What'cha doing air gun related today?

Took a little break from Air Rifle Championship preps and shot the elf on a Shelf Christmas Challenge with my Daisy model 188.

This was the group that made me say the gun's got this, 3 inch or so circle on a dominoes pizza box.View attachment 18600

And this was the result of my poor skills afterwards. šŸ˜… I am not good with a pistol, marginally better with a rifle.View attachment 18601View attachment 18602
Well, on a positive note, a lot of little kids next year will be happy see ā€œelf on a shelfā€ survived the challenge. Looks fun.

Went out to the hills with the boys to do some coyote calling.. weather was erratic and mostly bad but we did call one in on Friday.

I was working the remote so he wouldn’t have been mine to shoot but he was no dummy. He came in super slow across the valley. Spotted at 500y or so and in this video he’s about 340 away. He got to about 280y or so and bolted. I stopped him with a whistle at like 400y and my buddy, shooting .223, missed a little left and then there was no stopping the coyote again.

But beyond that I had some nice terrain to do some plinking and I’ve got the 71gr Hybrid boat tail from BARS dialed in on the Zulus v2…I’ve tested the ballistic calculator out to 250y and it still makes me giggle every time.

890fps and I’m getting a .19 BC on those bad boys so still getting 92fpe at 200y! The barrel change on this gun is the best thing I could’ve done with this gun. Haha part of me has a little FOMO from not getting 31ā€ barrel and the extra power. But that’s first world problems šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

Looks like an awesome time brother! I've got the Karma SLS 25 which is great for most smaller animals due to it's lower power. I've been trying to trade for an EQ 30 but no one wants to let theirs go. That FPE is amazing!

What power are you getting out of it? Because it has the same plenum and I think same valve port size as the .30 cal… I would recommend just doing what I did a do a barrel swap… 24ā€ barrel is great as is for lighter slugs and super efficient pellet shooting but the 28ā€ Has made all the difference. In many ways it’s been a similar effect to adding a plenum to the barra. Since the barrel is longer the range in which I can use the hammer spring/dwell to tune effectively is increased… So I’m getting better power than before more efficiently because the reg is lower than I would’ve had it with the 24ā€ barrel.

I would suggest just buying a 28ā€ or 31ā€ barrel and having it machined to fit. Or have it sent to me and I’ll do it for you.

I’m just waiting for my new shroud to get it to fully unveil the gun. I have a way to make any length shroud you want and it will be a 1 minute change over. Actually if someone wanted a whole barrel system for this gun I could do that EASY… send an 18ā€-20ā€ barrel for a shorty, keep the stock barrel as a medium barrel and 28ā€-31ā€ barrel for heavy slug shooting. I could have those machined and with a custom shroud, tuned and sent back in less than 2 weeks.

I only say this because I think karma has missed a trick here. The way the barrel mounts into the stock is incredibly secure, stable and EASY to change. If they released some barrel kits and/or caliber swap options this gun could be a Swiss Army knife.

Anyways I will be offering this stuff as a tuning mod service. I’m calling it the Karma EQ HCT -Heartland Coyote tune.

The is my cold weather ā€œmediumā€ tune. Still getting between 20-25 shots a fill in 30°-40°F weather. This gun will likely push 130fpe for 30 shots in the summer heat.

I will also be offering a 62gr Varmintknockers slug option for people who might not want to shoot that heavy.

The reason I’m pitching you all of this is because I sincerely believe you could get one of those 60gr altaros or the heavy hyperline ELR slug going 930-950fps out of the .25cal EQ. You just need a longer barrel.

If any of this peaks your interest let me know. If you want the whole mod package it would be ā€œcheapā€ but it would be less than a new gun for sure. Based off prices I’ve seen it would be cheaper than even buying an FX barrel and liner assembly.

We go back to early Barra 250z days so I would likely do it for you at cost or barely above cost. Plus I would really like to play with a .25 cal version of this gun. You know how I obsess over the slug tuning until I get it just how I want and after 4 or 5 months I really feel like I truly understand this EQ and how to make it shine. I know people hate the trigger -mine is modded down to a hairpin haha- but for a hunting rifle this thing is incredibly capable and rugged.

You’ve come a long way in your airgun journey in less than a year. I remember you mentioning in your early posts that you’re a machinist. I wondered when you would make that next progression to combining your skills. Now, that you feel you have cracked the 250z and the Karma, it might be time to get your hands on a Ghost HP and one of those $170 LW slug blanks and perfect and prove a $300-$450 slug barrel that works. Lots of Ghost owners are looking for a slug barrel that works. Well done, I hope it works out for you. There’s nothing more fun than improving something with your own work. I’ve enjoyed reading about your mods and hunting. Hard Air Magazine definitely warrants the title of being the home of Barra 250z research and development lol. Keep the updates coming, I think @Pumacarl has retired and taken up fishing or something šŸ¤£šŸ˜‚šŸ¤£

Well said.... Yeah Pumacarl hopefully is just taking a break!
An absolute ton of folks (on Ham and elsewhere) have bought L.W. barrel blanks and had them machined to fit their airguns. I dont know the numbers of course, but it seems about 1 in 3 is a winner and the others are sub-paršŸ˜®ā€šŸ’Ø....definitely not a great percentage. I've ran the whole process/cost over in my head as well lol.

Yeah turns out this hobby was the perfect way to combine my nerdier interests with my love of the outdoors.

I would love to see what the block/barrel fitting of the ghost looks like. My new EQ barrel was a simple LW blank and it wasn’t hard to fit it to the EQ. Is it threaded or does it use o-rings?

If I could afford to buy one I totally would just to figure out a barrel solution. I’ve seen mixed reviews on Polygonal rifling but so far my experience is nothing but positive.

But alas I’m a a man with 2 baby mommas and the matching child support payments to go with it haha. I had to sell my barra to help fund this EQ build. But who knows what the future will bring.

Right now I’m trying to avoid doing what I did with the barra and jump over to the next project right away haha. Trying to become a better coyote hunter since that’s a completely new hobby I took up in the last year as well.

Your ghost idea is good and I’m open to other ideas. So far I really like building hunting slug shooters. Modding the gun is super fun but matching the right slug for the job is the frustrating part that I think I’m really good at. I went through many slugs for the barra before I found the Franco’s and probably twice as many with the Karma before I found the right ones. More power and accuracy is only half the battle in my opinion. What are the BC and expansion like? The 71gr got picked because of the high bc, accuracy and the fact that Rich over at BARS is using ludicrously soft lead that just devastates on impact.

I wonder if it’s because the machining was done wrong or if they aren’t finding the right slug choices. Also are they going choked or unchoked. The Lothar barrels are tricky. The less into the chamber on the unchoked is tight to get solid engagement with the rifling. They both have a BORE diameter of .306 in .30 cal but the choked section is .305. So slugs can absolutely be shot out of the choked barrels but you have to fit them right lol. With a choked barrel I’d start with a .303 an .304 un-knurled slug since my experience has been that the barrel loves an undersized slug…. It just takes work sometimes haha

I tried tuning down my S200. I went down to 65 bar. The hammer is just too much, so i ordered some springs to try. I was at 90 bar shooting 10.3 gr 740, only went down to 705. Im limited by adjusting out the HS due to stock fit clearance. I need to try the TP restriction grub screw, I’ve never adjusted that on this platform.

Hey brother really appreciate the services you've got going on the Karma! I would like to do some more on this 25 SLS but the holidays tapped me out until the springtime but if I do any of these mods to the rifle I'll make sure to send it to you. The longer barrel sounds like the right mod to start with including the longer shroud to get better speed, accuracy, and foot pounds. I've got a Skout 30 caliber moderator I'm using right now on it to prevent clipping and I think the larger size makes it a little louder than the Yokozuna, but both work great causing a very small impact shift but either are acceptable. I'm still having a little bit of a problem with the trigger resetting when using semi auto mode as the trigger in semi mode pulls a long way before going off. Regular cocking mode it shoots great! If you want to go ahead and give me a price for just the longer barrel mod please feel free to PM me the info, it's tax time coming soon and I might have access to the funds quicker. Thanks a million and I'm having more fun shooting the Karma than shooting the Barra right now! Steven

Fair point! I just have had other things catch up with me. At the moment there isn't anything that I want to do, with airguns, which I can't realistically do now, either. Plus, I don't want to water down my content by saying the same thing over and over again. It makes research really difficult when you have to read through long threads for a nugget of information. There is also the constant communication problem of having to explain yourself, or giving your bonafides, to every rando that wants to argue something. I've got better things to do than that. I have just about stopped posting at AGN completely because of that. When I have something worth saying, I will post it here, and that's about it. If I do another gun, it will most likely be an FX, I still have never shot one. You'll hear about that when it happens. lol

No worries at all there’s no time constraint… I PM’d you but my price will always be just above cost. This hobby is expensive enough and this is a passion for me haha. I have zero expectations of ever having Airguns pay my bills… this is just another way to get my hands on more guns to play with and make them shoot in a particular ā€œstyleā€ that I happen to think works really well for a medium caliber slugger.

It's cool brother! I sent a lengthy PM back to you on the Karma SLS 25 including fps, fpe, weights, etc. some surprising results as far as I'm concerned!

I bought a Beeman 1361 (synthetic stock 177 under lever) to set up as a rifle I loan out to friends that have rat problems. I have a lot of friends with chickens and livestock.
My objective is to get it to shoot sub 15 fpe. Out of the box it is shooting 10.3gr 1070 fps.

New hammer spring is in. Down to 12fpe. But I have to shoot an entire string to see what the curve looks like. Currently doing some barrel cleaning on lunch break. Shroud is off.

It’ll be interesting to see what you achieve, my wood stock version has the worst spread of all my rifles. I’ve been unmotivated to work on it yet. I believe my issue is the hammer spring.

That’s an aspect of tuning I haven’t really done much with.. specially modding a factory hammer spring. Even with the barra liked the slug weight with the OEM hammer spring.

It’s a whole other variable I need to explore.

Its a 76mm free length in mine, OD 10mm, ID 7.5mm, coil is 1.2 for my factory spring.
I bought this spring from amazon, all the same specs except length. I cut it to 70mm. I have it shooting 12 FPE now, but i will have to see later what the curve looks like. It was grouping 10.3gr well at 10m indoor. I shot 4 magazines with it, fill was 3000 psi. Mine is a 3500 fill model. I will fill it to max later when I do a full string. It would be nice to have 36-48 usable shots. It is just going into 20 yard and in rat duty, so it doesn't have to be hole in hole. I'm keeping that mindset with this rifle.
I wanted to keep a stout hammer spring, but shorten it, try and reduce hammer bounce these rifles suffer from. Maybe one day I will dip my toes in captured springs. But again, this one doesn't have to be super efficient, just kill rats.

I thought the same thing early on, honestly. The factory hammer spring is way too aggressive for what the rifle actually needs under 15 FPE.

After a full chrono + pressure study, what I’m seeing is that the rifle itself isn’t inefficient — it’s just badly over-sprung from the factory. Once hammer energy comes down, the spread collapses right in the mid-string.

In my case, trimming the hammer spring brought it to ~12 FPE and eliminated hammer bounce in the usable window. I’m seeing very tight ES in the center of the string now — the remaining issue is just shifting that flat spot earlier in the fill.

Long story short: if your wood stock gun has a bad spread, I’d put money on the hammer spring being the culprit, not the valve or barrel. Once you tame that, the 1361 actually behaves like a very efficient unregulated PCP.

I’ll post updated numbers once I finish the last trim, but so far the data says the rifle is absolutely worth the effort.

While i was recording my shot string I I also photographed the manometer after 24 shots all the way down. I uploaded my CSV and those manometer photos to ChatGPT to help me figure out my data and where to go next. I’ll be shortening the hammer spring again from 70 to 68mm.
I also had it estimate my psi for all my shots.
My goal is 36 shots, 3 magazines, and keep all the shots inside a quarter at 20 yards. Good enough for pesting rats.
