Break Barrel What lubricant do you use in your spring gun

I was wondering what kinds or types of lube that shooters use in their spring guns for the spring and piston seal. Like everything else I am sure that people have a secret sauce that they swear by that works well for them.

On a side note, I am getting ready to possibly take my 97 apart and I have not acquired any grease for the spring and piston seal yet.

I would hope it’s silicone oil only for the piston seal (assuming it’s a higher power gun).

On each of my springers (TX200 & HW97K) I only use a molybdenum grease on the spring and other parts where metal contacts metal. I use a small amount on the perimeter of the piston seals, being careful not to get any on the piston face. I also use some sparingly on such places as the cocking shoe and arm, again, only where metal touchs metal. All of my guns gets a wipe wipe down with a Balistrol impregnated rag following each use. I stay away from silicone greases as they don't do well with rubber O rings. Regarding the servicing of your HW97 . . . please use a spring compresser for this job. The HW97 is under significant preload and trying to accomplish the servicing of this gun without a compresser will leave you hurt. Orv.

Thanks for the reply and advice. As far as the spring compressor goes, I just happened to see one for sale from Optics Planet about seven years ago at a heavily discounted price. As my wife would say, it was so cheap that I had to buy it. Pretty sure it was being discontinued, I could have never made one half as good for what it cost. Anyways, I haven’t had a use for it up till now but plan to with my 97. I try very hard not to do stupid things in my old age anymore that might get me hurt.

Yip I watched his TX200 video twice and ordered his tuned kit and some of the Moly lube he sells ("Bum-slide") last week.... I figure if he uses it, it should work fine for me
I used red tacky grease supplied with my vortek spring for my Slavia and I know for certain some got on the piston face as it was dieseling after the rebuild. I've heard some people say use it, others say not to. Silicone grease is OK for rubber seals but won't help out with metal to metal contact.

Yep, TbT knows his stuff. My HW30 is closing in on 14000 rounds. I'm going to spend time with that one this winter with his kit also. I never touched mine before. Kind of looking forward to it.

I know some people use a moly powder on the piston seal. They rub it on the surface of the seal. It's a dry powder so there's absolutely no dieseling. As far as the spring I just use the lube that votec supplied with the spring kit. I sprayed the bore of the Hatsan 135 I had to replace the piston seal with a dry Teflon piano lube. I haven't really tested it much because it's a real!@#$ it cock and when I shoot it it recoils so violently forward it stings my trigger finger.

So I got my 97 apart and found that about an inch away from one of the spring ends that a coil had a crack in it that was almost broken off. I had shot it on a regular basis last season so that spring at least for me did not last long. I bought the gun used from AOA and the salesperson I talked to did not know the history. The gun was in pretty good condition so I was thinking it didn’t get used much. I put the same stock # spring back in with a new seal and so far (30 shots) it is shooting as good as it did before I started having problems. Hoping that this spring will last longer than what I am guessing was the original. If not then the next spring will be a macarri or something similar. I will say that it would have been really scary to try to take it apart and put it back together without a spring compressor.
