Realistic Expectations

Didn't watch the whole video, but I fast forwarded to the screen grab you sent.

By the vídeo, sure doesnt look like Jared is using a 28inch barrel. So I assume it's not the HiLITe like I was sent.
For comparison, the Red Wolf in .22 with the short barrel that I was sent a few years ago maxed out about 20fpe less than the Red Wolf HP or what HiLite or whatever they were calling it at the time. It was something like 40fpe for the Red Wolf Standard, and 60fpe for the longer barreled, higher powered version. What I'm getting at is that the particular BW that Jared is using in that video is the correct configuration for shooting 22 grain pellets. This is all the "buy the correct configuration for what you want to do" part of the original post here.

Jared is also Jared. He does well at EBR most years.

Also, the most vocal of Blackwolf detractors on the forums (including here) don't own a Blackwolf in any configuration. This isn't only about the BW, but also their un-met expectations with other expensive airguns.
As you didn’t watch the whole video yet: he went over the specs of all of the BW variations and made a point of the fact that there is no difference in power between the Hilite and the tube versions. He said the only difference is shot count. I can see the barrel length point.

I bought a Chevy Canyon and I'm LIVID that it won't pull my 42 foot, 3 axle gooseneck camp trailer.

I bought a GMC 3500/F350 and am PISSED that the gas mileage sucks so bad.

I bought a Toyota Corolla and am getting absolutely SMOKED at the local racetrack. Unacceptable, I paid $30k for this car!!!

I bought a BMW M8 and it should offroad much better than this for $125,000. What are they even charging that much for if it can't go mudbogging?!?!?

And on and on.

Luckily the BW is more modular than vehicles and a different barrel/caliber/etc can be purchased and various settings changed to make it do what you REALLY wanted it to do.
 
Okay. I'm not seeing your point.

The short barreled .22 Red Wolf maxed out around 43-44fpe if I remember correctly. And that was the second gen of the electronics board. The earlier short barreled Red Wolf maxed out around 37-38fpe I believe. While their longer barreled version was most of 60fpe, in .22.

Again. Buy what you want. Don't be mad when you bought something that doesn't match what you want to do with it. And if you did buy something that doesn't match what you want, or you needs changed, than be ready to change some variables to get there.
My point was my short barreled redwolf would not shoot over 30 fpe on hi power it shot 10 gr to 920 i think it was and 13 gr to 780 or so and that was gcu 2
 
@BenjeneerJohn That’s strange. I don’t recall ever receiving a shot target with a new Benjamin/Crossman airgun. I own 5 and 3 were purchased new. I still have a new Bulldog in the box that I’ve never shot. I’ll have to check in there and see. The last one I purchased was my M357 that I hunt with and post about.

To be clear, are you saying that a target that has been shot prior to shipping (for testing) is included in the box with new Benjamin models up until around 2022? All of mine have been purchased after 2018. The un-shot rifle still in the box is an original .357 Bulldog, so I’ve probably had it for at least 3-4 years. I’d have to look at my paperwork.
I am sorry I should have stated what products we put targets in the box. We put targets in with our Marauder, Armada, Marauder Pistol and Challenger 2021. They all started to get targets in the box back in 2017/2018ish. Then they were the actual shot target. Now they are printouts.

We do not put targets in the box for Bulldogs. Bulldogs are shot for velocity and accuracy before they are serialized and shipped.

It's already been stated here by people smarter than I, but gonna repeat it anyway becaus it's that important.

As best you can, research the hell out of a rifle & it's available configurations. Then be honest with yourself about whether or not it's likely to excel at the particular task you're buying for. My unsolicited & likely unwanted advice:

- If you want to shoot heavy for caliber projectiles, do not buy the shorter barrel version.
- If you want to shoot light or average for caliber projectiles, do not buy the longer barrel version.
- Know it's currently en vogue, but beware claims of world class results with drastically different projectile types & weights. The great results might be true, but probably didn't occur by adjusting built in tuning controls only. Likely involved hardware changes (different barrel, different plenum, transfer port work etc). Do not expect turning a couple knobs will have a rifle shooting stellar scores with both 15-20 grain pellets and 38-40 grain slugs.
- Consider the stock choices & how they mesh with your intended purpose. Last rifle I purchased is in a "tactical" configuration (two piece stock). It's fantastic for my intended purpose, bucket & sticks shooting- weight savings at the rear make it balance much more to my liking. Would not recommend that version for benchrest; it's a pain in the tookus trying to get it solid on a rear bag before each shot. The standard, one piece stock would be much better for that application.

Admit that none of those bullet points address what seems to be the number one reason for expectation vs reality complaints, at least recently- bad barrels. Sure seems like reports of terrible barrels have exploded the last year or two. Not just losing the barrel lottery by getting one of the 99 typical instead of the 1 in 100 magic barrels. I'm talking truly crappy, make a skilled machinist puke bad. Not just an airgun manufacturer or two either, nor just one particular barrel maker- seems endemic.
Butchered crowns or leads, smeared lands, deep tooling chatter marks, severe chokes where there should be none... yeah, those are absolutely legitimate complaints. Wouldn't expect a mirror finish inside the barrel of a low priced gun, and even on the high end guns they can't all be magical. But a decent crown & lead, no gouges, and choke (or lack thereof) as advertised should be prerequisites for getting out the door- regardless of price.

It just makes me think there should be an official HAM “New Gun Expectations” challenge. When you receive a new gun shoot a group at some predetermined distance and post it with your initial impressions. If people were honest, it would provide a useful record of what to realistically expect out of the box. No, tuning, put a sight on dial it in enough to put it on paper and see what it does. Of course getting shooters to participate in challenges is the real challenge 😀.

Based on some recent comments and conversations, it seems that many airgunners expect a gun to come out of the box performing at its peak potential. I understand the idea of "I paid the premium for a high-end airgun, the very first 5 shot group at 100 yards out of the box should be submoa." Or, the "there's no excuse for a new $2, 3, 4k etc airgun to not be able to shoot starling eyes at 100 yards right after I sight it in." In these discussions, we even see the warranty claims folks jump in and be upset that their gun doesn't shoot as good as so and so's gun, so they should be eligible for replacement until it does. All of that is not in-line with reality. Outside of custom guns, built to a specific purpose, using a specific projectile, airguns simply don't come out of the box shooting to their highest potential.

And this is why.
  • Airguns perform best at certain pressures. Each one is unique. Even regulated guns sometimes prefer that you stop shooting 20-30 bar above the reg pressure, or don't fill to the max working pressure. The only way to figure this out is to spend time shooting it.
  • Airguns come out of the box with the adjustments at a certain configuration. The odds of THAT OEM configuration agreeing with whatever projectile you want to shoot from it are slim to none. And the odds of it performing its best with those configurations and your chosen projectile are even slimmer. And guess what....the pressures mentioned a second ago are likely to change when you figure out what projectile you want to shoot versus the projectile the barrel wants to shoot.
  • The OEM regulator set pressure is likely to need changed from OEM to match your desires and purpose for the gun.
  • The hammer spring tension will need to be figured out. High reg/low hammer tension? or low reg/high hammer tension? Only way to know what's best is to test it out and see. Sometimes what you're wanting to do will require a different hammer spring rate than the OEM spring.
  • Barrel
    • You can't change the twist rate of the barrel. And that twist rate is only appropriate for certain projectiles at certain speeds. The owners decision to shoot a projectile at xyz fps (or at any fps) that doesn't match the twist rate doesn't make the gun faulty, nor does it make a warranty claim.
    • Choke/no choke, again, projectile choice versus the gun you chose to buy.
    • How often do you need to clean the barrel? Gotta figure that out, cuz accuracy will go south when it needs cleaned. Warranty claim for a dirty barrel, hell no.
    • What does the barrel clean entail to get back to good shooting? Gotta figure that out through trial and error. Is it the manufacturers responsibility to warranty a leaded up barrel after you decided to shoot cheap and hard high antimony content pellets through it for too long before you decided to address how leaded up it is? Nope.
    • Yes, barrels can sometimes be coaxed into agreeing with what you want it to shoot from polishing, and/or lapping.
  • Plenum size. You bought an airgun with a plenum too big for what you want to do. You bought an airgun with a plenum too small for what you want to do. Warranty claim? Nope. You should have researched your purchase better, ie, you bought the wrong gun for your intended purpose.
  • Projectiles. You spend a couple weeks to a couple months figuring all of the above out, and have a sweet deal going. Your gun shoots like you want it to. Then the manufacturer changes the projectile slightly. Or discontinues it altogether.
In short, variables. Lots and lots of variables. To get peak performance, all of them need to be experimented with, studied, compared.

What we don't see when a guy wins a big competition, is all of the work that went into getting that gun to shoot the way it does. And occasionally somebody with rose-colored glasses will say they didn't do much to make it look like it was all the shooter and not the gun, but they did. They at least polished the barrel and spent some time vetting projectiles and settings to see what it shoots best and at what speeds. Massaged the trigger to suit them, played with various moderators, etc.

Achieving high performance (or being competitive if that's your thing) from/with an airgun is typically a long, drawn out process. It's not realistic to expect that paying more money means you get to skip all the steps.

Warranties cover defects. Paying for a gun with a good warranty doesn't equate to a shortcut to the winners circle or a short cut to sub-moa groups.

What paying for a high-end gun DOES get a guy, is a much more refined user experience. Paying for high-end gets you long term support for the gun. And of course, if there's a defect in the manufacture of a certain component of the gun, that's where the warranty kicks in. And, once you've worked through the necessary steps to figure out how to get the gun to shoot your chosen projectile, high-end is highly likely to outshoot budget guns.

As a parallel conversation....I have a gun that has been re-barreled 7 times. Sometimes the barrel a gun comes with simply doesn't want to do what you want the gun to do. That was the case here. The OEM barrel shot a low BC/low weight pellet extremely well. But I wanted a high BC/high weight pellet to shoot out of the gun, and I wanted it to shoot extremely well. Since my wants and the reality of the gun didn't match, I had to pay for barrels and machining until I found one that would shoot at a level that I wanted the gun to shoot. It also required swapping parts around, valve components, etc to get it to produce the fpe that I wanted. In short, the gun I bought didn't match what I wanted it to do, so I had to customize it to get it to do what I wanted it to do.

Both of these pages were shot from the same gun, same barrel, same settings. But each is with a different batch of the supposedly same pellets. Left side is probably something like 2.5-3" average group size. The six groups on the right average 1.06", which is 1.015MOA. The pellets on the left will shoot like the one on the right, but the pellet on the left needs 25-30 more feet per second to do it. Because the pellet manufacturer changed the skirt slightly and shifted the center of gravity.

Without the investment of time to do the experimentation and a comparison, the owner of the gun responsible for the left side would be complaining to the manufacturer. While the owner of the gun on the left would be quite pleased. But we know these were both from the same gun. (Variables).
Franklink, this is one of the most honest breakdowns I’ve seen in a long time. A lot of folks really do expect a brand‑new rifle to magically shoot its absolute best with whatever pellet or slug they feel like using, at whatever speed they think it “should” run. But like you said, every airgun has its own pressure band, its own preferred projectile, and its own quirks you only figure out by actually shooting it. Even regulated guns have a sweet spot, and barrels only stabilize what they’re designed for. People forget that tuning, testing, and matching ammo is part of the hobby, not a warranty issue. High‑end guns give you better refinement and support, but they don’t skip the work. Your example with the two pellet batches really drives it home — same gun, same tune, totally different results. That’s the reality a lot of shooters don’t want to hear, but it’s the truth.

I wanted to knock out some variables yesterday so I went to the Greenhouse to shoot some groups with the Ghost; 48Y, shooting its favorite ammo. New, out of the box both of my Pcps printed tinnnny groups. Over time both of them have opened up, and I continually strive to achieve that out-of-the-box accuracy. I took pictures of both guns very first groups, glad I did; I look back at them whenever I doubt, I guess my experiences don't mimic others? (But i've also had zero leaks in 5+ collective years of pcp ownership).
Anyways....I guess I was expecting pellet on pellet....that didnt happen🤭.
I also continue to notice my Ghost does not like shooting down to regulated pressure. If you look at the (last) group its really 2 smaller groups. Consistently, when the bottle pressure is 10Bar above Reg it starts dropping POI. 100% certain it is NOT the bottle gauge as it perfectly matches my 3 Hill filling gauges both digital and mechanical, on both my fill systems spot on. (Reg is set to 150B)

I've applied the concept of Gaussian distribution to airgun barrels before, and will again here. "Gaussian" is also known as the bell curve of distribution, also referred to as normal distribution. There's also some Central Limit Theorem ideas at play when applying these statistical concepts, in this scenario, as well as most others, since this applies to data distributions of so much of our universe.

68% will be within 1 standard deviation of the average (the peak).
About 96% will be within 2 standard deviations of the average, about 48 % on each side of average.
The last 4-6ish % will be in the exceptional/outlier areas (both ends of the bell curve). As it applies to barrels, that will be either exceptionally crappy, or exceptionally amazing.

So, say we sample 100 airgun barrels. 68 of them will be fairly acceptable, on either side of average. About 13 of them will be subpar, about 13 of them will be noticeably better than average. 2-3 of them will be utter trash. 2-3 of them will those rare magic barrels we all hope that we luck into receiving.

I'm up around 65-70 barrels that I've personally spent time shooting. The bulk of that has been Lothar Walther, but other high end examples of barrel manufacturers have been: CZ, Weihrauch, Feinwerkbau, BSA, Shin Sung, and more recently SubMOA. Sprinkle in some Chinese barrels here and there. From my barrel testing/comparing, I would conclude that this statistical concept of the bell curve of distribution holds pretty true to airgun barrels.

And that brings up what we so often hear people call "the barrel lottery." Sometimes we just lose the lottery, BUT statistically speaking, for every 2-3 utterly crappy barrels put out by any manufacturer (or 16-18 if we increase our expectations) there are about 85 barrels that are gonna shoot better than their owners are probably capable of....once they've worked through the variables to get the most out of it.
