Others Some thoughts on GX compressors

I noticed that as soon as you got away from household ..lol

Our company gets the Miltons to be used on the above 300 psi mill air . ( Why my stuff has them ..lol) . Anyway it's hard to trust something you can't go reference 🥴 . Idk. That suker pops loose at 3 grand and slaps you face you'll rethink on one to use next I guess
For sure. I stand far enough away from it during charging. My GX did come with a whip and it does seem to have the correct amount of ball bearings in the female coupling. So I have faith it was at least designed correctly, even if the specs are thousand's off.

All it takes is to forget to de-pressurize the pump before disconnection and you'll probably get your hand (or something else) slapped🤜🫨

Ok, excellent information from a person who obviously knows what he is talking about. My problem is I am not well versed in working on high pressure compressors. My manuals for the several compressors I have owned [which all previous ones have failed after about one year ] do not have any instructions about how to do the detailed type of maintenance that Bchannell is talking about. All I do is follow what my manual says to do. The manual never mentions keeping the gauge block and fill line below the gun when filling. In fact, this is the first time I have ever heard of this procedure. I do watch you-tube videos on repairing various items and find them to be quite helpful; however, I do not attempt complex repairs based on those videos. I do NOT want to tear down a compressor and lube the piston, or even inspect it. There are so many unanswered questions. When reassembling the compressor how much torque is applied to the head bolts? How much lube is enough? When cleaning the compressor cylinder do I just wipe it off with a rag or do I use carburetor cleaner on it? And so forth.

I depend on the manufacturer telling me EXACTLY what to do to maintain the compressor. If they fail to do that can anyone reasonably expect me to get involved in tearing the machine down after one year of operation and perform maintenance that the manual fails to explain to me about how I would go about this maintenance? Can the manufacturer selling mail order expect a customer to pay the freight every year to mail the compressor back to them, pay for the service, then pay the delivery charges to get it back?

IMO, compressors are not being built well enough if all this detailed effort is required to keep them running. I want to shoot & not spend my time and money keeping my compressor running. Naturally, every machine requires maintenance. However, my lawnmower [gas] doesn’t require a tear-down every year. Sharpen the blades, clean or replace the air filter, maybe replace the spark plug? Even an oil change is fairly easy. In my experience the manuals tell the user how to do these things. Plus, information on internal combustion engines is widespread. Information on high pressure compressor maintenance is not widespread.

At this point I feel trapped. The PCP airgun shooter has to have a good compressor for today’s high pressure air guns. We are climbing to 300 bar being normal because the airgun technology is advancing rapidly and the high pressure gives the user a lot more shots. I like the idea of using higher pressure to increase my shot count. But if the compressors are going to fail after a year or so, especially if straining to reach higher fill pressures, unless extra beyond the manual maintenance is performed, what the heck? Is there any way out of this? Do I have to take a course in high pressure compressor repair? This is extremely frustrating for me. I don’t know about other PCP air gun shooters but the compressor failure problem seems to be acute. This endeavor is expensive already and replacing compressors every few years just isn’t feasible for an average person, IMO. AD2
This points to a dilemma, if a manufacturer makes a compressor that needs less maintenance, that adds cost. As you know, cost is a killer. Printing a service manual adds cost (also liability). So you have to choose, expensive compressor with little maintenance or compressors like GX.
I think the company made a wise choice, knowing airgunners are naturally tinkerer. The maintenance is not difficult, or even difficult to learn. But if you don't want to do it, then here's another idea. A CS2 can be had for...$200 or less. You could run it with no maintenance and on average get something like 2 years out of it (educated guess here), that works out to $100 per year for air. That's far less than I pay for nitrogen to pump thru my GX compressors! Not a bad deal.

But I would get one with auto shutoff for a few dollars more around $200.00. otherwise you have to constantly watch your fill gauge to turn it off when it reaches the psi you pick on the dial. Just a thought and much less hassle!

Exactly . What's the point of pcp if you don't one upmanship ? What was I thinking ...🤧. If it ain't thousands it ain't pcp .😇

Actually it's mostly to lay waste to pests at long range.😎 I hit a bird with my .177 TX at a (verified) 75Yards.... he got away though 😓 I immediately tested remaining energy of the 8.44 ammo through various mediums @ 75Y and realized she still had the power, my shot was just a little off. Had it been my S510 or Ghost same hit he'd a been down and a quick follow up would've done the job. Being a diesel mechanic pcps really make sense to me, got the tools already, I deal with air, fuel, hydraulic systems most days (many at the exact same pressures or more!) Buying lower dollar stuff can be totally fine with the caveat being...is it still safe to fill to 3k plus psi! I enjoy saving money but not at the cost of manufacturer preventable injuries. My fill system has been running strong for 1.5 yrs now for under $500 anyways (handpump and my sweat😂)

Spend spend spend. That's the life of an owner of multiple PCP air rifles and compressors! It's just how it is......
I say it's pcp ... Pay Continue Paying 😉

It's ashame about this cost and headache for air . I mean there's a lot of nice pcp guns I'd love to try out .. like I say it's really not the guns but there support that kills the deal for me.. oh well back to trusty ol springers ..lol

Thats why Harbor Freight is so popular. (Or Tractor supply) depending where your located.

Very competively priced stuff out there, but there are some cons to the cheapest models. Safety being the priority, even though many guys are very skilled mechanically, some models could cause injuries even while following safety guidelines.

I may have spent more, but I still went with HAM recomendations of fittings just to be extra safe. I have to agree with the HAM editor that theres no standards for some fittings universally, which "could" cause a failure.

I agree "I enjoy saving money but not at the cost of manufacturer preventable injuries".

Great point.

As long as you take into account the TOTAL cost for PCP, and accept that, its not too bad.

Yes, when you add all the components together, it can get up there. But I felt it was a worthwhile investment for under 1K. Sure, I would rather get a nice bolt gun and scope for the same price, but the PCP airgun is just another type of system to enjoy.

I like my little 177 Crossman pump I resurected, but it doesnt do what the 22 can. I still have to add a springer to my collection too. But I swear everytime I get the itch to get another one, a deal comes up I cant pass on. Most recently a nice vintage 1903A3. ;)

The addiction is ALL firearms. lol

Stay safe brother

Our tractor supply stuff is stupidly priced . One of the most expensive places to shop around here.. it's a if no one else local has it and you need it that day .. sometime they have a deer corn on sale cause it's been sitting too long that's about it .

I also noticed harbor freight ain't so discount anymore on a lot of common stuff that they were before ..

Why not change your handle to @PCPbasher? Or PCPhater give it a rest, for myself? You are simply going to be the first person “ever” on my ignore list. Or maybe @OneNoteMcNasty? Yup I think you are going on my ignore list as “all” you do is “doom and gloom” on PCPs…

So what . (Hang on I got to wipe my tears ) . don't like it ignor and move on .. like who are you to me ?

Shit to you, as you to me, but what do you contribute? Diatribe and hate… all you do is effing gripe… give it a rest… Yodoyle…
I call a spade a spade and not applaud smoke blowing up my as.. you can't take the bad with the good well to bad ..

I have noticed that about tractor supply as well. In IL they had blains farm and fleet, which I thought had great prices on all kinds of stuff as well. HF recently did drop thier coupons and changed the way they discounted stuff as well. Used to be a deal on many things, but now you have to wait to get it on sale.

I repectfully must say that you are entitled to your opinions. The purpose of this thread is "Thoughts on GX Compressors".

I always welcome others that have different views on all airgun system products as that is why we share information. It also helps to further others in deciding what they may want to purchase or invest in the future.

In no shape, form or fashion did I say or imply that @Hateful McNasty is not “entitled” to his/her opinion… I simply pointed out, which can be verified across many threads(posts. His constant hating on anything PCP. I come to this site for the fraternity, not to disparage what others choose to send projectiles with. His comments against PCPs? A few times? No biggie, but as a constant flow of negativity against anything PCP related…? I take it your handle is Retired Law Enforcement and badge number? If so, thank you for your service.🇺🇸

Sincerely,

Luis Leon

Thank you for your support ! 26 years. Little more with military time.

I appreciate the explaination and agree that participation and discussion is part of the comraderie for all things air guns. "Bashing or hating all things PCP negatively" maybe his view or opinion on that type of system? He prefers springer systems, and if that is all I had, he is likely partial to them more than PCP.

After a long career of dealing with everyone "hating, spitting, fighting, defunding, negatively treated, untrusted, etc" because of the uniform(s) and duty(s) I performed, I dont get upset over comments. Maybe I am just immune now. :)

Stay safe sir !
