Day One of Extreme Benchrest 2026 started with a bang – as usual – with the amazingly-popular Extreme Field Target competition.
EFT is always the course of fire that is fully-booked first. And – as the entire event was completely sold out within 15 minutes, that’s really saying something. The chance to compete with the best in the Sonoran desert is clearly a huge attraction!
The Extreme Field Target match format is to have 5 lanes, with a total of 20 targets. Two shots on each target makes a total of 40 shots to count.
The match is limited to the first 75 registered shooters.
Targets are placed from 15 to 100 Yards range, with all target distances marked on a board at the firing station (see below).
Each shooter then has 5 minutes to shoot all 4 targets twice for his or her total of 8 shots per station.
There’s two classes.
1. Extreme Class is for 25 to .35 caliber air rifles with a minimum Muzzle Energy of 28 Ft/Lbs required to knock down the targets. Maximum power is 150 Ft/Lbs
2. Sniper Class is limited to .22 caliber. Although again, a minimum Muzzle Energy of 28 Ft/Lbs is required. Maximum power is 65 Ft/Lbs.
Below. Daystate Wolf Pack shooter John Bagakis is shooting his Red Wolf.
There’s a minimum of rules for Extreme Field target. However tripods, rear rests and chairs with backs are not allowed.
The competition is for pellets only (no slugs) and the maximum allowable scope magnification is 32x.
Any shooting position is allowed within the marked shooting area.
Each station is manned by a Range Officer who undertakes the scoring.
Below Rick Rehm was making his first appearance at Extreme Benchrest. He enjoyed the EFT challenge, shooting an RTI Mora.
Below, Barb Pellegrino was in charge of squadding. She allocated each competitor to their starting time and station. Thanks Barb!
Below. Every firing station was covered, in deference to the bright Arizona sun.
Barb’s husband Tony Pellegrino was competing with his BRK. I asked him for his comments on the strong, gusting wind. Sadly Tony’s reply was – in my opinion – not entirely suitable for general publication!!!
Tom Adams and Cindy Alexander are both highly-accomplished speed silhouette and benchrest shooters. They ventured down the the EFT course and were having a fun time at EBR 2026!
Today’s other competition was the Steel Scramble. We’ll look at that next. Stay tuned…
