That's right, I stupidly shot the LED display on my Competition ProChrono DLX chronograph and it died. Good shot you say! I'll take that, but it wasn't I was aiming for. Oh well, it's served me well over the years. But now I think that I want something nicer, something more convenient. I've studied chronographs online and watched Youtubes 'til my eyes hurt, and I think I've decided on the Athlon Optics Rangecraft, selling for $399.00 at both Pyramyd and AoA. Do any of you have any guidence for me? Laugh and call me stupid, then give me your best wisdom, please. Thanks, Orv.

How?

I bought a $49 chronograph from Amazon. But I didn't want to attach it to the barrel, so I tied it to a tripod sitting in front of the muzzle. First few groups were no problem. That little guy was cracking out the fps. Nice!

Then, somehow (?) the barrel dipped a little lower, and I shot one of the little blue led bulbs that was sticking up from the base of the unit.

Oh well.

We've all made some ahem expensive mistakes Orv. It was just your turn! Lol

My son-in-law has the Athlon chronograph, I have used it, I have a Pro-Chrono, and the Athlon has been great to use. It sets up virtually instantly, it hasn’t missed a shot from an airgun in hundreds of shots. The only fear I would have is knocking it off of the bench. It should have a protective case like a phone. Had I used it first, I wouldn’t have bothered with the Pro Chrono. I like that it is rechargeable too.

Shooting a chrono is the same as riding a motorcycle. With a MC if you ride you are going to go down and if you've gone down you are going to go down again. Same with a chrono. If you've shot one you will shoot 1 again. My first one was 1 of those cheapy chronos. I ended up shooting it 6 times before it finally died.😁 The 1 I use now has a mark over the top of the cover where I shot a little to low.

I just today firmed up an order with AoA for an Athlon Optics chronograph. It sits on the bench beside my rifle making it pretty darn difficult for even an old fool like me to shoot it. I'm pretty excited about this chrono after studying all the manufacturer and yutube videos about it. I was able to use 1000 HAM points for a 10% price reduction too. Yaaa HAM points. Orv.

I bought one of those $39 jobs that are supposed to clamp to your barrel, but I didn't want to do that because I didn't want to change the harmonics and I figured it would be cumbersome on a breakbarrel, so I strapped it to a tripod and set it up near the barrel as I shot from a benchrest. Well I shot the little bulb off in the first shooting session. Now I wish I had a bigger gun to shoot this thing with! (AND I sort of wish I had clamped it to the barrel.)
