.22 Which is the JSB MRD 25.39 "Shallow" design?

Yes!

The implication with the newly designated "Shallow" and "Deep" was that there'd be greater transparency in what we're buying.....and the hope was that there'd be greater uniformity with the new efforts to separate various shapes of the MRDs into their respective tins.

I agree that both of these could be considered shallow skirted MRDs. But why oh why are there two different variations of the supposedly same "new" pellet?

maybe as simple as some older ones not compleatly cleaned up and after the change over some fall in the pile?
no clue.
if wee see more then we will know the old dies are still being used.

Know this is oversimplification, but can it really be that hard to:

1 - Get a set of dies that match?
2 - Put product from that set of dies into tins without mixing in product from another set?

Look, I've always used JSB & probably will continue until another manufacturer decides to use soft lead & design for decent bc. Just can't wrap my head around how their consistency got (& stays) this poor.

simple, its the pandemic ( in my smarss azz tone ) : )

Woulda been nice to see 3 or more side by side from that tin, so we can see oddball out?! There is definitely confusion on these pellets. I showed my MRD stock on a thread here a week or 2 back. My tins are definitely not the shallow versions here or as in Hameditors post on the new Mrds. Buuuut they aren't quite like the deep ones either. Neither are apparently "new" just better sorted..... but apparently maybe not 😒😪 At least the grands are new so hopefully very consistent.

I've been blown away that they can't just make identical dies. And this is a JSB problem from long before the .22 MRDs ever existed.

They're always monkeying around with the dies for all their pellets. I can't remember where but I vaguely remember seeing or hearing a JSB rep say that it's impossible to make identical dies......okay, fair enough, perhaps not microscopically identical, but there's absolutely no reason why the dies need to be so drastically different that the pellets coming off them are very obviously not the same shape, just with the naked eye.

The dies are nowhere near within normal tolerance level for machined parts. The dies are simply not the same. The two pellets shown above is a perfect example.

Hobby machinists with cheap lathes are capable of duplicating parts much more closely than JSB is capable of duplicating dies. Something doesn't add up.

I on my 4th tin of new shallow redesigned, all skirt depths seem constant.
Still get a odd flyer, probably me though.

I've still got 19 tins of MRD from 22, definitely worse than my experience with the new ones so far.

I mentioned and hoped the current new ones stayed consistent.
Hopefully that was just a rogue pellet someone found, did they test it? Compare accuracy with the others in the tin?

As ever, more confused than amused.

i make microphone parts on very vintage machines you can make dies so close that the avergae bear could not tell the difernaces that is probably something they just say as an excuse to not do the job correctly?

This morning I measured a dozen for depth and all were +- .007 of .08. I bought 2 tins of deep, shallow and 28 and weight sorted 1 tin of each the shallow were most consistent 28 worst but all were less than .8 gr variance where the last tin of regular mrds were 1 1/2 gr variance.

Well my limited testing so far @ 100 yds says the sorted pellets are more consistent than the old mrds but still throw what could be called occasional flyer. But and its a big 1 @ 100 yds it really only takes a breath of air to move them quite a bit. In testing today @ 75 yds groups were tighter than 100. I would have to say that the new pellets are better than any older mrds that i have used and would like to thank jsb for at least trying to give us a better product and would like shooters to remember that pellets aren’t the best projectile for that distance. Ya gotta realize the limitations.

After thinking about what i wrote a bit more i thought i should break down the weights.
Shallow. 25.4&.5 in 1 tin 1 tin odd
Deep 25.3&4 .5&6 & 1 tin odd
28 gr. .3&4. .5&6. .7&8 1 odd tin

I didn’t count how many of whatever but the odd tins didn't have many and i haven't shot straight from the tins yet but again the weights are much closer than the old mrds I've had.

@Solo1

Do the Shallows and Deep all look the same, or are there multiple Shallow and Deep designs in your tins?

Like Franklink said, yes it's impossible to make dies that are microscopically the same measurements, but those differences shouldn't be visible to the naked eye. That is my concern. Have you got multiple Shallow designs like in the picture I posted above, or one design visible to the naked eye?

Same question for the Deeps.

Thanks!

i havent noticed a difference in the tin i opened and sorted and after measuring a dozen they were a few thousands of .08”. Though they aren’t the easiest to measure exactly
