A Hawke Airmax compact rifle scope arrived recently in the HAM offices. Specifically it’s the Hawke 4 – 16 x 44 Airmax 30 SF Compact; to give it’s full, official description.
Now this is not exactly a new scope. However it is the first time that I have really looked at the compact a version of the Airmax family, so we’re sharing it here today.
In particular it’s good to look at this compact Airmax as – at just 11.7 Inches long, it’s ideal for use with the compact PCP carbines that are all the rage recently. So I mounted it on a new Air Venturi Alpha Compact, as you can see from the photographs.
In fact, there are three versions of the Hawke Airmax compact rifle scope range. Apart from the 4 – 16 x 44 model we have here, there’s also 3 – 12 x 40 and 6 – 24 x 50 models.
The street prices are all surprisingly similar at between $469.99 and $489.99. All have 30mm diameter tubes.
Hawke is very well in tune with the needs of airgun shooters, as we can see with the 10 Yards minimum parallax correction distance and Mil dot AMX reticle we see above.
Also Hawke’s “main man” in the USA – Kevin Sheehan – is a very enthusiastic Field Target competitor. So he is well aware of what makes a good riflescope for airgun use! That’s Kevin below, shooting at the Pyramyd Cup.
As always with Hawke products, this Airmax Compact scope is very well packaged and contains a comprehensive range of documentation, lens caps, cleaning cloth, big sidewheel and Allen key.
The magnification zoom ring is well-marked and easy to operate.
Also I appreciate the broad, flat-tops of the turret covers. That makes it very easy to lay a small bubble level on top to align the scope when mounting on an air rifle.
When removed, the cap reveals a re-settable turret with tactile, individual clicks. Nice!
The left turret incorporates two rings. The external ring controls ilumination for the etched-glass reticle. The internal one is for changes to parallax correction.
If required, the included 3-Inch diameter sidewheel can be added for finer focusing.
Interestingly, this side wheel is locked in place over the inner parallax-correction ring using a dedicated rubber ring. This certainly hold the big wheel in place without requiring the use of setscrews to pin the wheel in place. Excellent!
(Note that in the photo below, the ring is not completely pushed into place on the parallax correction ring. This was to make it appear more obvious as an illustration. When pushed right in, the illumination ring can be used independently).
So overall, and with a weight of just under 24 Oz, this Hawke Airmax compact rifle scope certainly looks a capable optic for smaller airguns.
