Benchrest Online Benchrest Competition Rules

This thread will be for discussing the rules of our online benchrest competition. Right now there are no rules. My experience from organizing and running regional RC car racing tells me that rules are a double edged sword. If we start with too many rules we will deter inexperienced competitors from trying it out. The flip side is that without rules, a lot of more experienced shooters will be deterred. I suggest we keep it simple, make sure their system concept is fun and works and then hopefully let it grow from there. I’m hoping we can attract some new shooters to the awesome HAM community. Try not to follow my bad example of polluting the thread with other topics.

After seeing duckhunters card i think the way he posted scoring by eye and writing it in the little box was good i only disagreed with 1 x. I think we need to add in and outside and general weather cond and if flags were used.
After closer inspection that x is good

I think we would have more participants with printable targets?
does the ELEY system only work with their targets?
is there any other scoring apps that can function for this purpose?
I did a quick search and it looks like there could be?
if they do what we would want?
I believe you have to have that type of target for the camera to work. I am open to score either way. But have noticed that the Eyle system for scoring is not always correct.

Are we going to open this up to .25 and .30 caliber? I think at Fifty yards we keep it to .22 caliber

The ELEY system is caliber agnostic it actually works the opposite of the traditional plugging system and portrays actual accuracy in my opinion. It calculates the dead center of the shot and then and then interpolates a .22 circle centered on the center and scores every caliber as a .22. In a nutshell: instead of enlarging smaller calibers to match the largest caliber allowed, it shrinks larger calibers to match the .22.

My suggestion is allow ,177 ( if it works) to .35. For right now limit it to 50yds. If it’s successful we can always add other matches at different ranges. I know I will be interested in 100yds as well. I like shooting and so I’m game for most ranges. I know Elaine and I will both participate and at least five others have already purchased targets. I will make some trinkets to recognize winners. I think we should shoot a match or two, see how it all comes together. Then hammer out a schedule and set the rules etc.. The hard part will be getting it started. I’ll be more than glad to make some instruction videos if anyone is having difficulty. These are only suggestions, feel free to disagree, build upon them or add your own ideas. Please keep it constructive.
I also feel that slugs or pellets are ok?

Are going to plug to 30 cal?
The ELEY software already does that. It mathematically reduces the size of the hole and scores the target as if it were a .22. But, I’m good with whatever everyone wants to limit it to. All of this has also been tested by a Florida airgun benchrest group and they came up with similar results. They’re trying to start something, but they require two shooters to shoot and witness each others targets. That totally eliminates a lone wolf like me.

I’ve been using the ELEY app since January 2025. I saw they were trying to use it a few months ago in a facebook group and I posted the target graphic and they deleted and called me at home via FB, because they thought I had pirated the graphic. I explained that ELEY provides it as a downloadable target. They told me that they had been testing it with multiple calibers and were happy with the results. Here’s a target I shot with the Sonoran a few months ago. You can see how it measures it. I would like to try .177. I have three .177, but none are really 50yd guns. IMG_3579.webp

I’m surprised that nobody suggested FaceTime, zoom or similar for the scenario you are talking about.
