EVOL Valve poppet would not seat upon resealing from zero

Had an interesting hiccup after a simple reg adjustment turned into 2 days of not being able to get the gun to take any air. I have had this gun apart countless times, very familiar with it and its workings and had never had the issue. I tried all the tricks to get the poppet to seat, but it would not at all. A call to AOA also left them stumped as the Evol valve has literally two parts, the valve body and the poppet. No springs or inner seals. I decided just to remove the valve and inspect.

Removing the valve revealed that indeed the last bit of travel needed for the valve to close was not happening. There was nothing that jumped out at me that was holding it up, so my initial thought was valve pin was bent possibly? I just couldn't see how this was possible, so instead I just started turning the pin in circles inside the valve body. As I did this It got noticeably easier and the pin started to slide through the valve body more easily. I pulled the pin out again and noticed a bit of "tarnish" going on about 2/3 the way towards the hammer side. I worked this away just with my fingers until it would slide in the body mostly effortless. Then I put a very tiny amount of ultimox on the pin, and wala sliding free and clear. I reinstalled the valve and all other parts, hooked up compressor and problem solved.

My guess is this bit of crud had also been causing issues I hadn't noticed like valve sticking on firing or closing. On a side note, I was going to replace the two o rings on the outside of the valve body but they were absolutely flawless and looked brand new. Just thought I would share my findings incase this becomes an issue for anyone else.

That does sound stressful. Really hate when stuff like that happens.
Haha a little irritating but not too stressful. I have a business and 4 small children, airguns are my de-stress 😁

These guns are well built machines, but even the best machines require maintenance and repair. Things like this are so not common so i just figured it might help someone in the future not chase thier tail trying to figure it out.

thanks for posting little things that slip by can cause a massive amount of grief at times.

I'm a little late here but I'll post the answer to PM I received.

Glad you got it fixed. FYI The valve o-rings pretty much last forever, the most common is the poppet catching on the front of the transition between the valve bore and plenum, this where the bumping comes in. Next is debris damage to the poppet face, and finally corrosion or crud on the valve stem.

The beauty of Ultimox is that is has a very good corrosion preventative. We lightly coat the stem and then wipe wipe softly with a microfiber rag. This leaves enough grease with minimal drag.

I'm curious, do you have a compressor and what type?

I'll add to this. The clearance between the valve stem and body is very close and the part finishes are very smooth. The reason is to eliminate the o-ring common is other systems that can cause sticking and an have no significant passing of air.

Early EVOLs have a high strength steel stems and newer one use 17-4 stainless which is more corrosion resistant. The reason I put this info out there is for users to understand that quality air, air that is dry and oil free is very important for all airguns. The water can cause corrosion and the oil will wash out the Ultimox as well a potential ignition hazzard.

Hey Tom, my ‘oldest’ Evol has serial number 0524 does this Evol already have the 17-4 stainless steel stem?
