Rich Sarama is an enthusiastic Field Target competitor who designs and makes side parallax riflescope ranging wheels using 3D printing (also known as additive manufacturing) technology. His approach is to design specific wheels for each individual riflescope type, rather than to have a “one size fits all” standard model.
Rich sells his products under the B&BCustom wheels name. Most people know him as Bud and Brian is his son. They run the business together. They have produced a wide variety of scope wheels, including the one we are looking-at today. This fits the Gunnr Heimdall 6-24 x 50 FFP scope, which is available from Pinty.
I liked this scope a lot when reviewing it for Hard Air Magazine recently. So I showed it to my friend and HAM reviewer Doug Rogers. He liked it a lot too and purchased one for himself. Being impressed, he showed it to Rich, who immediately bought two!
Rich then designed and manufactured the sidewheel we see here today. I have to say that I am impressed with Rich’s work and so decided to run this story…
The spiral-design sidewheel provides enhanced rangefinding when using a riflescope at a range of critical distances. For Field Target shooters, that’s between 10 and 55 Yards. Better rangefinding means better control of elevation when shooting, hence more hits on the Field Target paddle. What’s not to like?
Owners calibrate their riflescope using their favorite airgun and pellets, producing a “range tape” which is then attached to the sidewheel. I just made a simple version to illustrate how it’s used in these photographs.
The scope is mounted on the HAM Gold Award-winning Pinty Striker Compact Bullpup air rifle that we tested recently.
The range is read using the red pointer that’s attached to the bubble level-equipped single ring that Rich also manufactures.
Rich’s side parallax riflescope ranging wheels for the Gunnr Heimdall scope are a very sophisticated design. They are robust and easy to use, yet cope with the unusual design elements of the Gunnr Heimdall scope.
The complete kit is shown below. There’s the clamp-on main wheel, of course, plus the pointer/bubble level and associated ring, the battery cap tightening tool and another circular part that operates the scope’s built-in illumination. Plus the B&B Custom Wheels cap that covers the end of the assembly.
