PCP with your favorite shot cycle? and why you think that is?

"Shot cycle" is a term we often see with springers, but PCPs also have distinct ways in how they behave when the trigger is pulled.....and that's what I'm referring to here.

Yes, shot characteristics can be improved through "tuning" and replacing hammer and valve springs, poppet material, etc. And that's probably an entirely different discussion....What I'm curious about is what PCP, in mostly as-issued/oem condition, has the best shot cycle (to you), and why? The rules are simple, no swapping/trading out parts or components, but adjustments to manufacturer's parts are allowed, if the gun's design allows (hammer tension/port restriction/reg pressure).

And this is opinion folks. Please don't get all miffed if me or somebody else lists a gun that you aren't coordinated enough to use, or if your favorite brand or type of gun isn't everyone else's pick. No need for bashing, fan boying, or any of the other immature and asinine behavior that we see all too often on the forums. Not only do we all have different tastes, but nobody here has shot every gun. Maybe we can learn of guns we've not personally shot, or get some ideas on how to "tune" one in our current stable to improve the shot cycle.

My pick for "best" shot cycle is a Taipan Veteran, especially at just under 20fpe, same platform in either .177, .20, or .22. By simply reducing the hammer tension (can be further aided by dropping the reg pressure but not necessary) it produces a crisp and snappy shot cycle. And not a violent "snappy" but a very subdued one, the word snappy referring to the quickness of the entire process. The gun sits perfectly still through the shot, no jump or recoil or muzzle lift. No wasted air, no hammer bounce, no perception of the hammer slopping around in the action as it does its thing, just a simple pull of the trigger and the pellet is very quickly and gently GONE, and a hole appears where the crosshairs were.

When judged only by shot cycle, the Vet beats a bunch of the high end sub 20fpe guns that I've tried (Daystate Delta Wolf, BSA Gold Star, MAC1 USFT, Brocock Concept and Brocock Concept XL, BRK Ghost). The Red Wolf at sub 20fpe might be about neck and neck with a Vet, but I still think I slightly prefer the Vet's cycle.

And surprisingly enough, even at higher FPE outputs, the Vet retains most of what I've described above. Now, of course a 50fpe gun is going to be a different experience than a 20fpe gun, but even a 50fpe Vet is pretty chill to shoot, when compared to other platforms putting out 50 fpe.

As to why I think it has such an enviable (to nearly all the other airguns I've shot) firing cycle? A very light hammer, in conjunction with a rather short and stiff (relatively) hammer spring. The dual transfer port let all the air get to the pellet QUICKLY. The gun weighs enough to absorb the Newton stuff going on. And the trigger design ensures that a trigger break and pellet leaving are seemingly instantaneous. I also think that the quietness of the Vet at just under 20fpe aids in the perception of a desirable shot cycle. It is quiet, and therefore implies that it isn't violent or obnoxious as it is fired. Only one sound is heard during the shot, not multiple brrrpps or blaaaattts or brruuummppps, just a nice quiet "pop" or "snap" if you prefer that term.

What gun produces your favorite shot cycle, and why?

Great topic!

The multiple KG Crickets I've owned are my favorite, but going to exclude them since all were purchased from pro tuners (Derrick Wall & Charlie Frear), & had work done under the hood to improve air flow.

Daystate Wolverine is nice too, but really should be given its sub-20 fpe & moderately heavy (even before the 30+ oz Hubble on top).

All things considered, think I'll cast another vote for the intrepid Veteran. Ergos didn't work for me, but it was very quiet & well behaved for the power level.

For me, there's two. Daystate regal in .22 and AAA EVOL in .22. The daystate was a beautiful shooter with 18gr pellets for 30 ft lbs. The EVOL is an ultra smooth shooter at 30 ft lbs and even as a 45 ft lb slug shooter it is a very docile cycle. I attribute both guns being being as accurate as they are because of the smoothness of the shot cycle.

I think you’ll hear a lot of guns being mentioned here purely based on the fact that it’s opinionated, and at sub 20fpe, a lot of guns have a very subdued shot cycle.
I owned 2 vets, but neither had a “tame” shot cycle. I would rack this up as the. Both being 25 cal, and both being over 50fpe. At the higher power levels, my evol 30 would definitely win the shot cycle contest. But the evol mini has a better shot cycle than my 30, and that’s a 27fpe gun. Then my brkrsnger would be better than that, but it’s a 15fpe gun. Honestly, what beat them all so far was my dream tac compact 22 shooting 19fpe. That shot cycle was unbelievable time, quiet, and accurate. Only reason I sold it was it had poi wandering issues, and I need first shot accuracy over smoothness.
now my tangent is over, my point was, shot cycle is in the eye of the owner, and with so many awesome pcp’s to choose from, I think you’ll get a lot of different answers here.

I really enjoyed all three of my taipans shot cycle, however my .25 was a very heavy long version with an HD50 bipod (BIG AND HEAVY) and an extremely heavy Element optics titan, @wolfmangreg owned this rifle and also mentioned it so that speaks a lot, all my compact veterans were very tame 25 fpe rifles. I think that has a ton to do with it.

Next up would be my original hps I had then my mini. I also had an MK2 Impact .22 shooting 33 gr zan at 1040 fps single huma reg set at 185 bar, smooth as butter, however again, that rifle weighed 15 pounds setup.

Don’t know about Veterans or Brococks both are out of my price range. The smoothest airgun I have is my Benjamin Cayden at 31.5 fpe. With a donnyfl tanto this gun is smooth and quiet. No discernible movement. At 45 yards a tack driver. The trigger is very nice also

My daystate wolverine r in .22 was very solid, and a joy to shoot. Then I bought a Red Wolf.177 HP. With a moderator fitted, all you feel, and hear is the air system working in the gun.

Man my EVOL has a great shot cycle, but I think the Red Wolf really wins out. Because there is no hammer spring the cocking effort is basically zero. The trigger is basically pushing an electric switch. And the lock time on firing is probably the lowest possible because of the solenoid action hammer

i cant speak much because i am only using the EVOL but i will say before i got the EVOL i was concerned about the cocking effort based on what i had read, after i got it though that concern disapreard quickly.
my wife who is pretty small had no issues.

i am sure there my be others that are snoother ,aybe better but i like the EVOl

Air Arms fan boi coming at ya...just kidding😅 I as well have only own 1 pcp but the .22 S510 FAC superlight shot cycle is flawless. the cocking arm has no play, there's is just ZERO recoil and it's 30 fpe all day long on high setting. I fill the gun in about 10 mins with a hand pump (taking 1 two minute break for o-ring life in between). No compressor required. Excellent air efficiency on her!

It's a toss up between my Daystate Red Wolf, and my Delta Wolf. They are both HP, .177, and .22 respectively. They are both great for the same reason, the Red Wolf may get the nod because it's a wee bit smoother. Properly moderated, you just apply trigger pressure, hear/feel the valves working, and it's off to the next shot. Side levers are very smooth. The entire process say "gotcha" every time.
