Does anyone else feel like they're going backwards as they get older?
I'm getting sick and tired of all the "smart" technology out there—smartphones, AI, smart this, smart that. Lately, I've found myself actively reverting to older, simpler ways of doing things. I'm literally back to writing checks, and I've never been happier.
The other day, I was driving my work van—a basic model with old-school yellow lights, not LEDs, and no infotainment system—and I realized how much I enjoy the simplicity. There's no constant buzzing, no notifications, and no distractions.
It's not just the digital noise; it's the feeling of being watched all the time. All the company work vehicles have cameras on the road and on the driver, and my job is to literally monitor that fleet to make sure everyone is safe. Thank goodness my personal van doesn't have one. But then you go into the workplace, and there are more cameras. Even at home, we have security cameras on every angle. It feels like there's no privacy left anywhere.
This feeling of a constant spotlight reminds me a lot of why I love my airguns. As many of you have read, my TalonP is my only airgun now because of its retro vibes. That gun is the perfect example of pure, mechanical satisfaction. No complicated electronics, no digital readouts, just the satisfying thwump of the hammer and the solid feel of a well-made machine. It’s a complete escape from the digital noise.
To take this a step further, I've started the process of deleting my banking info from a lot of places online. It's a pain, but the idea of having my financial data scattered across a hundred different websites feels like a huge risk and a burden I don't want anymore. I'd rather just use a card when I need to, and know my information isn't floating around out there.
Honestly, I think a lot of this comes from my childhood. I barely played video games growing up; I was out in the alleys with my slingshot, shooting pigeons and making blowguns. I didn't have time for a screen. So this pull toward tangible, mechanical things isn't me losing my mind—it's me staying true to the kind of satisfaction I've always known.
I know it sounds a bit strange, but I feel like all this modern convenience has created a new kind of stress. It feels like a constant demand on my attention. Stepping away from it all feels less like going backwards and more like taking a deep breath.
Is this normal? Does anyone else catch themselves doing this? I'm curious to hear if I'm the only one feeling this way.
P.S. I may seem like a hypocrite for saying all this. I used an AI like ChatGPT to help me write this post. My own writing isn't perfect, and this tool helps me put my thoughts on "paper." It's something I'm also required to use daily for my job, and honestly, that's a huge part of why I crave simplicity in my personal life. It's a constant reminder of the digital noise I'm trying to escape.

Maybe I’ve watched too many sci-fi movies, always have. I think it’s made me AI phobic.

Technologies are great and it’s made a lot of things possible. But part of me feels like things can be taken too far.

It’s almost like when you get old you have to stay active. You have to keep busy of mind, body and soul. If not, you will wither away. It makes me concerned about what will happen to humanity eventually.

As far as keeping a small digital footprint, I share too much but I do love Airguns and with so few of us who love the hobby we really need a way to communicate.

I don’t mind the forums it’s kinda hard to send smoke signals but I feel like this is good enough for me I don’t need more.

LOL
not me I still wear a wind up watch dont carry a cell phone hate remote controls don't know how all that crap on the tv works went to get a new truck but walked away do the all that tech just put a motor in the old truck I hate anything that uses batteries but I feel good know I. am now all in on PCP's : )

Fortunately, you are not alone. Personal info/privacy is something most (especially under 50) do not deem important. It is true that we cannot escape the digital dispensing of our data. People, especially young ones, do not understand the ramifications of such.
Those of us that grew-up without all this intrusion of constant connection have trouble understanding the need to be connected constantly and vice versa!
Those that are connected all the time deem privacy as already lost and accept such whether it was ever even understood in the first place. Think societal pressure.
Unfortunately, it is only going to get worse with AI and big brother always sniffing/watching.
All cell phones, Microsoft and Apple Computers are a security risk and track/collect our data.
If an "app" is free, like on a phone...it ain't really free!
The only thing one can do is minimize and think before releasing data.

Do what you are able to minimize the risk from location to financial data or at least understand what is at stake.
Remember, We are the data to be mined then sold to the highest bidder. It is going to get worse!

LOL

I love it I wish I was at that point. My boss said I should get an Apple Watch. I refused because it’s another way of being tracked and him being able to call me👎

Mike, I don’t know why but reading this thread was making me think about when I was a kid with some of my toys. Simpler times when things just made more sense I guess.

I remembered that I used to have some that used an air pump.

I guess that explains why I have PCP Airguns now lol.

Forgot my phone at home today, it was GREEAAAT....besides missing Ham of course! 😂
I own a bunch of 7th gen civics, and was excited my latest one has power windows and cruise, lol. New cars and all the tech makes me gag, I work on rental equipment and the electronics just to operate these things is getting way out of hand, GPS and cameras on everything....
Airguns make a ton of sense for me as its very similar to my work....o-rings, valves, springs, regulators, cylinders, high (oil) pressure etc. But....airguns are way more fun!

I miss climbing in and sitting on the radiator, manifold or valve cover and working on a carburetor.

Hell, I like mechanical fuel injected diesel just because carburetors suck, pun intended.

You are not alone! Ì do security systems for a living, but can't stand doing all the tech stuff day in and day out. Things used to be simple! We took care of the animals, played, fished, and hunted. Nothing fancy or complicated! Life was so much less stressful. I am like you on keeping it simple. That has always been a draw to the Airforce platform. Like you, I am trying to get back to the simpler days. Between taking care of my mom's farmette and work there just is not much down time to play. I am happy for you to be back home,it has been a long time! Take care my friend!

See if you can find Ray Bradbury movies on YouTube. There is on called “The Murderer”. It is totally appropriate to your post and can’t help but think to yourself ….Oh Yeah. Good luck in your search for peace👍😉
