see what will work, and I am glad that some of them did.

As soon as the rain settles down up here I am going to get some 50 yard and 100 yard groups from the barrel.

As of right now I am happy. Going to make up some slugs from 25.5 to 27.5 grain slugs. See if I can't dial in some bangers for the rifle.

Ah, the Red River. Brings back memories of spring floods. Glad you had the opportunity to get some testing done.

Yeah have done a few floods up here.....1998 was the worst and I remember sandbagging for days.

If the rain will stop I can get some more testing done. I am also talking with the guys at Corbin about a new punch for my set up as well. So if I get that I will have another slug I can make and try.


The one thing I didn't get to try was any of the boat tail slugs. I used all of them up when I was at the range last time. But I am going to see if I can't get some 26 grain boat tail slugs and see what those will do. Corbin has said that you need at least a 25 or higher grain slug going close to 1000fps to be usable. BUT I am curious if the 3 groove barrel will work with the lighter weight slugs

Found that @Pesty3782 had a spate tensioner....so once that gets here will install and go shooting again.

Please do a test at 100yd, at least 5x 5 shot groups with the ammo you think it prefers. 20yd is enough to see if a barrel is bad or not, but it just doesn’t distinguish barrels and ammo for slug shooting.

That has always been my plan..... but now mother nature seems to want to fight. Scattered rain and thunderstorms this evening. Will be a day or two and I will get some information for you guys!

Ok went out shooting with Ndwind today. Though I forgot my Corbin slugs here at the house, I did grab some of the h&n, fx, and Howler slugs.

The howlers were shooting at 1050fps eith a decent group at 50 yards! The fx didn't shoot worth a darn, and the h&n 27 grain were shooting at 910fps with a single ragged hole. Did this with quite a few mags, as well did NDwind. So will replicate that round with the Corbin, and actually bring them next time!

Had planned for more shooting, but Ndwind brought out his original cowboy lever guns....and needless to say the air was pushed aside.


Wanted to add that the numbers for deviations were great and under 8 for all rounds. The gun is functioning great and I have no issues. She seems to be sipping air as well which is good. Would like to use some heavier slugs, but don't think they will work.

Ok now for the report.....after I got home and cleaned up and grabbed a bite to eat.

I retested with the H&N 218 diameter at 27 grains. At the 25 yards I was able to get a nice one hole group with an average speed of 939 fps, spread of 25 fps, and a standard deviation of 6.6 fps, with the power wheel at 10 to start. Not to bad, but I know the rifle can do better. But this was a good base point and a good start.

I then loaded up some of the Corbin slugs that I made up with the same weight. These were shooting at 966 fps average with a spread of 10 fps and a standard deviation of 2.9 fps! The grouping was a little larger at 25 yards, and even larger at 50 yards.

STD - 4.5 fps

These were the main slugs that I wanted to try at both 25 and 50 yards. While the H&N and Corbin in 27 grain shot great at 25 yards at 50 not so much. I did play with the speeds a bit to see if more speed was needed, but things got worse! So backed down the power wheel to see what will happen. The lowest speed I took the rifle to was 880 fps and the groups got better, but nothing to be happy with at 50 yards.

Before packing up and heading home I found a stash of 31 grain slugs I had made. So figured what the heck lets toss them through just to see what happens. I was playing around with the speeds and wound up on an average speed of 909 fps with a spread of 10 fps and a Standard Deviation of 3.0 fps! And the best part was the grouping I was getting at 50 yards. There were 6 rounds dang near in the same tiny .218" hole! Then I ended up buggering up the group and pulled the other 4 rounds. Now I am also going to say that I shoot like garbage in the underground range up here, I shoot MUCH better outdoors. The wind swirls and variations are weird in this range and I always find things are worse down there than outside on a somewhat winy day.

The one thing that I can say is that this Ghost is a machine....... the rifle just shoots nice and smooth. As well as EXTREMELY consistent with the numbers. Add those constant numbers with accuracy of the weights I am able to make with the Corbin S-Press, will make this gun an absolute laser!



So the plan for the next batch of slugs.. The 31 grain slugs shot very well at the 900 fps range. So going to go with some 29, 29.5, 30, 30.5, 31, 31.5, and 32 grain slugs. Going to try and really dial in where the barrel shoots. It is starting to look like the gun may like the medium weight slugs at the 900 fps range. The good thing with this is that I can get 3 to 4 mags worth of shooting before needing to charge with air. So a good afternoon of hunting on the farm!

@Woogie_man, have you had a chance to do any 100 yard groups, and can you post pics of any groups you have shot at 50+ yards?

I am on the AOA wait list for a submoa .22 Ghost barrel, but that may be several months, and if Thammers barrels shoot slugs at MOA or better at 100-150 yard range, I may go that route instead.
