Self-Loading A Continuing Field Review: Working With Western Rattler .45 LS

I’d intended to do some shooting on Sunday, but someone was hosting an event. I could hear them so they would’ve heard me shooting if I got started and I didn’t want to frighten any guests if they’re city folks bit accustomed to hearing gunshots as a part of healthy everyday living.

I did mount a Sightron STAC atop my Rattler .45 Ling Strike. I don’t think I’ll leave it on there. I have to look through some more scopes. I was thinking of putting a 4-16x on there. I definitely want a FFP scope on it. I have several scopes mounted and have to determine if I want to swap them around. For not eh Sightron will do. I have to wrap the parallax knob with white tape so I can setup my scope tape marking since Sightron STACs lack numbers on the parallax knobs. It’s in some low Butris Signature rings. I placed a piece a blue painters tape on the bottom of the objective need to prevent the finish from being scratched by vibrations from the shots. You can also see the section of arcs plate that I attached to the pic rail in order to mount the rifle to a tripod.

I also noticed that the shroud is in 2 sections. I tried unscrewing it and noticed a small scratch in the shroud above the band that helps to brace the bottle reservoir. I don’t know if it scratched it or if it came that way. I also placed a piece of blue tape on the shroud here was well. They are too close together for my taste. It’s to the point where the shroud can become damaged. I may wrap this section of the shroud with camp tape later.

Because it’s gotten cooler, I wanted to cover the cheek piece which is a non-adjustable piece of hard plastic screwed down onto the reciever. I covered it with a thin, but soft neoprene strip with and adhesive backing. I cut it as I situated it on the cheek piece. It is noticeably more confortable.

It appears that my ref has been set to 195 bar from AOA. The rifle says “Max Pressure 300 bar.”

I’m not too keen on filling Rattlers above 250 bar due to my experience with my .357 Rattler experiencing reg creep with higher fill pressure. I need to contact someone at AOA about this to be sure. My rifle didn’t come with an instruction manual or leaflet. After topping the rifle off I was happy to see that the reg set point didn’t move.

I had intended to shoot both untethered and tethered.
Usually the instruction manual is tucked discretely inside one of the Savior case pockets, but if not all instructions are on www.westernairguns.com

AoA has installment plans as well and Credova. Affirm is Amazon based
That's not quite true about Affirm. Amazon is just a merchant that accepts it. I use it quite often with their zero interest short installment plans. They are a publicly traded firm under AFRM with no connection to Amazon. I don't use it for credit, but their zero interest works the same way. Credova is a similar competitor. I've used the virtual Visa card to buy airgun stuff from airgun dealers that don't accept Affirm. I"m not sure why it wouldn't work at UA, the merchant just sees it as a credit card.

@AtlasAirguns Thank you. I hadn’t realized there was a pockets on this case until your post. I found the manual, test target, chronograph documentation, a AOA sticker, and a receipt. On the inside of the case was a pocket divided into 3 compartments with Velcro holding each compartment shut. I totally missed this and thought it was a part of the inner liner. This long case for the Long Strike is a lot longer than the Savior case for the .357. They are 2 totally different cases. Both are well built with quality materials. Savior is a quality brand.

Awesome. They keep them in there to not scare the finish and not damage the documents, but it's a common where is the item question. Cheers

Update time. Although I mounted a Sightron STAC FFP scope on my Long Strike, I didn’t shoot it because I knew it likely wouldn’t remain on the gun. Since big bore lead is pricey and I’m ready to start sampling slugs, I didn’t want to waste any projectiles zeroing a scope and collecting DOPE on something I probably won’t use much. It would be a waste of slugs to test on two scopes. So I made a decision to pair this rifle with glass fitting of a rifle in Western Rattler along Stirke’s class. This is something I’d give considerable thought to before testing.

I got my hands on the scope this week and I will take some time today to mount it. I bought some rings for it so I have what I need to get going. Hopefully I purchased ring that are high enough to clear the pic rail, but not too high. I don’t want to say which scope it is, but I’ll say this for now: this scope was Japanese glass, a 34mm tube, my preferred magnification range, and illuminated tree reticle, it focuses down to 10 yards, and is compact. I haven’t taken time to view it outdoors, but indoors the clarity looks good. The jury is still out on the quality of illumination, but that a detail that doesn’t relate to the rifle. I’ll leave more of the details of the scope for its own review. I have a feeling it will pair well with the Rattler Long Strike for my intended application. I look forward to sharing some slug testing results this week. Stay tuned. There is more to come.
