Heavy .22 vs .25 What are your thoughts?!

Idk what slugs you’re shooting with a bc of .05 but I wouldn’t shoot them either.

.065bc with pellets is great, for pellets. 220yards? You got like 60 moa built into rails and scope mounts to deal with the 90,000” of drop?

What exactly are these pellets doing at 220y “in wind you’ve never shot in?” Punching paper. Still impressive but this whole discussion was about hunting performance no?

You wanna produce the footage of you ethically hunting something at 220y with pellets, in the wind, then I’m all for it and I’ll eat my slice of humble pie.

Otherwise I stand by my assertion that anything you can do with pellets in .22 or .30 I can do better with slugs in .25… in relation to hunting/pesting small to medium sized game.
Not 220-230 yds that is benrest score at 100 yds with pellets i guess i should have been more clear. And just what is the bc of your 31 gr slugs i highly doubt its over .1 if even that high and at 125 yds with such a slug you have to hold for wind. I shot 150 yds the other day with 22 25 gr pellet and hit first shot never shooting it that far before. Im really not trying to knock you down just saying why go light if why if you’re gonna go go for it.

I don’t believe that’s a reference to 220 yards. But, I’m just an observer on the sidelines of this conversation.
Well if it’s a benchrest score Im even less interested. That’s a totally different discipline and in my opinion the only carry over is accuracy.

No disrespect for paper punchers. If it was easy everyone would do it. But I hunt and I thought this discussion was about hunting.

In fact my initial comment was just to refute the argument that 30gr slugs are “pellet” territory but I guess that was triggering because the response was a D*** measuring contest and some nebulous comments about bc… because I don’t care what the bc number on the tin says I’ve never seen a slug (properly tune) bounce around in the wind like a pellet does.

Well since you’re so concerned about BC then you know that BC is directly correlated to the speed you shoot it at. So if we’re really getting into it “what’s your bc” is relative to speed and atmospheric conditions of the day. So the short answer is idk it depends. But considering I shoot my 32gr at 980fps I thing the bc is pretty good. Cuz with a 75y zero my drop is 1.3mil and at 200y it’s 7.9… verfiying by live shooting with scope cam to replay the POI for confirmation.

But why .25 vs .177 or .22 when the numbers are similar? That’s why I said ammo choice is so important too. The .25 cal Franco slugs get crazy expansion. I have footage of them hitting birds and being louder than fx hybrids… so that’s what .25 for me… for small game it has the best combination of power and energy transfer of the guns I have… for anything bigger than a jackrabbit or fox I want my .30.

Well bc is everything when shooting distance whether is hunting or on paper or steel. If you don’t know the bc you can’t know your aim point for all distances you are shooting unless you practice at every yard to your farthest distance. Its late and you know apparently what you need to know you don’t seem to believe what im trying to make you understand so have a nice nite

Well bad move on your part. Im not testing too many mote unless the bc is very high. In other words some alteros those 33’s and ill probably be shooting alteros and air marksman
Well, my S510 is currently shooting light slugs a whole lot better than the ghost with the slow twist barrel ever could. It absolutely feasts on 21 and 23 gr slugs and gets em in the low 800s. Bc? No idea🤔...as long as im connecting 95% of the time! As @Cantona256 mentioned many variables, incl the speed they are shot at....but the 💥 on birds? Now that's what im after! I will likely never shoot past 150Y so a slow push on a .22 40gr (@ say 850fps) for a better Bc is NOT ideal to me vs a 25-34gr going 950fps+ and shooting flatter. The slugs outta the S510 at 30-50Y full-pass through on birds....I can hear them zinging through the air after the (loud) hit....my ghost will shoot em faster and make them expand more. My S510 is loud but a good hit is louder than the gun itself. Once I found ammo a gun likes I dope it out to my max pesting ranges and write it down. I’d like to get some scope tape someday🤔 The Condor in .25 is so viable to me for more power. Lightest ammo it shoots well from factory is the 34gr pellets. Slugs? You start @ 40Gr and work your way up. If shooting heavy slugs a 70-90fpe monster is very possible with the AF platform and that's not pushing it too hard. I always love an underdog. My .22 👻 hits like a .25, now I want a .25 that hits like a .30🥳
This isn't a pesting conversation per se as power, and terminal performance is nothing without accuracy & consistency. Most of the slugs I've "stockpiled" were sampler packs or sales, I have zero doubles no matter how cheap they were.

I mean I made it clear I use a ballistics app and I have verified it. As far as BC goes I don’t use G1. I have found G7 gives me better results. So I use a g7 BC of .056.

I also live at 5,000ft and do most of my hunting between 3k-5k of elevation in a very dry environment. So I’ll fully admit that the environmental conditions helps me out a little with it.

But that was my whole point. BC is variable. I believe the G1 BC for Franco slugs is around .09… but I use the G7 .056 which if you convert back to G1 is a actually a BC of .109…. Why is mine higher? Well the listed environmental conditions and BC in the G1 model is directly correlated to speed so I’m probably getting a little boost by shooting them at 980fps.

Mostly importantly it works. I’ve tested it out to 200y and the slugs hit where they are expected to hit every time…as long as I don’t mess it up haha. At the end of the day I shoot slugs because I find it much easier to shoot this way. My barra feels a lot like a rimfire with the light flat shooting slug. The other reason I shoot slugs is they hit really dang hard when they get there. Do they hit harder than pellets?!? No clue. But my Instagram/youtube is literally just scope cam footage of squirrels, jackrabbits and doves getting whacked and the slugs sure do sound real nice. Haha

And you’re right it was late and I was grumpy so sorry for being difficult. Haha I probably should have just gone to bed like a good boy.

I agree with you guys that slugs are the way to go if you want to shoot long distance and your rifle will shoot them accurately. But I prefer pellets when I am limiting my shots to 75 yards or less and want a projectile that will loose velocity quickly after that for safety reasons. I tested slugs for a manufacturer, 30 caliber, when they were new to the Airgun world. This was long before slug barrels. Accuracy wasn’t satisfactory even playing with diameters. Haven’t shot any slugs since then since none of my guns have slug barrels but the new barrels from what I have read shoot them satisfactorily. But I don’t see where slugs are any better than a 22lr in performance.

In the benchrest sphere the new ace slugs have a better bc than any of the 22lr cartridges and Airguns have long been proven to have a much better fps spread than rimfires. Its much harder to control a chemical reaction than it is a valve. So that’s context for that argument.

Also when you look at power levels a typical .22lr subsonic is a 45gr slug at 980fps for like 96fpe. My karma did that straight out of the box. Factor in that a typical .22lr is between 100-140fpe it’s not terribly hard to beat that with an air rifle. My EQ is at 120fpe right now.

Factor in the quietness, the expansion capabilities of a soft airgun slug and I personally won’t use a powder burner for small game at less than 100y. I can do the job just as well and have more fun with my air rifles than with a 10/22 or 17HMR… plus I can do them at night in my front yard without the cops getting called. But this is all preference.

With the new .22 air rifle slugs doing .23 B.C. they have certainly surpassed rimfires (Eley Tenex .148 +/-), but the .25 heavies are better than that too, the Altaros .25 King 66gr .25, Queen 60gr .245. If anybody in the airgun world is really about shooting the highest B.C. in matches that allow slugs, they still should be shooting a .25, and any gun that it took to do so. I would. I don't really care about how many options that I have as long as I have the best one.

...but this is getting way off topic.

I agree but with those heavy 25 cal slugs your getting more recoil also and lock time is slower than a 22 lr. I was very surprised by the 40 gr air marksman at how well they shot even though they didn’t reach advertised velocity for me thats why i think their better right now than 25. I tried heavy 25 cal and to me this worked better.

You mean the Ghost can't quite send em fast enough? 🧐

Actually i was thing the tiapan i don’t have a 25 👻slug barrel you gotta remember 60 grain is almost twice 34 not just 3-4 grains more
Oh....to quote you:
"I was very surprised by the 40 gr air marksman at how well they shot even though they didn’t reach advertised velocity for me"
....I thought you meant the 40gr .22 Airmarksman slugs outta the ghost. I do wonder what the reg pressure ceiling is for power on the Ghost....should be able to get a 40gr up past 900fps... 🤔

Ya i had them to 920 anyway BUT i don’t tune to gun maxed out velocity which is why your reg is always higher than mine and you being frustrated by flyers! I turn it down to a point where i feel im not wasting air and possibly unsettling a slug leaving the barrel with a big blast of air
