Others TalonP Carbine, Better Late than Never!

I was originally was going to use the size on the right, but, then I thought, no I'm going big.

Going big created quite a few problems with the added height, but solved some too. I shouldn't have done the cut outs right above where I needed them, but should have figured for where they'd end up. The grip was a p.i.t.a. until I figured that out. On the other hand, the thick stock allowed me to put a screw underneath the picatinny mount to secure one side, handy! I absolutely love the look of the breech now and I think the grip looks more at home on this width of stock too.

That looks really cool, I almost don't want to paint it. Nahh

One more part to go, then paint!
I’m very surprised that as many aluminum stock mods that you do, that you’re not using Cerakote, LOL. I’m neither a fanboy or critic of Cerakote, it just seems like it’s the darling of the gun community. I can do a lot of things, but I’ve never been able to get a good paint finish of any type and I can’t be bothered with diy annodization. That is a really nice looking job with that aluminum channel -well done.

I was going to try Duracoat once and looked into other stuff but decided that I just don't need to bother with how I treat my stuff, which for the most part, is pretty well. Mostly because these days I don't treat myself that badly either. The paint jobs are delicate and get screwed up easily, which I think looks good in its own way too. A win, win, scenario. As long as all the parts function, the look can waiver with my demeanor, which usually is battle-worn also.

I am planning on ordering some parts from Talon Tunes because his website seems to be the best place to find enhanced performance parts for AirForce airguns that are not on ebay or Aliexpress. I'm thinking hard on this [ HP One Piece Top Hat And Stem - TalonAirguns ] or the one made for the .30 Condor

What I am going to be trying to achieve with this TalonP is to keep it at its original length, and parts count (actually I might be able to lessen the parts count) and get the max power that I can, out of 3000psi, for at least three shots, with no more than a 25fps es and accuracy for those shots to be 1.5" @53y. Right now it is doing 51fpe for 10 shots, but I'd like to see if I could break 60fpe for 3 accurate shots. Anything more will be gravy, but I think that this should be doable. Just out of curiousity and the fact that I almost never shoot more than 3 times at anything anyways. This little power house has shown me fast that my original expectations for it were a little too easy. The game is on.
I have bought many upgrade parts from Tony at Talon Tunes for an Airforce rifle i once owned. All of his parts are of high quality and have fit perfectly! Truly an enhancement to an already great platform.

Well, I would totally agree with you, because I really really like the aluminum breech, but, I do have to point out that Tony's guage was no more accurate than an AirForce guage. Besides that though, yeah, great stuff! I really didn't think the trigger pull spring would do much but I was wrong about that, it brought it right down. I'm kind of surprised, with the following these guns have, that he is the only game in town for parts. We're lucky to have him.

Finally painted the gun. It definately took down the contrast and blends in with old pavement and stonewalls, but the color itself is kinda meh. Whatever. I like how the picatinnny rails make the moderator look small now. It will darken up and look better with wear.

I'm really liking your Airforce build. Completely changes the look of the gun! Nice.
Thanks! I was trying to get away from the Star Wars look and more towards that of a tough service weapon. The fore grips are a huge improvement, in every way. It's more fun when they look cool. I'm trying to find a light setup to leave on the gun that is not too bulky, or just looks like it belongs on this build, but haven't seen any winners yet.

My TalonP project, as far as the build is concerned, is basically done at this point. I found a small light that works well and stays out of the way. I still might get around to an ammo holder and a different stock setup, but for now phase 1 is complete. I just need to start trying some slugs and see if they are worth doing out of this. Here is a pic of how I got it, and how I changed it. Definately my biggest make over yet.

Once again its a superb build! I love it man.

I was trying NSA 33.5, 36.2, 38.5gr slugs today and none shot consistently enough to continue with. I am going to have to make some kind of a slug seater. Using fingers to try to push in bullets to the same depth doesn't seem to be ideal for repeatability. The JSB 34gr MKII pellets don't seem to have a problem driving tacks, and they seat a lot easier. I don't know why I didn't think to try the Zan 28gr slugs that I shoot out of my P15, but I will tomorrow. Both guns are the same power and my P15 has a LW barrel on it too, and it loves the Zan's. I really have to be losing it to have just thought about this now, for the first time. Like the title of this thread, better late than never.

I tried the Zan's in my gun and they are actually doing 54fpe, which is better than they do in my P15(50fpe) but they don't shoot as well either. I am going to just stick with the 34gr MkII pellets, they are consistently shooting on top of one another at 53y, and they hold it together out past 100y where I shoot reaction targets. I can't ask for much more than that out of a 12" barrel, and I have a good supply anyway. The gun is too big to put behind the rear seat in my truck, so now I have to get some simple little bag, and leave it on my rear seat. I am not getting a case, this gun doesn't need any protection, I just want to keep prying eyes off of it.

Now that I have the aluminum breech, the hammer strike and twang response from the spring, makes this gun shoot more like a reversed recoil springer than a pcp. It is rather noisy, at least at the gun anyway. If anyone using an aluminum breech from Tony has used the slap mod hammer on their TalonP, I'd love to hear your thoughts on if it was worth it, and how it changed your gun's performance, thanks!

After living on the backseat of my truck for a while, no case, under some coats and rain gear, I took it out to shoot at my 120y targets yesterday. The JSB 34gr MkII pellets are still my favorites, they sail beautifully. The 12" barrel of this thing still blows my mind, that it can keep pace with my Mrod. It is hard to shoot, and actually not that pleasant, to me, but the accuracy and the power is there, along with the durability and ruggedness, that it all evens out. Definately the best truck gun going.

UNCLE! I have finally had enough of screwing up my neck, and I don't want to put on extra-high scope mounts. This little gun shoots lights out from a tripod, no problem. Shooting without one is a whole lot harder for me. It's too bad, because it really looked cool. Now it's going to be as comfortable to shoot as it used to look good. I missed another woodchuck, I did; the gun didn't, it's dead on. I had time to do everything too, ranged, Strelok, rested (but uncomfortable), and I waited a couple of minutes for him to turn and put his head up. It was 68y, and I have shot four woodchucks previously in the same spot, with my Mrod, right through the ear, every one. Well I missed this one. Last time.

Improvements on the way. I just ordered a bottle drop adapter from Talon Tunes, and a bottle I found on Amazon. I got the smallest cf bottle I could find, and that along with the 3" added by the adapter should be a 13.5" trigger pull, the same length that I have now with the stock extended 3". The bottle itself is 220cc compared to the original 213cc aluminum bottle and it's 4mm wider. While I would have rather used my old bottle, Talon Tunes doesn't seem to offer an adapter that uses it, only one for an M18x1.5, figures. If I decided that I want to regulate the gun down the road (though unlikely) I can fill this bottle to 300bar anyway. The .3L aluminum bottle would have been too long. I hope that this makes the difference that I am expecting. Only one way to find out.

A follow-up on shootability.

Different stages of cheekrest height:

I could not imagine shooting this gun with low dovetail rings and the stock bottle setup. I did get it already with a picatinny rail to raise it some, but that wasn't enough. The whole design is already tall, and I didn't want to go with taller rings. I had thought that I could get use to it, and I just couldn't. I got the drop down adapter from Talon Tunes and a .22L carbon fiber bottle. The length of trigger pull is 13" with the adapter and bottle. The .22L bottle is 54mm in diameter so I couldn't use the stock from the 50mm aluminum standard bottle. I just put a neoprene beer bottle cover on it to give it some protection, and cover that with a cheekrest bag that I put ammo in and other small stuff I might need. This bag and everything ends up being just below the height of the barrel tube. It makes a significant difference in the ease to look through the scope. No, it doesn't look as cool, but neither does walking around with a crick in one's neck. I don't like that there is no way to clock the adapter for the fill port and guage. No easy way, anyway. I got it close enough that I am not going to pursue any other options for the time being.
