New Umarex Zelos And More Launched At 2024 SHOT Show

We’ve already seen the new AirJavelin FishR, launched by Umarex USA at the 2024 SHOT Show. Now let’s look at some more new products, including the Umarex Zelos PCP air rifle.

That’s Umarex USA Marketing Manager Scott Faldon showing us the new PCP in our heading photograph above. And here’s a close-up of the action.

Umarex Zelos

Scott explained to me that the Umarex Zelos is a “big brother” to the HAM Gold Award-winning Umarex Notos that has become so popular in a short time since it’s introduction last year.

The Zelos is a regulated, sidelever PCP that’s to be available in .22 and .25 calibers. There’s high-capacity magazines holding 20 rounds in .22 cal and 18 rounds in .25 caliber.

The 3,625 PSI HPA tube is fed into the action via an adjustable regulator. Scott told me that this regulator can be set for pressures between 1,000 and 2,000 PSI. The result is a maximum Muzzle Energy of 26 Ft/Lbs in .22 and 36 Ft/Lbs in .25 cal.

The Umarex Zelos looks to be an exciting new product and HAM plans to be reviewing it as soon as possible. Availability should be in the Summer.

Umarex continues to press ahead with new versions of its popular Gauntlet family. Now there’s sidelever versions of the Gauntlet in .22 and .25 calibers, to complement the .30 caliber model launched recently.

Above, Scott shows us the new model. The name is now officially “Umarex Gauntlet 2 SL25” (or SL22), where SL stands for Side Lever and the figures the caliber.

Pyramyd Air already is showing the SL22 and SL25 available for pre-order, with an expected delivery date of early March.

Then there’s the new Umarex Iconix. This low-priced PCP will sell for around $160 and be available in .22 caliber only.

The Iconix has a sidelever action, 8-shot rotary magazine and fills to 3,000 PSI. Muzzle Energy is given as 26.43 Ft/Lbs with 11.9 Grain pellets, so we can probably expect more with heavier ammo.

It’s a light weight, compact model – full specifications to follow…

OK, I guess I am going to be the first to say it, on the Zelos, "a swing and a miss." The little Notos is one thing, but at the size of this gun, [The result is a maximum Muzzle Energy of 26 Ft/Lbs in .22 and 36 Ft/Lbs in .25 cal.] this is unacceptable in the US market to me. Talk about under-powered. With all the options out there, why do this? We will see if I am wrong, but I don't see this selling out like the little light Notos. They need to up those numbers, fast. A .22 should be capable of at least 30fpe, and a .25 40 minimum. My personal numbers are 32/50 respectively. Good luck Umarex, sincerely, I do love how you have been adding sidelevers to your whole line up. Good job there!

Have to disagree at the price point if the Iconix delivers 26 FPE, thats already more than any springers in the same price range. I went from a .22, 30 FPE PCP to a 17 FPE .22 PCP. Made no difference in the amount or quality of the kills, with many more close range opportunities for my lower power setup.

I wasn't talking about the Iconix. Or any small light mini carbine. I was talking about the Zelos bullpup long barreled and buy all accounts solid (meaning hefty) airgun, that is not value priced. It is a $600 airgun that seemingly won't be performing to near the standard of an equivalently priced Avenge X. The only lipstick to put on this thing is the large magazine. I'm just calling it like I see it. I like Umarex and I love my Gauntlet, but I am not going to say nice things about something that I wouldn't want to own, but I will tell you why. This is just my opinion, and since Umarex has been listening to what their customers want, I am telling them what I don't want.

Misunderstood my apologies…🙏

No worries Luis! I know you love love your low powered smaller guns (Brococks are top tier though) and do great with them, but the Zelos isn't a mini and shouldn't be so close in power to the Notos, in my opinion. Which is just that, my opinion. Maybe Umarex believes people want Notos power with a bigger magazine and more shot capacity in a heftier package. Their call, but I doubt it.

Or they saw there is a hole in the market for a reasonable powered rifle. It says 600 retail, I have a feeling they will get down in the 500’s after a few months. It’s also a true bullpup, not a rifle made into one. The Aveng X bullpup is an unfortunate looking gun. I have a feeling they tuned it down for shot count with the small tube it’s initially offered with, since it has large magazine capacity. I have no doubt you can easily raise the power and sacrifice shot count. My Notos stock was doing 19 FPE.

This is the Snowpeak M60 specs. Still not a power house, but it will get 30 fpe.
Velocity (m/s / fps)304 / 1000 - 4.5 mm / .177
274 / 900 - 5.5 mm / .22
243 / 800 - 6.35 mm / .25
243 / 800 - 7.62 mm / .30
198 / 650 - 9 mm / .35

I remember a post from another site of a Snowpeak M60 22 in stock form doing 34 fpe with a 16 gr pellet. I know it’s not the same offering you’ll get from Umarex, but it has the bones.
From my experience with Snowpeak, the 25 version will need a lot more work than the 22 to achieve energy goals. If you don’t want to do a lot of work and you want 40+ FPE from a 25 cal, steer clear of the Snowpeaks that are mid to small size. Mine has been with a P35. It came doing 37 fpe, and it’s basically maxed out. From my experience and others, they basically make a 22 into a 25.

I wish them all the success in the world, that's why I give a real opinion and don't blow smoke ...

Since this is a SPA M60, I don't think they did themselves any favor detuning it. I know that tinkerers will turn it up, but still.

The Avenge X might not be the prettiest girl in the room, but boy can she dance! If your going to price your gun in the same ballpark, you have to stand out. That's all I'm saying.

I’m only referring to the bullpup version, and my feelings are the same for all the others like it (dreampup.)
We are lucky to have the amount of choices we have.
The cost to power ratio can go the other way also. I should be committed because my Huntsman Revere won’t put out the power an Avenge X will in 177, but it cost twice as much! Haha

The Revere is heavily revered for so many more reasons than numbers will ever tell (you chose wisely). It really shouldn't be in the conversation (or any Brocock) because their value confuses newbies that are looking to spend a lot of money(to them) on a Zelos. People (retirees) can start at the top, but there is no way you are going to really appreciate what you have in a top tier airgun unless you started at the bottom. Another opinion of mine, earned.

Haha, true. I started with a Royale 400 when they first came out. Single guy in his 20’s. I didn’t know how good I had it. I sold it when I was golfing more. I got back in the hobby a few years later and bought a Flashpup because I had a rodent problem. Man, the memories of the Royale flooded back and that Flashpup didn’t last long.

honestly at this point there’s already a lot of variations of guns at different power levels and price levels that essentially do the same thing which is sling lead. I understand manufactures want to create new products to appeal to different tastes but honestly those of us that have been doing this a while already know what we like and what we want. Also a flood different guns on the market really confuses new shooters shooters

I believe that Umarex made a deal with Snowpeak. Wes at Airgun Archery Fun has been selling these for a while. I'm not buying one of the Zelos. The Iconic at the low price I look forward to the reviews before purchasing.

It is very likely that Snowpeak, SPA, makes the Zelos for Umarex like they make the Notos for Umarex. I agree with Florida man about the fpe for the P35. I have on in 177, 22, and 25. The 177 came tuned to about 19 fpe, the 22 32fpe, and the 25 low 40s. I have since retuned the 25, added a power plenum, and drilled out the barrel port, transfer port and the path between them. The hammer spring limits me to 48-49 fpe. The barrel length is only 450 mm in the P35, however. I think the M60 is 610mm so it's velocity will be greater if the other parts are similar. I would be surprised if the M60 cannot do 35 fpe or more in 22 and 55 fpe or more in 25.

But I also think that many people overemphasize fpe. My P35-177 takes squirrels for me just fine as long as the shot is reasonably well placed. At 19 fpe. My Prod is tuned to similar power and also works fine. I admit I like the effect of the 32 fpe P35-22 on squirrels and I think it would get the job done with a little worse shot placement but I don't think the 48 fpe P35-25 is at all necessary. I shot 18 with it when it was tuned to 32fpe and it did great. 18 for 18 nice clean kills and the only two that ran were hit in the front of the chest and the pellet was under the skin in the rear end. 15 of 18 pass throughs. IMHO you just do not need 50 fpe to kill small game. Less than 20 works and low 30s is quite dependable for DRT.

I think a better way to look at power is to decide the weight of projectile you want to shoot and the velocity you want to shoot it at and select a gun that will do that. My P35-25 likes 34 grain JSBs so it's 800 fps is a little lower than I targeted but it is shooting them accurately and so it's fine. I bet the M60 can get the same 34 grain pellet to at least 850 fps which should be plenty for most purposes. The M60 in 22 should easily push the 21 grain Baracuda Match my P35-22 likes well up in the 800s and may possibly get the really heavy (for a 22 pellet) 25 grain JSBs up over 800. If you want to shoot slugs I am not very knowledgable but I would think the M60 power may indeed be a bit low. But SPA seems to normally use 1 in 21 twist which seems a bit slow for slugs too. For pellets the M60 IMHO will have plenty of power.

Don't be so sure that adding a 610mm barrel will get the power up. When I got my P15, years ago from Krale, Huma did not make a plenum extension yet, but the SPA M10's fit, so I got that, opened some ports, ...still right around 50fpe. So, just two years ago, I decided that it was time for a longer stiffer barrel, LW 23" unchoked .59", and still it is only capable of 50fpe. The limiting factor is most definitely the hammer spring but I decided against that project because I don't like how it makes the gun look like a science experiment. The block of the receiver isn't that big, and I wondered if the trigger components and sears would last under the extra stress, project bagged. It is an awesome 50fpe slug shooter now, loves 28gr Zan's.

I guess the point is that if SPA designed the Zelos like the P15/P35 they could have hampered it's ability to make more power the same way. I have not read any threads to this point on the M60, maybe people are pushing it up, but it is not necessarily a given, just because barrel length is longer.

The supplier of the bigger plenum I installed (Extreme Airguns) has supplied longer barrels for his customers and reports they get significantly increased power. I think he was talking about a 23 inch barrel too. I agree that would make a P15 or 35 look odd so I was not interested but I think under most circumstances a longer barrel will increase velocity in an airgun. But perhaps there potentially some offsetting factors too. But to really know what a M60 can do we need somebody to try it and tell us what their experience is. I'm pretty happy with a short light 50 fpe airgun.

Yeah, I read that too at the time, and I don't see how, without changing the hammer spring, because I certainly tried. My plenum is big, my ports were opened, opened the throat slightly, did the reverse angle drilling to the valve to miss the seat, reduced (even removed) the valve return spring, and added a 23" barrel with 3/16" port, and still at 50fpe. I did not change the hammer or the hammer spring, so I know that's where the problem for more power is for my gun. Like I said, I am done, I like it, but I don't understand how people were buying bigger plenums(like I have), and longer barrels(again, like I have), and getting more power without changing their hammer spring. Through testing, I am skeptical to say the least. I found the cut off for regulator pressure was right around 145bar. If you set it higher the hammer spring didn't/doesn't have the punch to get more fps. At least in my gun. I have never found a hammer spring, that was a drop in replacement that could do better either. The closest was the Gauntlets spring, which is, to my numbers, the same, but a lot easier to purchase.
