Modifications Off the Shelf discussion

I’m throwing this out there for discussion.

Can you buy an off the shelf gun and compete at RMAC or EBR with a reasonably good expectation of doing well? No accessory barrels, etc. just a normal set of adjustments to get the gun shooting at the proper speed for the pellets of your choice.

I’ll go first. In 2022 I was shooting .22 caliber RD Monsters most of the season with an older Red Wolf HP. We all know the troubles JSB has/had with pellet consistency and flyers, especially from that pellet.
So about a month prior to EBR, I had had it with the occasional flyer ruining a good scorecard. So I called AoA and ordered a .25 Red Wolf. It shot the .25 King Heavy on mid power at 940 fps. I installed my favorite BR scope, a 15-60x Vortex Golden Eagle.
At EBR 2022, I squeaked into the finals with so-so 75 yard scores, and then finished 3rd in 100Y Pro Division ($2,000 prize).
Bone Stock. Nothing done or added to the gun. I still have that gun, now in a red PRS Chassis (thanks AoA!!!) and will be shooting it in Speed at RMAC next week.
Why not 100Y BR you ask? It’s a 225+ gun, not a 230+ gun, which is what is necessary these days to make the finals and the podium.

Well mike we could get some big wind fans from the movies that would make 220 scores good again! Lol. You shoot more big matches than me where do you think this will end up , maybe with all custom guns? Or will it end up with everyone making their own ammo , will it be a barrel or ammo race?

Off the shelf 50Y there are tons of airguns (my S510) that could win a competition. 100Y is a whole different game for sure. I don't see anything available really as a option to win when most everyone else is running modified. In my opinion that should be the rules; a modified and stock class, like racing, or by caliber at least. We are truly in a golden age of airgun/ammo/gear, bigger calibers (.30 is the new .22) power & long range chasing but when your up against a custom MCAR, a Highly modded Ghost/Sonoran with a Sub Moa barrel, a tricked out Impact M3 with 10k under the hood.....I'd be afraid
@Centercut don't you have the new Blackwolf.... Thoughts on it? After all the Hype (and $$) I'd fully expect it to do decently outta the box!?

Yes, I have the .30 Black Wolf Chassis with 23 inch barrel. It is as accurate as the .25 Red Wolf in the first post and the .30 Bobcat I won Sportsman Class with at EBR 2019. I have not had it long enough (one month) to be competitive at RMAC 2025. After RMAC I will have plenty of time to shoot it in preparation for EBR. It is Bone Stock and I’d like to show at EBR that I can make the finals and maybe even podium with it.

Martin Rutherford Rutterford To my understanding he was the man building the rifles before Airforce took over. At some point he was still working with RAW then started the airguns-USA site. I don’t know if he still does any work on them.

Martin originally owned RAW after he came here from the UK. He designed and developed RAW rifles
I think from the Theoben. He sold the design and manufacturing rights to Air Force and did final assembly for them for a while. Later he formed Airguns-USA and does custom work. He built me a RAW HM1000x in .177 last year for long range slug shooting. Air Force does not offer that rifle in .177. Martin now is completely independent from AF.

I think they are still made to the same quality as the old ones used to be.

The short answer is NO........... Now you might get lucky and get the perfect gun but to compete and win, I believe modifications are very necessary. Every little bit has to be drawn out to reach the highest levels of performance.
