Others TalonP Carbine, Better Late than Never!

Yeah, astigmatism is a little b!tch because it moves over time! I had out several old pair of glasses going back 30 years, and a dot sight, checking out how the correction had to change over time. Frustrating, especially since I'm there again. So I started to look into getting one.

I really need to look up the removal of the Auto-safety for my Escape SS. I like the gun a lot, but not being able to de-cock drives be bat-fecal-matter crazy. I want to get it out and really spend a full day with it. So many little things I want to do to it.

Side note, how do your tanks do when stored under pressure? I’m losing like 100-150 PSI per day with it sitting. None of my other PCP guns lose air anywhere near that fast. I filled to 3K two nights ago and haven’t shot at all. I’m around 2,600 now.
Talon Tunes has a Post with pictures on how to remove the Auto safety I believe.

I spent an hour looking for it today But have not found it. A part I forgot is that it requires the Removal of the Pins in front of the Trigger, that is suppose to remove the safety block housing and then the part will fall out. They do say that when you remove the Roll pins that they need to go back in the same way that the came out because they are tapered. I will keep trying to find the Pictures, I thought I put them in Favorites, but can't find em! LOL

I got my order from Talon Tunes today. The aluminum breech piece looks really nice, there isn't going to be a moment of buyers remorse with that. I'm still waiting on the bottle wrench.

I have been trying to pin down what I want to shoot out of this and I have run the logic in a circle and I am currently back to where I started, 34gr JSB MKII. I want this to have penetration, more than just an energy dump. I have a high level of confidence in the JSB too, and that means a lot.

I need to get that aluminum breech. The 34s have been the only one I've ever used. Keep us posted.

I worked on the TalonP today. Oh boy! was this thing dirty. An obviously much loved unit. I will henceforth only refer to it's moderator by it's true purpose, Lead Dust Collector. I always laughed at the LDC name, until today. Before I cleaned though, the very first thing I did, was to knock out the pin on the safety toggle. Good riddance!

Anyway, cleaning aside, you'll notice in the pictures that the bolt stops were so mushroomed that the hammer hammer and the hammer weight could not come out of the breech. The previous owner had wondered why the breech had a deep groove worn into it, but never bothered to fix it. I did. It was scratching my new aluminum breech and I didn't like that I couldn't remove the guts without removing the barrel.

I did not not put the hammer weight back in the gun. What I did was remove the original spring and put in a Talon Tunes heavy hammer spring. I am now running the gun at an indicated 5.5, whereas before with the hammer weight I was running at 9. At the old 9 with weight, I was averaging 820fps for 10 shots, es 25, using JSB 34gr MKII. At the new 5.5 no weight, heavy spring, I'm getting an 845fps average but the es is 50 for 10, but only a 36 es for 8 shots, so I am going to do that, until a try an o-ring behind the tophat. I was using 2900psi as a fill pressure.

Speaking of pressure. My original guage was off by quite a bit, 350psi, so I bought another guage from Talon Tunes. Now, I was going to just buy another AirForce guage, but I read Tony's write up where he said the AirForce guages he tested were often 300-400psi off, but his are checked and accurate, yeah right. My new Talon Tunes guage is 400psi off. So that was a waste of time and money. His aluminum breech is not. It's very nice, and what AirForce should be doing themselves. And what's up with the plastic power wheel, and the ridiculous little screw they use for the indicator? Seriously?

I used a quarter to adjust my tophat, BB's old trick, and it worked well. The only problem I still need to fix is the hole for the bolt isn't deep enough and the bolt fits really tight, so I am going to grind off some later on. I just need to shoot some groups to check accuracy now.

The plastic power wheel with that pin sized screw is terrible, some farmers could easily over come that little screw and adjust under tension and end up with problems.

It amazes me as well with the cost of any of these PCP guns that companies are not using a well known gauge brand like wika....

I know, right, why are they skimping, these guns were never cheap, but have some really cheap components that have never been upgraded. I don't get it. The people that make excuses for this stuff baffle me the most. And then there are some folks who complain about FX always coming out with something new, NOT me! I wish everybody would improve things that need to be, instead of leaving it for the aftermarket.

Could that Dirt you refer to have been a Dry Lubricant? I read that Airforce recommends no Oil for lubrication?
No, it was really thick hardened lead dust. I have seen it before, this was just an extreme example. The funny thing was the guy who sold me it said he didn't have any time to shoot it much, well he did at some point that's for sure. And you're right about dry lube, and he had oiled his spring, a big no no. I was glad in the end to have cleaned out everything and burnish in some graphite everywhere.

Two updates, my new air guage leaked down last night, and after all the disassembly and cleaning and parts changing and power increasing, the gun still shot dead nuts, no poi shift! What would it take to upset this apple cart?

I tightened the guage some more. I'm surprised it hasn't broken or stripped out yet. There was no derlin washer under the original guage, but it looks like they used some type of liquid threadlocker. I did put a derlin washer under the guage and did not use any tape or thread dope. The threads already seemed really tight to begin with so I didn't want to add anything else to the mix. I am going to keep giving it a quarter turn every night until it holds air or something breaks.
