The new Macavity MA8 PCP air rifle is coming soon. It’s already available for pre-order at Pyramyd. With the MA8, the company is swinging into the big league!
Macavity Arms has chosen to launch new models at the Pyramyd Cup before. So it’s possible that we may see the MA8 there this week.
As expected in most new PCP air rifles, the MA8 is to be available in multiple calibers – .177, .22, .25, .30 and .35. However its unusual to find that all four caliber bolt probes are bundled with the gun. So a caliber change requires only a new barrel and magazine.
There’s also to be a choice of barrel lengths – 500 mm, 600 mm, 700 mm and 800 mm.
The MA8 also incorporates a barrel shroud and silencer, as can be seen prominently displayed in these photographs.
But – in an unexpected twist – these barrels are designed to be interchangeable not only with other Macavity MA8 barrels, but also with FX barrels! So – if you want to use a FX barrel on your MA8 (or vice versa) – go right ahead!
The MA8 features a number of other interesting design elements that are worth study.
One is the externally-adjustable regulator. This enables precise and repeatable tuning, with clicks that can be heard and felt. One click equals 1 BAR (14.5 PSI) of pressure, and the air rifle does not need to be degassed to increase or decrease pressure.
It’s adjustable between 600 and 3200 PSI (41-220 BAR).
That sounds as if it should be a big improvement compared to the alternative of trying to estimate regulator pressure based on a small gauge of possibly uncertain accuracy.
By the way, that cheekpiece is height-adjustable, another good move.
Another interesting feature is the electronic trigger. True, electronic triggers themselves are not new, but Macavity has taken the concept one step further.
On the MA8, the complete trigger and pistol grip assembly can be slid back and forth along the lower Arca rail. This allows perfect positioning of trigger and grip to suit the needs of each individual shooter.
The top Picatinny optics rail can be swung horizontally to compensate for scope cant. That’s yet another innovative feature and shows some really creative thinking from the design team!
Here’s yet another feature that I have not previously seen on a bullpup PCP air rifle…
The rod connecting the sidelever cocking handle and the breech is external. Yes, it’s on the outside of the gun!

This may be the most polarizing feature of the MA8. It’s difficult to suppress the thought that it could be subject to impact in the field, with the potential for damage and cocking issues. But I’m sure Macavity must have tested that very thoroughly before finalizing the design…
Maximum claimed power is 206 Ft/Lbs – probably in .35 caliber.
