The War has Begun

My property is heavy with squirrel population due to my peach trees they eat all of, my pear trees they eat 1/3 of, several nut trees, and large pines in the area. Unfortunately, this has also led to them chewing wiring on vehicles of my tenants. The last being the reason my wife finally quietly agreed to greenlight me pesting them.

Today at the end of my practice session with the Pinty Timber, one was calmly sitting on my long range backstop watching me. So I drew first blood in the war with an 18.1gr pellet to the dome at 45 yards. Instant drop with nothing more than the throes to follow.

Next step is to get her to agree to eating them, until then the local wildlife get fed I guess.

It’s supposed to be in the mid 70s here this weekend so the squirrels should be out in masses.

I think I’ll put the Sniper to work .

They are super active despite the cool weather here... and several crying at me after this.

Great shot! You bagged any more? Those tree rats are definitely a hazardous nuisance. My wife won't let me clean and cook them either, so I use them to feed the clowder of stray cats that have magically grown around our house. A pellet, or an 18 grain slug is a lot cheaper than a bag of Purina cat chow for sure.

There has been one other I'm certain I hit squarely, but it went down in neighbors yard and I couldn't find it through the wooden fence.

Though I gotta agree, there's been a couple around here that have dropped immediately and done the slow drop but no carcass to be found. They're getting smart I'm tellin' ya.

They seem to be getting tougher to kill too. I saw on jump, miss his limb, then fall, minimum 40 feet at least, outta huge oak at corner of my front yard. He hit the street with a loud smack, belly first! I couldn't help but laugh, thought, dumb squirrel. It was raining so I stayed under my garage, enjoying my cigar, when the beast crawled up, shook it off and ran back to the tree, and up he went.

I usually know when they drop through the branches. If they stop, no kill. If they keep dropping, dead.

Also if they hit the creek, sploosh, dead.

Nice shot PapaT! It's still my favorite rifle to take squirrel hunting and for rabbits as well. I hope ours last for a few years or much longer.
