100 yards for center fire, 50 for rim fire is the standard but what about air rifles?
It’s easier to compare when we shoot the same distance.
In my case I shoot a cheap Crosman 3622 and 1322. I get tight groups at 20 yards, not so much at 25. So 20 yards is my standard.
What distance do you setup for?

This all depends on how much you want to push the envelope. Ya field target with less than 20 fpe 55 yds is max they shoot. 100 yd bench is dominated by 30 cal and around 90 fpe. Then you have prs and nrl which gets out to 300-400 yds at some matches. Lastly big bore 357 and up out to 6-700 yds and pushing farther!

Me ive shot to 350 yds with a 25 cal. Mostly a 100 and in

It really depends on the match, but I would say you need to be able to hit a 1.5-2 inch target at 60 yards. Where I shoot we do not go past 55 yards. One lane has a 50 yard with a one inch target. We do that as most of us shooting have no issue with it.

I would encourage you to find a place to shoot and just go with it. I would tell you that as long as you understand you are not going to be competitive and you just want to see what it is all about you will have a great time. Most guys I know would let you try thier rifles with no problem. Help you come up with ideas that meet your budget if you want to go further. Often you can buy or trade within the group.

I love FT and HFT, just don’t get out as much. I can’t shoot FT due to health, but Hunter is fun. Great resources on here so search the forums and ask questions. Everyone here will help.

"It depends." There will be different standards for different airguns and different kinds of shooting. Extreme benchrest will have a longer distance, olympic style target shooting is only 10 meters, BB Gun competition is 5 yards/meters. Backyard pesting and target shooting is 20 to 30 yards.

Where I live, I mostly shoot in my basement at night when all the rest of the family is in bed, so I'm usually at 10 yards. I have a nice long back yard where I could shoot 20, 30, maybe 40 yards, but since there is a private road bordering the back of my property and another line of houses behind that, so I have not tried to do much shooting outside, YET. I am thinking of setting up a bench in an upstairs window, so I will at least be shooting downwards into the ground (and be in the A/C).

asked in the field target domain, so I'll give my 2 cents worth accordingly

regular FT is shot between 10 and 55 yards - 1.5 inch kill zone at 55 yards
long range FT at higher ranges, depending on the facility but about 115 yards max on the East Coast

There is your criteria for distances that the rifle you are shooting needs to be accurate.

For field target I set mine up at 30 yards. That's where the trajectory is the "flatest".

My 22 and 25s I usually zero them at 50. Unless it is my 100 yard bench rifle, I set it up at 100 yards.

Oddly I zero at 32 yards for my Sub-12 HW98. Where we shoot it makes my holds work out the best. I have a PCP for HFT that I zero at 28. I am splitting hairs 🤣 If you want to visulize the trajectory I use this site
