Others Effects of scope height

Yip, I personally run my scopes just hugging the gun! I watch alotta people run guns like the impact and ghost which already has a high top rail with high mounts and snicker.....the 'apex' will be mighty small. Close range shooting won't be accurate and you'll have to hold under/over more in general. My S510 I have zeroed at 40 but it shoots EXACT same poi at 20 and 30 yards as well. point and click. At 50 I have a inch drop. I don't use any shooting apps but I assume that has to be taken into account in the programs too? I love watching these youtubers as they progress in life and stick with the hobby!

I had heard that a lower height was best but this confirmed and reminded me that it depends on your intended use. Not that one is better but that each are good for specific needs. Having an understanding of the differences is extremely useful knowledge.

For field target i prefer a higher scope as it makes ranging the longer targets where the scope doesn’t range quite as well a little less critical and makes the near yardages a little more critical but thats where most scopes range best.

From my time playing with PB’s I always read and I think was universally accepted, to my knowledge anyway, scopes were supposed to be as close as the objective bell would allow. On a lot of airguns that just isn’t possible because of the magazine feeding the pellet from the six o’clock position and all the rest of the magazine is above that point. And making scope height harder, every scope ring manufacturer has their own idea of what the public needs. I have one hell of a collection of 30mm rings of all different pic to centerline dimension. Whenever I get a new rifle it’s a process to see which ring will allow the smallest gap between scope tube and magazine.
For the past two years I have just made a dope chart showing the reticle and then I draw lines on the verticle portion of reticle to show where I aim for different yardages.
I typically got my zero at 25 yards and all references were then above or below the horizontal portion of the reticle. It worked OK.
This fall when I got my Evol and Paradigm I decided I want to start dialing instead. With my short attention span I thought it might be beneficial to just switch to holding right on reticle center (as long as I remember to dial when required). So far so good.
The Evol and Paradigm have a hell of a built in pic rail drop, I guess because a lot of folks must shoot long range and it obviously helps. But I only tinker out to fifty yards for my hunting and plinking so it is not needed. When I put a set of rings on that allowed minimal scope/magazine clearance I ran out of elevation adjustment on my Element Helix. So I had to buy some FX adjustable rings and go to the trouble of finding out what compensation to use to put me in a spot where I was in about the lower quarter of the verticle travel and at the same time the proper yardage so all dialing would be in the UP direction since the scope has a ZERO STOP and I like to have it two or three elevation clicks from my zero. And having adjustable cheekpiece really helps getting the ideal cheekweld.
Adjustable rings are generally a bit taller than regular rings so my magazine/scope clearance is a bit higher than I like but with good dope from actual (not ballistic app) shooting I have rock solid dope. Wind would be my biggest variable with that dope but I generally sight in with pretty calm conditions so that I have good dope. In the woods where I hunt it’s pretty dense so wind isn’t an issue, plus, I typically don’t hunt when it’s nasty windy.

I've whined about that fact myself🤣....all the adjustable mounts seem to be very tall! My go to has always been start with medium rings and then go from there. During covid there seemed to be a serious scope ring shortage and I was super limited to what I could buy. I was hoping the med rings would work with my Tx200 as it has the loading slot up front for the pellet and worked fine thankfully. On my S510 Med rings are the lowest you can go bc of the magazine. You definitely need to start spending more coin on scopes when u want to dial. But I am curious why dial if you only shoot to 50 yards - rcs9250?

Why dial ? I want my pellet to go as close to POA as possible. I’m not interested in “close enough”. If that means I’m anal.. oh well. Often times I am presented with shots as close as 10 yards. With a high mounted scope, a ten yard shot is way below the reticle center. I found that out one day hunting. A squirrel was ten yards away, I aim, shoot, miss. What the heck? I get a second squirrel, same distance. I miss, and I’m using a TriggerStik. So I make a small mark on the tree bark. I aim and shoot. Dang, shot is way low. After that, back to the range and work up dope every five yards from ten out to fifty. Now, one shot one kill. I’m happy with that score.

Hmmm..I haven't tried any of my guns at 10yards tbh....I will definitely try that that next shooting session, as per the video I guess my shots will be low too?! Makes sense about being dead on for sure, my Hawke scopes are not quick click friendly so I hold over for now. Gonna get a ghost this spring and zero it for 50 as my long range gun hopefully. Will def need me some click turrets.

Here are 2 screen shots of my ghost 25 cal shooting 33.9 jsb @ 924 fps. First is 11 yards second is 50. Oh and it zeroed at 45.

My 177 ghost is similar at 11 but drops off more on the long end and is sighted at 40. I choose my farthest 0 point with strelock so i only have hold overs and no hold unders. For me it makes it easier and less confusing. With the 25 im within .2 inch of 0 from 24-50 yds which means i use center cross from 24-50 and am below before and after that.

Idk how to interpret your photos.

Well on the 1st 1 you see the bull to hit ctr you use the mark on ctr in the pic this is with the described gun and velocity the 2nd pick is how you would aim @ 50 yds. The numbers down the right side are the yardages for the marks to their left
I had the same question but figured the distance had to be different. The distance was cropped out on the 50 pic.

Hey thanks Solo1 with that ghost info, I do love visual aids! I get it now....and funny story! I did shoot the S510 at 10yards this summer. I was going to my shop from the house and this morning dove dive bombed me with some branches in his beak. Turns out a pair were making a nest (and a big mess!) in my shops eavestrough. Well I figured that would be an easy problem to fix. Sat on my deck againt the wall with my coffee and S510. Distance? 10yards or their about. Fired a round at 750fps (mid power) for center mass and it punched right through the trough 3/4 inch below where I aimed! Bird hit pavement dead and I sat in shock that I just shot my trough! Literally chocked it up to a flier pellet. Making sense now!! 🤦‍♂️😆
