I ordered a Vanguard in .177 this morning as I don't have anything in that caliber. I need to get a moderator for it and am having trouble deciding between a Buck Rail and a Red Corn. I have no experience with either one. Not punching paper, just light duty pesting around the house. Which would you get and why?

Dear Vanman,

Congrats on your new Vanguard in .177! That is going to be a fantastic, laser-accurate setup for backyard pesting.

Regarding your question about the moderators, both Buck Rail and Red Corn Outdoors make excellent, high-quality units that some of our shooters have used on various Pinty models with great success. You really can't go wrong with either for light-duty backyard use.

However, before you spend extra cash on an aftermarket option, I’d highly recommend trying out the stock moderator that comes included with your Vanguard first. It does a surprisingly great job of taming the report out-of-the-box. Give it a shot on your property, and if the sound signature still isn't quite as backyard-friendly as you need, then you can definitely look into swapping it out for a Buck Rail or Red Corn.

Best regards,
Pinty Team

As a guy who owns both, either will do the job great. That being said, all of my Pinty guns are topped with RCO moderators because I worked with Angel on getting the very first Pinty aftermarket parts, starting with a moderator for my P-Rifle (Timber). So, when it comes to parts for my Pinty guns, Angel is my guy.
