Actually, we probably should describe the Primal 20 as a system. Yes, there’s the Primal 20 Gauge PCP which – in its shipping configuration – is a .625-Inch caliber big bore hunting rifle.
However, by simply changing the Invector choke at the muzzle end of the barrel, the Primal can function as a slug gun or a shotgun.
To support these two modes of operation, Umarex USA has also introduced two dedicated types of ammunition for the Primal.
First there’s a dedicated 395 Grain pointed sabot slug. Fired at up to 725 FPS from the Primal, these cast lead slugs produce up to 460 Ft/Lbs of Muzzle Energy.
Umarex says that these slugs are optimized for use with the Primal’s cylindrical choke and that the design includes progressive spiral grooves and side fins for stability. They are intended for use on large game such as deer, bear or hogs.
There’s also an included loading tool – It’s for loading slugs into the magazine, to make sure they are seated properly. (Yes, the saboted slug is pushed backwards into the magazine for loading).
The company tells me that usable range with these 395 Grain slugs is out to about 80 Yards.
Should you want the Primal to be a PCP air shotgun, simply change the shotgun-style Invector choke for an appropriate alternative. Now the the Primal can be a PCP shotgun, firing buckshot or birdshot.
To do this, you use the other part of the Primal 20 system – the Shot Shell Components.
This is a pack of 50 shot cups and wads that you load with between 3/4 and 7/8 of an Ounce of lead shot sized 7 1/2 or larger. Just measure out the shot, pour it into the cup and push the wad on top.
Umarex tells me that the range is 35 Yards-ish with shot. I depends on the size and number of shot in the load being fired, of course.
Both slugs and shot shells fit into the same, two-round, push-across magazine.
As with most big bore airguns, it’s unregulated.
There’s a straight-pull, reciprocating bolt with a substantial cocking handle that can be readily screwed-in to either side of the bolt.
That – plus the stock design and push-through safety make it totally ambidextrous. Even the 2-shot, “push across” magazine can be loaded from either side.
The solid, one-piece receiver has a Picatinny mounting rail for sighting optics. Should you want to use the Primal 20 as an air shotgun, you might choose to use a red dot sight, like this Leapers UTG CQB red/Green Dot Sight with 38 mm tube.
While, for use a a slug gun, you might prefer a riflescope, such as this Sightron S-TAC 3-16 x 42 scope mounted with Leapers UTG Pro P.O.I rings.
At 44.25 Inches long, the Primal is a large air rifle. At a bare weight of 9 Lbs 3 Oz, it’s heavy, too. That HPA tube up-front makes it muzzle heavy for sure, although some folk will like that.
Fitted with the Sightron scope, the rig weighed-in at 11 Lbs 5 Oz.
So, it’s good that Umarex has included 10-32 sling swivel screw mounting points both fore and aft on the buttstock. They will be used for sure by most owners!
Given the significant recoil, there’s a substantial buttpad fitted to the Primal 20.
Filling with High Pressure Air is undertaken using a standard “Foster-type” 1/8-Inch quick disconnect. Given the 393 cc capacity and 4,000 PSI fill pressure, you’re going to be using a compressor or HPA tank to fill the Primal!
Overall, the Umarex Primal 20 is an interesting new addition to the big bore PCP airgun market. The company is working hard right now to build guns and ship them into its distribution chain. So you’re going to see the Primal System very soon.
