Three Shot Groups for me Going Forward…

So I am now of the opinion that 3, 5 and 10 shot groups don’t tell me jack sh1t.

One thing is good though, I know damn well that that is 50 yards minute of squirrel all day.
Well, for your two 50Y groups what's the measurement on the 5 shot group vs the 30 shot group? Looks somewhat the same to me? A 5 shot group like that tells me the gun is good. A 30 shot group like that tells me the gun AND the pellets are good😍 I get fliers usually and probably couldn't replicate that....not with any of my 4 Airguns!

The “flyer” was one of the things they talked about in the video.

I would say that it’s controversial because basically with what they are questioning about the flyer, is that “flyer” real and not just inherent to your set up: gun, ammo and so on. With enough shots like say 30 would the flyer be within your group?

Flyers are more common in pellet pushers. It’s just part of the animal. I understand that if I just shoot straight from the tin, there are some bad pellets in there.
I know this personally because I’ve stuck my rifles on stable rests and shot them indoors. Multiple groups and it happens. I’ve forced it with pellets with damage in groups. I’ve done it with a few rifles and can see that some barrels are more agreeable to damaged pellets than others. The Cricket I had would probably still shoot rocks well if I fed it them 😆

Normally messed up pellets go in a plinking pile, but they can also be used to gain some knowledge of what the barrels are capable of.

Says the guy who enjoys modifying “value”Airguns, probably get your rocks off when it out performs higher end ones.

So yeah, I firmly believe you enjoy taking a minivan to the racetrack 😜.

Though I have noticed that you have an aversion towards anything pb and Airguns in the same sentence almost.

Nothing really wrong with either one of those things just pointing out biases and everyone has them.

If the data they are discussing in the video holds true, then the 3,5 and even a 10 shot group!, that concept as a complete measurement of accuracy will be severely diminished.
I do have an aversion to mentioning pb here because we are not suppose to, and there is so many different actual things happening between them that it really is two different topics. I really don't miss the noise and the recoil either, but I do miss the smell, especially shooting .22 rf. Even the cleaning afterwards was nice and relaxing and the smell of bore cleaner was really good. I mentioned too much already. I love shooting airguns though, and I like working on the cheapies because they need it. I only want to get them to where I can't tell which gun shot an outstanding group on the target, because they don't surpass the good stuff in function but can equal in performance sometimes, and that's enough.

Your earnest response is not lost upon me. Thank you for cracking the door open just a bit. Happy New Year.

I have yet to watch the video myself, but I 100% agree with you. My TX especially will fling the first couple real tight. Then a "flier" or 2. I almost always shoot larger groups (10+) with my springers and often they will print one big ol group covering that flier or they'll print 2 or 3 micro groups inside the "one" group. It's definitely lost on plinking or pesting as Luis mentions...Sometimes a gun is diassapointing on paper but then I'll plink/pest at various distances and it smacks everything?! If I sorted/weighed I imagine it would only improve but that just doesn't interest me at this point. Cheers guys for the new year!🥳

I want to perform this test on the S510 using the JSB 18.13 and M-lights at 50y. Care to join? New thread?

Honestly my shooting skills are so come and go it really don't matter .

Shoot lights out one hole every shot to a slice of Swiss cheese holes are grouped tighter .🥴

To reduce fliers: avoid cheap pellets; buy pellets from suppliers that pack them in foam and tightly pack tins in the box;
do not try to perform tight groups if the pellet tin shows damage from being dropped or used as a hockey puck before it got to you. When I have to use a pipe wrench and large pliers to open the damaged tin then the pellets inside are only useful for shooting large cans at ten yards. Fliers galore guaranteed.

I was attending a class once years ago on the use of force. One of the responding officers grabbed a rifle, and ended the situation with a well placed shot. Someone questioned the time it took to access the rifle to make the shot. The instructor replied that it was a higher percentage of success with the rifle "how many times out of a hundred could you make that shot with a handgun?" He quipped. Got me to thinking. So, I went to the range, set up the shot, and grabbed a hundred rounds of ammo. A few minutes later I packed up my gear, and headed home. The next time I saw him I simply said "100". You may wonder what this has to do with the post, and my point is that there is something to be learned by shooting more.

When I was shooting , first it was 5, then I moved to full magazines, there were times when I wanted to see if I could shoot a single tin of 33.95 in the same quarter sized hole at 60 yards (which is bigger than MOA, almost 1.5) with my Taipan Long .25.

The more rounds I can put MOA or less, the better my shooting is. Consistency and muscle memory. However, I would love to see that consistency transfer to other shooting positions aside from the bench.

Lots of good information here. I like 10 shot groups for testing. If you shoot 5 groups of 10 shots, you will see how consistent your setup is. So, if you are pellet testing you can learn more with 10 shot groups as they are more statistically significant.

I still do three shot groups with a known setup before going out to hunt/pest. Or at the sight in range at Field Target.

I have found tunes that will not give a 5 shot group to save their life, let alone 10 shots. I could stack the first 3 every time and get a flier on shot 4 or 5. After playing with the tune or switching ammo that problem went away and my 5 shot groups looked/ then I moved to 10 shots.

If I can average moa or sub-mow groups of 10, I know I have a setup worthy of hunting or pesting.
