Portable Shooting Bench-Homebrew

SPARATORE

HAM Shooter
Country flag
I recently decided to build a Portable Bench for shooting my Marauder .25 from useful products that I could adapt to my requirements and design. I combed the WWW for folding legs that could be attached to a solid wood table, there were a number of choices but none that met my needs. Adjustable leg lengths was a key factor as well as keeping the cost down.

Then I came across a Portable Metal Sawhorse, where the legs folded up into the base and were also adjustable. The Sawhorse has holes in its base so one can screw it to a wood top. I always have some wood/lumber in the Garage, and picked a 3/4" piece of laminate finish plywood for the top and some blocks for attaching the table to the Sawhorse. After the cutting was finished I placed the wood top on the Sawhorse... so I could balance and center it properly. Some fiddling around and I found the balance zone.

Buttoned it up with a handful of wood screws... and away I went to test it out. It worked very well, was extremely stable and comfortable to shoot from. I still have a few pieces left like cutting an oblong hole on one side so I can grasp it with my hand and carry it to the field and back to the Pickup. I plan to place a strip of vinyl to add friction down the middle for the Rest and Bags to sit upon...and finish the cut-ends with trim. Maybe stain the wood or just apply English Wax with some Elbow-Grease.

It is a bit heavy, mostly due to the all Metal Sawhorse but... for me, that is a good feature, plenty stable.

Metal Sawhorse Cost: $54.00 delivered to my doorstep. The rest of the parts were in the Garage. A piece of Plywood at the local Hardware Outlet, 48X48X3/4" typically runs about $40.00. A commercial Portable Bench as strong as this one, will run hundreds of dollars and won't be as rewarding as building it yourself.

Enjoy,

Don

Looks great! Thanks for sharing 👍

Looks great, I Have never shot from a benchrest position, but I understand that it has its advantages. Looking at your photos I noticed something and I wonder if I might make an observation or perhaps even a suggestion the bottle you have to refill your marauder seems cumbersome or at least has a high potential for getting knocked over. Of course I am being presumptuous that you leave it connected so I was thinking if you were to cut a hole in the top wherever appropriate and use either netting or some type of canvas bag, you could then recess it to an appropriate height for usefulness and stability.

Ah good observation. However, it was up there just for the photo-shoot, it sits on the ground in a Milk Crate along with it's backpack.

Amazon had all kinds of replacement folding legs / kits . Walmart had a decent 6' table for like $35 a few guys liked to use .. something quick and handy I guess . Still nothing like built your own 😉
I've seen those but I needed an 8 foot table.
Checking YouTube for Shooting Table builds though always bring up videos with hinged legs that are no longer available on Amazon, et al.
