I'm sure that a fine book could be (has been?) written on this topic, but here I go anyway...
I'm even going to venture into the '70's a little bit.
Speaking for myself, I find that I warm up quickly to "old" Diana rifles.
Because I own them, I'll mention a D27 (mine is in .22), a D50b (mine is in .177) and even an early D45 (also a .177).
They have a great feel to them that is different than modern production Diana's. Even though there are many other "old" models that I've never handled, I suspect that they also share that feel.
Maybe it's shallow of me, but I also love the look of the era. One of my favorite rifles.is the D50b that I picked up not too long ago. I hated pulling the rear sight in favor of a scope, but the blued steel Weaver K-3W looks great and is much better for my eyes. Pic attached.
