Sick of 🐂 💩 on YouTube

think if you are digesting any content, including reading fictional or non-fictional literature, the core attribute that sets good content apart from bad content, the "was it any good?" question you get when you read a book or watch a film, is whether or not it was entertaining. If you are not watching YouTube for entertainment, you are doing the YouTube wrong!

On bias
If you guys want unbiased media stop watching movies, tv (especially news), YouTube, reading books, reading magazines, reading all social media and even forums. Stop even reading the owners manual, it is biased too, right? You will have to buy the rifles and test them and sell them, but I don't think you can report your experience to others because that will convey a bias to others. Don't forget, your subjective values will create bias that others do not have.

This is a fascinating discussion. I think I'll ask my English friend Roger to do a podcast episode on it and I'll put it on YouTube 😉🤣.

Very well put… IMHO “filtering” all of the bias is the “due diligence” of the consumer… When I decided to buy my first 1K+ PCP. I read a lot of opinions from actual users and reviewers and watch “some” YouTube videos. Then coalesced all the information and formalized “my” choice. So far its worked for me. I simply cannot literally afford the “chase”. The products I pay good coin for? Simply need to exceed or at worst, work as advertised…🙏

I think the difference is if you are looking for someone's opinion vs "science" based information. Sub12-Jake's, video on the barrel clamp...was straight up data; he told us/showed us the set up, did statistical numbers of shots...same with a lot of Gert's and Steve Scialli's when he is testing a rifle or pellets etc...
I am hoping someone like Jake does a "science" based video on the BRK Ghost Barrel Tensioning System so I can get an idea of just how much more precise that makes the Ghost...preferably with the HP barrel not the 28" barrel...since that is what I have in 177 & 22.....and then with the clamp and the tensioner installed.....
I find it odd that neither BRK nor AoA have done that in an effort to convince folks that it is worth it...

It is called the Freeborn method. You tell them what you're going to tell them, you tell them, and then tell them what you told them.

I just bought and sold everything that was garbage or didn’t meet my criteria that’s why I’m highly opinionated. I’ve had my hands on a lot. I don’t comment on guns I haven’t owned and if I do it’s just educated speculation from being familiar with the brand but maybe not the actual model (impact for example) I’ve owned enough to know they are accurate but don’t want 700 combinations of tunes when I just want to shoot pests.

Tripple G
Tilly
Sub12
Dana and Marley
And a few I am sure I am missing

There really are not many more that I watch for airgun videos. Most are just out pushing the newest and greatest thing and never have ANY bad to say about the rifles. I did really like watching Giles for quite a while as he would typically be straight down the line, but his video uploads have gotten really slow. And many of the stuff he is "reviewing" is from FX and sound a little biased.

What most people fail to understand or think of, is that when these people are "reviewing" a product they have to give the product a good review. Especially if they ever want to see another product and be given the chance to review anything again. Ted's Holdover used to be a GREAT channel when he first started out, as well as AirArms South Africa, but FX got their claws into them and all they do is shill for the company. I get it and have personally talked to many of the youtube guys and they are all honestly great people outside of the airgun review thing. But for most it is a job and a way of making money. So to make money you have to play ball and only talk about the positives of a product.

Thats one reason why I really like American Air Arms. When Tom let me play with the HPS30 for a while I asked him straight up what he would like to me talk about or to specifically look at. His response was to shoot it and be honest. That is why his products are good, in my mind, is that he takes criticism and uses that to improve the rifles for everyone.

Not trying to say anything bad or bad mouth ANY of the guys that are reviewing rifles. It is a way for them to make money, and everyone has to understand this.

Have to take them with a grain of salt for sure. I watch more for entertainment and reward the channels that produce regular content for their work with views no matter what. I don’t like the ones that produce 2 videos a year no matter how good they are. I realize no one is getting rich from the vids but it’s like anything else. Either “do it” or don’t. Also why I have unsubscribed from every single airgun podcast. If you are going to do one…do it.

This is an interesting subject, we don't really do reviews our channel (sub 12 airguners) is more what we like and don't like, what we are going to change/make/modify and showing what's inside but i do understand how it works, the trouble a youtuber has he/she needs guns/stuff to make content and most i guess start with there own bits but soon have to buy things to make videos on, if the channel becomes popular you start to get offered stuff to review for free and that really helps because you wont be making any money from YouTube yet so you can keep making new content without running out of money. If you give a negative review it's not just that company that wont send you stuff anymore it's lots because they see your not frightened of doing bad reviews that ends your ability to keep making new content so it is very tricky, if you want to see new stuff on youtube you have to treat it all like an advert imo you can still get some really good info but you need to make your own mind up and maybe take accuracy / shot count climes things like that with caution 😀

We get asked a lot to review things we turn 99% of them down most are are optics or accessory's of some sort, they will send a brief and bullet points of what to say, you get a list of stuff to pick from for free and if you give a positive review you will get more offers and so on, it is funny when we see someone reviewing a scope or something we have been asked to do but i sort of understand that's how it has to work for a lot of youtubers, we are lucky we fund our channel by doing other things so we can buy all our own guns to use in the videos. Our channel is more information than entertainment and very few reviews and because of the way we run the channel it's a lot easer for us to keep making content without taking free guns/accessory's.

There's lots of great youtube channels out there and it takes a lot of time and effort to make good content, many do it for the love of the hobby not for money, but it is a bonus if it doesn't cost to much to run 😁

@Sub 12 airgunners thank you for your excellent observations on YouTube "review" channels. Please keep up the good work with doing what you do in the way that you do it. Your informational approach is much appreciated by many of us :D

Hey Tristin I’ve listened to your podcast’s they’re really good

youre good at it and your video making skills are awesome. I love the music choices :)
Thank you. I love filming as an art. There is so much to learn so I am just plugging away at it.

Cheers

i have a hard time watching youtube its something i have to do from my computer as i dont want to even atempted it on my phone. so to set here at my desk for a long video just isnt happening. 10 to 15 min or i am out.
when i do watch it is generally to learn somthing and as to air guns that most offten means @Sub 12 airgunners : ) mostly as of recent to see how a gun i was interested in was made whats the guts.
i do watch some of Danas videos but i have to be carfule with him as he allwasy makes my wallet shrink

As I get older and learn more and become wiser I have learned that the world of You-Crap is full of just that- crap. These days if you want a descent answer about anything you either have to buy and try or know someone that has something you’re interested in wether that’s an airgun, compressor or whatever or post it on the forum and hope it don’t get shut down. Today i YouTubed FX DRS just for the heck of it. Guess what? Mostly all of the videos were from the usual faces we associate with FX. This is one example. It’s not just Airguns that you see this with this with, this also extends to other industries as well but since we’re all Airgun folks here we will just stick with Airguns. I don’t believe a word anyone says on YouTube anymore especially from folks who are big YouTubers in our industry. I’ve owned a lot of the guns reviewed and most of what is being said is crap. I don’t want to point fingers at any manufacturer or specific YouTuber. I understand its business but at the end of the day the consumer especially the new guy watches all this crap and believes all this horse sh!? Spends their hard earned money only to be dissatisfied, disappointed which leaves a bad impression on a new guy starting out. Just have common sense when researching. Ask the questions on here you’ll get straight answers. I’ve PMd people a lot if I see a question posted if I didn’t want to publicly say anything. Happy Sunday y’all and have a great week:) watch videos for entertainment purposes take everything said with a grain of salt.
Lot of truth there. I tend to look at presentation. I am an analytical type, so I tend to look for reviews that are presented in an organized manner. If they take a haphazard approach I probably have turned it off in the first couple of minutes if not sooner. Once I determine if the person is worth listening to I begin to digest their information.

I look at You Tube like the old days of hanging around the lgs listening to the old codgers talk about guns and life in general.
Some of it is nonsense.
Some of it is out and out false
Some of it is useful information.
The internet really is a wonderful thing. You get the opinions of people from all over the country and world on different subjects.
I usually won't watch videos that last more then 10 minutes unless it's a creator I really enjoy.
YT has helped teach me to repair items.
It's better then what magazines have become, no more then advertisement for industry. And boring at that.

Yeah for just pure entertainment I enjoy YouTube. I don’t mind learning how to properly cook a steak or something but I’m not relying on it for any purchases. It’s better than nothing but one must handle whatever you want to buy which is mostly impossible these days or know someone who has ahham @PasadenaMike youre welcome
