My Only Suggestion For The Pumpkin Carve

I had to think about whether I wanted to make any suggestions about the rules or scoring for the HAM 2026 Pumpkin Carve. I feel that it’s Pans challenge and it is a lot of fun as it is. The simpler the better. The only thing that I would like to see is a small change to the scoring. A simple bonus point if you shoot it over a certain distance and a bonus point if you shoot it with a springer or pumper. The idea being that you get a small reward for shooting long range i.e. over 50 or 60yds. But, your’re not penalized for shooting a springer or a pumper that might not be able to shoot at that range. It’s just an incentive to stretch your abilities and be awarded for it. One or two points is not enough to stack the deck, but could help someone to climb a position. I’ve never tried to see how far I can shoot my Diana 48 accurately, it could be interesting LOL. There’s definitely a difference carving a pumpkin at 100 yards and carving one at 35yds with any PCP.

Difficulty - someone shooting a pcp rifle at 10 yards will have suffered less of a challenge versus a shooter shooting a pistol at 100 yards.

but I agree if you shooting a break barrel or pump you deserve the condcideration of a higher score for difficulty
I will give some thought as to how we can possibly add for break barrel or pump handycap points and chat with the boss about it. but also I figure most shooting break barrel or pump will be at much closer distance so it may not necessary be a handycap because the shorter distance?

as for me I generally offer up 3 points then add for more difculty or take away for real easy?

since the member do the voting on each category I am not sure how to accomplish this other then for the moderators when they vote to add it in? I have avoided that because I feared it might look like the mods weighted the score so to speak.

I am hoping we have a easier scoring system in place this year

when it comes time to score we need to remind every one to add for dificulty.

Perhaps we can color the background of the name or add a bracket with the type of Airgun used by the shooter during voting one color for PCP another for pumper and then springer. This can help remind everybody of what that person was using.

This is just my opinion and it’s off the top of my head and not really thought out. There’s not enough participation for more than one class. I was thinking that the extra point/ points would be an automatic base points and everyone else’s points would just be added to it. It would be transparent. I’m going to shoot a pumpkin or pumpkin target with my Diana and see how it goes. The more I think about it, the only rule needed is this: “the major facial features of the pumpkin have to be carved by an airgun projectile in free flight, fired from an airgun”. Why not do it strictly by distance. 50 yds 1 point 30 yds .5 and 20 gets nothing.?

I just figured as shoot we all know its harder with a pum and up close is easier so the category for dificulty was there so we could decide ourselves and a lot points 1 through 5 accordingly?
this why I have ask to state all the details so we could take that into account.

I do like the idea of just tossing the break barrel and pump guys a 1 point handycap but if when everyone vote is they give them a point then they now have two point and that could be enough to beat out the more deserving winner?

I am already shooting my entry with my HW 95 .177 at 20y. If that gives me a bonus or a demerit, I’m okay with it, that was my choice.

I will say that if a thread has already been made to post the entries, imo it’s a little late in the game to start revamping the rules.

I would agree with you, except for the fact that there’s not a single entry: there’s not a single entry in the thread yet and Pan has stated that the challenge hasn’t started yet. I’m pretty sure he said beginning of October. But, having said that, I’m good with how things are. Keep it rolling. I also didn’t realize that you were serious about having already started the competition. I wouldn’t blame you for being irritated if things were changed now.

I say since you can fill it with a compressor and you get multiple shots it’s a PCP. A true pumper you only get one shot, right?

It is called a hybrid pcp officially I believe. It's so fun to treat like a pumper though.
