Sonoran Random Thoughts On the BRK Sonoran

Well I’m well versed in one aspect of the Sonoran. I spent five hours shooting and adjusting in 113f heat index. I shot almost 70 AEA .30 52.2gr slugs from 70 bat to 175 bar in 3 shot groups. It was fun, but brutal in Florida humidity. I started by shooting a slug into stuffed box so that I could retrieve the slug and examine it. I started at 25yds and moved to 51yds. About 50 shots I was surprised that I couldn’t hit over 800fps. Then I realized that I never changed the power selector to max lol. So I know I know how the lower power setting is affected by the regulator. I did shoot some small groups at a relatively low power. I’ll probably post the info anyway and try it again at max power.

This is great cause you’re getting to know your gun intimately so if you want to make any changes down the road its no biggie. Plus you will find a tune that is good on air and accurate!

I’ve redone it at max power. It’s been a lot of fun. Also shot several nice 3 shot groups at 51 yards. These are 52.2 gr slugs. .166” . I’m really liking the BRK .30 Sonoran air rifle with Sub-MOA barrel.

He mentions the AEA .30 52.2gr slugs. As there was a thread that JTS also just launched some .30 slugs they might be worth a try too.

Bill - do you know what the fps on the slugs was when you shot the .166" group?

Bill - do you know what the fps on the slugs was when you shot the .166" group?

861fps, shots 31-33 on attached Chrono. It just so happens it was where the velocity maxed out.

I have several questions for you more experienced slug shooters:
1. My best group was shot at 170 bar reg at 861fps. This is the same point that my velocity maxed out. There was no difference in velocity at 175 bar. What is the likelihood that the accuracy would improve if greater velocity was available or do you think 860 fps is a high enough velocity to fully stabilize the slug?
2. I have tried both JSB and these AEA slugs and they are two of the lightest slugs available (52gr +/-). Most other slugs are 60gr plus, does the Sonoran have enough power to even try these heavier slugs?

That was the AEA 52.2 slug.

Your results are promising, but it's going to be tough with 1:26 twist barrel. At 50y it could work but fall apart by 100y.

I shot some groups at 75yds today, but I got tired of fighting the wind. To be honest, I don’t really have a need for slugs. I haven’t hunted since 2008, up until then I hunted every season I could. The last time I shot any pests was 10 plus years ago. It’s more just a challenge. But, it definitely shoots slugs better than my other rifles. That’s a bunch of slugs I shot on a 100yd BR target last night

I think it's a great experiment - I've tried some slugs with little success. I mean not awful but 3-4" at the 100 yard mark. That's still better than a lot of guns can do.

I'm sticking with pellets as that is what it is designed for. But the tinkerer in me tried the FX Hybrid, Daystate Howlers (best of the bunch), some NSA 43.8 and 47.2 (IIRC those are the weights).

I've got 100yard sluggers in the Huben K1 and the Mora, both .25, so I don't feel so obliged to try slugs to death in every platform.

I tried to shoot some slugs at 75yds and 100yd earlier today and gave up because of the wind. I went back out just before dark when the winds died down and shot some AEA Center Punch .30 50.5gr pellets at 75yds. I started with the regulator at 145 bar and shooting 3 shot groups worked my way up until the velocity topped out. Then I shot a 16 pellet group on an EBR 75yd practice target.

I’m somewhat obsessed right now lol. I will try the Howlers at some point.
