Ghost Why Is The Ghost so Quiet?

I took my barrel off of my Ghost .25 hp last night, like late last night at 12am. I removed the shroud. I was shocked at how much lead dust was in the shroud, but that’s a side note. I believe the Ghost is one of the quietest airguns without a moderator that I own. I thought I had read that there were baffles inside the shroud, but that was not the case. Not unless you consider the scraper assembly a baffle? I polished my barrel with J-B and then Flitz. At 1am I went out on my back porch, attached a moderator and fired off a couple of shots. I had to bypass hitting the steel backstop as that might be a little noisy at 1 am, even at 100yds from the house. The Ghost is very quiet without a moderator. When you add a moderator it is silent except for the mechanical noise of the action and hammer. My BRK Sonoran is loud even with a moderator. It’s not uncomfortably loud, but loud. I didn’t think that there was a large amount of dead space in the Ghost shroud to provide much suppression, but I’m assuming I’m wrong. Personally I’m not a believer in airgun baffles, but that’s another story. I’m also assuming that the Sonoran is louder because of the larger caliber (.30 vs .25)? Like a lot of people I’m awaiting a Sub-MOA barrel for my Ghost. My understanding is that you can’t use a shroud with the Sub-MOA barrel on the Ghost. I’m guessing that means it’s a lot louder? My real point I guess is that it appears that the Ghost shroud is very effective at sound suppression. Is there any reason a custom shroud couldn’t be added to the Ghost with Sub-MOA barrel? Is it a physical limitation such as clearance etc.? I haven’t removed the shroud from the Sonoran, why is it less effective than the Ghost shroud? This is really just idle conversation lol.

I am on the AOA waiting list for a .22 sub-moa barrel, and I have been toying with the idea of building a custom shroud for it (once i get it) depending on how loud it is, as I also suspect that the Ghost shroud assists with noise reduction.
I plan to do the same if it’s viable. Unfortunately none of the airgun forums allow any discussion of sound suppression theory, which is a shame.

The valving will play in to things as well. If the rifle is tuned correctly you shouldn't have much of a "pop" when the projectile leaves the barrel. A louder sound means you are wasting air and not gaining anything. Tune the rifle with the shroud off and then once you put the shroud back on you will be shocked how quiet it will be.

Your not wrong the Ghost HP is VERY quiet. I was 100% flabbergasted when the Ham review mentioned the Ghost is a bit loud in their opinion....it is not! I felt like I got ripped off the day i had it all set up and on the bench....I was ripping shots at 40Y to get it zeroed and it sounded like nothing😂....while it sent 18.13gr pellets to 998fps on minimum. (As already mentioned) yank the shroud off and shoot it without to see the difference. First time pulling my shroud I too was horrified how much lead junk was in there BUT since the 2 polishes and lubing the pellets its gone way done. The only reason I am still entertaining the idea of going with a L.W. slug barrel is to keep that shroud system vs a SubMoa without. @Solo1 has a .30 SubMoa barrel and was saying it was crazy loud and that he needed hearing protection🤔.....we need an update from him and his new Barrel!

Oh one more thing to add...in Canada any and all sound suppression is ripped out before we can get our hands on anything. My S510 is LOUD and has had it baffles removed (🙄) just to send that same 18.13 pellet to 880fps. Somehow the Ghost came through inspection as-is without an issue...so its definately not a moderator/suppresor/silencer, etc....its just that well designed!? With the power it lays down its one of the quietest airguns you can buy up here. Just shot this small pill bottle at 75Y today (took 1 shot, 1 mil holdover) no wind. POA was the bottles neck, I shoot against my brothers .22LR and His Anshutz Hmr 17....we do pretty well inside 100Y😉

The Ghost is a great gun from reports- Does anyone that owns a Ghost have a decibel meter test its sound level?

Yes, but unless you have a meter that costs thousands, they’re not certified and don’t usually have impulse sampling and don’t give you a true precise reading. A cheap meter does give you a ball park idea between your guns. I’ve measured all of my guns with and without moderation. Most max out at around 110db and moderate down to around 88db. I’m writing my post for any level of reader, so don’t be offended if your knowledge is greater than mine lol. Keep in mind that in the world of decibels, every 3db change is a doubling or halving of the base level. So 88db is half as loud as 91db. But, you don’t know what frequency is being measured and that can make a big difference in perceived sound levels. Back to my original point: if you measure my Ghost with someone else’s non certified meter, it’s likely to give a different number. The standard distance to measure a sound source is one meter and that makes a difference too. I will shoot one shot unmoderated with both the ghost and the Sonoran and post it.

It’s so nice to be able to go on the back porch and take a few quick shots. Sonoran ,30 unmoderated and moderated at 1m

Roger that, obviously tune and ammo type can differ the sound as well-

Ghost HP .25 unmoderated and moderated, measured at 1 meter. According to the $30 meter, not much difference. The difference is perceptible to the ear, but not by much. My Ghost is the only rifle that I have, where I shot it for an hour before I noticed that I hadn’t attached a moderator. OSHA states that 85db is safe for 8 hours. I think a t around 87 db the meter is sampling the mechanical noise of the rifle. Notice the unmoderated Ghost measures lower than the moderated Sonoran. The Sonoran is at around 160 bar and the Ghost is at about 120 bar. The Sonoran needs a better moderator

I’ve had a few rifles with really good shrouds. And some I don’t know why they even put one on.

The good list:
Bullshark/P35
Kalibrgun Cricket

Why did they try list:
Huntsman Revere
Concept Lite
Atomic (understandable for its size)

Did the big Tuxing bottle come with your Sonoran or you get it separately?
It was a Memorial Day sale bonus. I like that I can get about sixty shots with it, but it has a Major drawback. Some people may not agree with what I’m about to say but, oh well, my mind can be changed. My experience with the BRK Ghost and the BRK Sonoran is that the Picatinny rails on BRK guns are a design afterthought. The lowest rails are too short to be of much use. The lower rail on the Sonoran is not even in full contact with the stock. It appears to be angled away to keep it somewhat level. That does not contribute to stability at alll. Look at the first photo and you can see the gap between the pic rail and the stock. I had to remove my extended Arca rail as it could not handle the bipod being that far forward. The long bottle ends up contacting the barrel, not exactly good for a floating barrel. Even just extending the legs further forward has an affect. If you look at the second photo, you can see there’s not much space between the barrel and the bottle. It gets closer when the butt is raised and there’s more pressure on the pic rail. I might be wrong, but I believe that it would be less of an issue with the shorter bottle.
