First and Second Focal Plane Scopes – How They Differ​



When it comes to selecting a riflescope, shooters have a bewildering choice to satisfy their every need: fixed or variable magnification, sidewheel or objective parallax adjustment, 25mm or 30mm tube… and so on. Obviously, reticle design is also an important consideration when deciding on a telly, but perhaps less obvious is the focal plane in which the crosshair sits within the scope’s optical layout.

A riflescope’s crosshair can either be situated in the first focal plane (FFP) or second focal plane (SFP) – and as each offer significant differences on variable magnification (or zoom) scopes, it’s important to determine which type is best suited to your style of shooting.

The majority of riflescope designs feature a second focal plane reticle as they’re easier to produce and keep costs down, but most quality scope manufacturers now offer FFP scopes in their range. MTC Optics’ FFP scope is the King Cobra model which is offered in both FFP and SFP versions.

Both SFP and FFP scopes have their merits, so to help you make an educated decision when choosing your next optic, here’s a guide on each type.

Second Focal Plane (SFP)​


Sometimes referred to as ‘rear focal plane’, SFP scopes are by far the most common type. Their construction is such that the crosshair is placed behind the lens group that determines the scope’s magnification.

In the case of variable magnification scopes (eg: 2-12x or 4-16x), this second focal plane position means that the size of the reticle does not change as the magnification is altered. Only the target appears bigger or smaller as the scope is zoomed in and out, which means that on multi-stadia crosshairs, the relationship between the aim-point references on the reticle and the target will be different depending on the magnification setting.
For example, the distance between two aim-points on the crosshair may equate to 4ins (10cm) on a target when it’s viewed at 4x magnification, but only 1in (2.5cm) when the scope is zoomed up to 12x magnification.

Of course, the centre point of the crosshair should not, in theory, deviate when the magnification ring is rotated, although it often does on the cheaper scope models! However, if you use multi-stadia crosshairs like the MTC SCB2 to allow for ‘holdover’ or ‘holdunder’, then you must be aware of this target/crosshair relationship change. It is therefore best practice to familiarise yourself with the aim-point/trajectory relationship by only shooting on a specific magnification, like 8x.
This begs the question: “Why choose a SFP vari-mag scope, then?” Well, a zoom magnification feature is still a very handy feature to have, perhaps for spotting purposes where higher powers allow you to seek out a clearer sight picture. And many shooters also like to use SFP reticles for ‘bracketing’, where ranges can be estimated after having predetermined what distance the gaps between reference points equate to at each of the scope’s magnification settings. Although it requires some initial working out, reticles like MTC’s SCB2 and AMD2 can provide a very practical method of quickly estimating (or checking) range while taking aim.

First Focal Plane (FFP)​


Sometimes referred to as ‘front focal plane’, FFP scopes are usually more expensive by virtue of their more complicated construction, where the crosshair is placed in front of the lens group that determines the scope’s magnification.
In the case of variable magnification scopes (eg: 2-12x or 4-16x), this first focal plane position means that the size of the reticle will appear bigger or smaller, in line with the target image, as the scope’s magnification is zoomed in or out. Therefore, with graduated crosshairs, the relationship between the aim-point references on the reticle and the target will always remain the same, regardless of the magnification setting.
For example, the distance between two aim-points on the crosshair may equate to 4ins (10cm) on a target when it’s viewed at 4x magnification, and it will still be 4ins (10cm) when the scope is zoomed up to 12x magnification.

This makes life a lot simpler if you use multi-stadia crosshairs like the MTC SCB2 to allow for ‘holdover’ or ‘holdunder’. Why? Because you can shoot on any magnification setting without worrying about a change in the aim-point/trajectory relationship.
There are a couple of points to remember with FFP scopes. Because the reticle size alters with the magnification, the crosshairs will appear thicker at the higher powers and thinner at lower powers. Also, you cannot really use the ‘bracketing’ system for range-estimation. However, as bracketing data is quite long-winded to initially set-up, many shooters prefer to acquire the target’s distance using either a laser rangefinder, like the MTC Rapier Ballistic, or (on higher-powered scopes) the scope’s onboard parallax adjustment facility.

From an industry perspective, do you see an increase in sales of FFP scopes compared to SFP? Also, are there big differences in the ratios of FFP to SFP sales between different countries?

Most of my friends locally in New York, USA, still use SFP scopes. Does that make them typical, or an outlier in your experience?

I'm not looking for inside secrets, but it would be interesting to understand general trends, if you can share something. Thank you.
 
First focal plane is a popular choice to offer. there is not any particular pattern to sales for them in any country. I think many are confused as to what they need and listen to opinion which is generally more towards FFP, so we offer both in King Cobra to let the shooter decide. FFP are slightly harder and more expensive to build than SFP scopes, which is a downside, but a higher price is also taken to mean by some people as 'better'. I personally have had both and fell for the F1 (formular 1) hype when they first came out. the reality is most people set a scope on a particular magnification and rarely adjust it. Often that magnification is the maximum, and in which case second focal plane is better, as in FFP the reticule is optimised in size for the middle of the range of zoom making it too small or too big at the extremes.

I am looking to put a scope on my HW45 springer pistol. I was wanting something with some magnification for these tired old eyes. Does anyone have any recommendations that has extended eye relief that will handle the "springer"? (No junk please) Thanks, for the info!

The reticle divisions in a variable magnification, SFP scopes, are only correct at one specific power, and perhaps at twice that power if interpretation is used. In a FFP scopes, the magnification can be set at the user's discretion and still be accurate, regardless. This is an important attribute whether you use the reticle to range or not. After all, even knob turners must use the reticle for windage correction.

I'm of the opinion, that users of SFP scopes could benefit if they just took the time to adapt to a FFP scope. Unfortunately, few try long enough.
 
I'm accustomed to both but my preference goes to ffp for hunting use, easier and quicker imo. One thing to consider when looking for a scope that will fit needs is to decide on a magnification. I have encountered situations where new shooters will typically go for higher power magnification scopes and can't find a target at 30 yards. I prefer lower magnification for this reason, a nice wide field of view to be able to quickly navigate to a target.

i really dont care for the STP scope at all.
i bought a secound hand SFP think i could live with it but when it needed warnety work and i was told they where going to replace it ask if they could replace it with a FFP and tey said for a up charge i gladly paid.
 
I dunno, I'm constantly wondering how FFP scopes seem to have taken over the world. I don't really care for them, and never had a problem turning my scope to whatever power the reticle was calibrated at, getting my range and then dialing back to my desired power. I think it's interesting that people bought scopes with mildot reticles and moa turrets. To me that is a lot more of a PIA than SFP scopes ever were, and I know the math to convert easily. It still is a pain.
 
The first variable power scope I got was a FFP....not that I knew there were any other kind. This was a Weaver 2.5 to 8 power and the adjustment was on the rear mount so external. Suffice it to say, old...dates back to the early 60's. Anyway, the cross hairs were so fine at 2.5 that they were hard to see and so coarse at 8 that it was hard to maintain an accurate POA. Only used SFP's since....

as far as the mildot reticles and moa turrets not sure what company is still doing that?
 
Excellent write up. I’ve never found the need for FFP shooting 50 yards but I can see the appeal for the long range shooters
Its not about need. We understand that the trajectory for pellets can be quite an arc. If you are simply shooting at 50 yards? OK. But how about 10, 30, 40, 50, 60, 80, etc. IMHO anything over 65 yards with pellets “is” long range. Particularly in field conditions.
 
Confession first, I’ve not read all comments in this thread.

Something I’ve not heard conversation about with second focal plane reticle vs first focal plane is FFP ability to have more detailed reticles. I’ve yet to have an FFP scope but I can definitely see the value of numbered hashes.
 
I agree with Beanflip, in that I don't use the numbers—typically. After using a FFP for many years, I instinctively know where I need to hold over. If the shot is past about 125 yards, then yes I often refer to a cheat chart replete with holdover numbers.

One of the tricks is sighting in the scope at PBR (Point Blank Range). PBR isn't what your first thought might be. From Google: Point-blank range is any distance over which a certain firearm or gun can hit a target without the need to elevate the barrel to compensate for bullet drop, i.e. the gun can be pointed horizontally at the target.

In my case the scope is sighted in at 87 yards. So shots under about 75 yards, are hold under. If you need more information it is readily available on line.
