Ghost YOUR GHOST TUNE share and care thread

A mellower tune for shorter distances.

Ghost HP 22 cal
25.39 MRDs
145 bar
PW=2

My Vet Long is set up pretty close to your tune for the .22 MRDs, main difference is a reg of 140bar, but just about the same fps. My Vet Long has a normal 12 land and groove 1:18 twist rate. Itll push em to 960, but accuracy gets worse and worse as speed increases. Sweet spot for my particular Vet Long barrel is 890-900, and I think it's related to twist rate and how that plays with the weight and length of the .22 MRD.

How are they shooting that slow from the Ghost? I'm curious about how the poly rifling is doing at that speed. Supposedly the .22 HP barrels have a slower twist rate. I know the .22 GHOST HP barrel that I played with was something like 1:30 if I remember correctly. Another reason I ask is that most guys with Daystate/BRK polygonal .22 barrels seems to think that north of 940fps, and some even in the high 900s, approaching 1000fps, is where it's at for those barrels. The particular .22 Ghost HP barrel that I spent a few months with seemed best at 930-940fps with the MRDs.

It came tuned at 960 FPS from AoA tuned with MRDs. Accuracy was superb. That's too much for my home range at 35 yards.

The 900 FPS is shooting one ragged hole. I'm still becoming familiar with my trigger mod and it could probably be better.

My set up: 177 HP, FX V2 mounted left side picatinny, Wika black face 0-250 bar bottle gauge (the stock gauge is lame in my opinion, too small of a scale, normal fill pressure in RED, and it underread the pressure by 25+ bar), Sekhmet Digital Reg gauge (for the ability to read more accurately and read small changes in pressure), LP Hammer Spring, Reg Pressure 2900 psi (200 barg), I hand pump and never let it get below 210 barg since I don't want to break a sweat pumping it back up, so setting the Reg to 200 bar means the there is more air in the plenum, its at higher energy so need less to push the pellet, and at that pressure each setting of the power wheel results in a change in velocity. JSB Heavy PW 15; H&N Baracuda Match PW 16 for ~870 ft/s. I need to go to the MP spring for the JSB Monster (PW 3) and Beast (PW 7). The MP spring pushes the lighter pellets >980 ft/s on PW MIN, so currently thinking I am going to add a nylon washer -shim(s) prior to installing the LP hammer spring to see if I can get all 4 pellets in the ~870 ft/s without having to change out the hammer spring.

Might be difficult because of design. I put a washer behind the spring on the pin of the wheel and it came off when shot. Didn’t experiment further.

Looking at the parts diagram, I was thinking that the washer would go in before the hammer spring, as it appears that that surface is flat and thus the hammer spring would hold it in place. Also the M5 nylon washer appears to be just the right diameter ...and I found this

Mine has an adjustable hammer like the one in photo. The first two Ghosts in the United States have an adjustable nose (stroke length). No idea why they did away with it on later guns.

Hey tec so your hand pumping a 480cc bottle?! I always wondered how doable that would be! I hand pump as well and am hoping to get a ghost HP in spring and hand pump away. It will be .22 so not super air hungry. I also heard the factory gauge on it is kinda lame, sad for that kinda money!

The first fill will make you warm for sure, I believe I stopped ~3/4 of the way on that first fill because the pump was dumb hot too...I don't let the bottle pressure get below 200 bar before pumping. Only takes a couple min to get it back to 250. Yes the OEM bottle gauge in my opinion is not in line with the rest of the gun's quality build. And why the 200 to 250 range is Red ...make no sense in the compressed gas world...as Red means you are over pressure.

Yeah I blew out an o-ring on my Hill hand pump after a few months of use and had to shop around for new ones as it came with no spares🤦‍♂️ Definitely pays to take a break halfway through for you, and the pump. With that high a reg pressure how many shots you getting on a 250 bar fill?

I haven't counted yet, as I am still learning about the rifle's *performance and still trying to (I haven't had a lot of time since getting the rifle):
1. Find the optimal velocity for my barrel and pellet(s) (precision)
2. Find the settings that gives the lowest spread and std deviation on velocity
But next time I get time on the gun I will.
*If you don't wait ~25 seconds, between shots, the plenum pressure is lower and the shot velocity is higher, and this will trend ...so I shot a magazine with ~4 seconds between shots and each shot was slight higher velocity till around the 7-8 shot then it plateaued...

First thanks to "Franklink" for all of the guidance and support!
I eventually used a 3/8" OD x 1/8" Nylon Spacer (Ace Hardware), and had to sand it's "length" down to 0.1220" (3.10 mm) to get the lighter pellets under 900 ft/s with the PW at Min. The shim/spacer goes in between the hammer and hammer spring and fits nicely. So now I can shoot any of the 177 pellets that I would want to shoot, and not have to change out the Hammer Spring to the MP for the heavier pellets.
I have this

1702134217450.webp

set at 50 yrd and from the upstairs, now sadly empty bedroom, bipod on the window sill, I hit the paddles with every shot, maintaining center of paddle on the crosshairs, with every shot except #11, that Beast missed low. So even though different pellets...they all stay within that paddle diameter at 50 yards
Again, shot to shot velocity varies depending on how much time you give the Regulator to recharge the plenum. Lower plenum pressure results in increased shot velocity because there is less force holding the valve closed for the Hammer to overcome. With the Sehkmet digital on the Reg Press port, it takes ~25 seconds after a shot to reach the "set pressure", and it records 35-50 psi drop in pressure with each shot depending on PW setting.
And to add to Franklin's observation, the regulator "creeps" overtime, increasing the plenum pressure, so the first shot or two will be lower velocity....my ~2900 psi "set pressure" is actually more like ~2950 psi so its ~2900 while shooting and when sitting idle for several hours it will eventually creep up to ~3000 psi
Cheers!

Agreed, Franklink is the bomb on all his info sharing on this fairly new platform. I am using all this info to gauge my purchase possibly some day! So why the crazy high reg pressures? I feel (esp on .177) that it is waaaay high and although the valve seems to be OK with it would not around 120-150bar be ideal? I get that the wheel now adjusts your speeds up and down now but that def isn't much of a spread. Also how long of a wait would we be talking about between shots on your gun to keep it shooting consistently? I would purchase this gun to pick up where my S510 leaves off, I have no interest in dialing it down to 20fpe or less. I would want the full 50fpe 💪 in (.22), and then patiently wait for a slug barrel and/or a .30 cal barrel.

How did you arrive at the 200bar reg pressure?

That's pretty high, and might be reducing your fpe. The valves in the Ghost have this counterintuitive behavior where the power output starts to go down above a certain reg pressure (all other adjustments left the same).
Mine seems to be around 150bar.

Any reg creep you're seeing is likely b/c your reg is set so high, ditto for slow refill rates of the plenum.

But hey, if that's what it takes to achieve your goals/uses than go with it.

In regards to the reduced power at higher reg pressures, my simple cause and effect thought process is the following.....

The air in the plenum is keeping the valve seat/poppet closed. The action of firing the gun makes the hammer fly forward and tap on that valve stem, thereby opening it slightly and letting the air flow out through the transfer port up and into the barrel. The higher reg pressure means more force keeping that valve sealed, so hitting it with the same net force (a function of hammer weight/hammer spring/hammer spring preload) means less air released, ie less power.

That is of course when the reg pressure is in that power band. Conversely, reducing the reg pressure too low means you don't have enough pressure available in the plenum to propel the pellet at the desired speed.

This is a lot about the relative fps/fpe desired for a certain projectile.

There's also the concept of valve dwell, which in my simple thought process is just a reference to variances in the split second of the valve being open. I played with shimming the poppet return spring inside the valve and was rewarded with a snappier shot cycle and perhaps more efficiency. But the valve i was doing that with developed a leak, so I abandoned that idea. I'm not 100% certain that shimming the poppet return spring was the cause of the leak, but I've not had a leaky valve with the current valve installed as OEM. So I can't recommend shimming the valve return spring.

It's all a balancing act of adjusting the parameters to get the gun to do what you want. And the cool thing about the Ghost is that there is more than one way to skin the cat. Ie, a certain fps from a certain pellet/slug can be achieved through various methods.
