Not a great evening. 3 grey squirrels with the Huben K1.

This guy was shot out of an oak and fell into a rotten stump hole.

A close up after pulling him out.

This guy was shot out of an oak and fell though an old dead cedar tree like a ping-pong ball through a “The Price is Right” peg board.

This grey hung out in an oak tree top too long towards dusk. We all heard the way he got “thumped” by an 18.1 grain diabolo pellet.

The pups weren’t interested in hunting this evening. Buddha Man was the main one wanting to run around and play. I spent more time than I would like to get him to understand this is not the time to run. But I get it, they’re still young.

After skinning the squirrel, it made a mess. The pellet appeared to have entered the right rear thigh and into the abdominal cavity. I don't know where it stopped, but my guess is the thoracic cavity. It did show a small amount of blood around the mouth. There was hardly much light left to see a lot of what I wanted to see when I skinned it. Parts of the internal organs were mushy and bloody. Skinning the squirrel was a literal mess. I ended up feeding parts of the squirrel to the dogs which is a treat for them. They usually don't get to eat much of the carcass.
Hate when that happens. I shot one outta the big oak in my back yard today. 20 grain Dead center hollow point, 35ish yard shot, from my tuned Avenger. Only shot he would give was his back door. Tail raised and all. Well, I took the shot. It literally flipped him head over paws away from the tree. He never moved when he hit the ground. The butt shot came outta his neck, and brought a nasty mess along with it. Needless to say, a quick call of here kitty kitty took care of it. That barn cat eat good this evening.

Haven’t had a need to squirrel hunt, but since I didn’t take any meat to thaw out earlier I figured I may as well grab something fresh. After finishing some yard work I headed into the woods with the pups this evening.

I didn’t come home with anything, but one of my pups jumped his first squirrel. One thing about it, if he says something is there then something is usually there. He keyed in on it and took off. I didn’t realize what he was looking at until he jumped on a tree. Then I scanned that tree and saw nothing, but out of my peripheral view I caught a squirrel working its way through the canopy moving in the opposite direction. I took two shots at him with my Huben K1, but he wasn’t stopping long and there are still many leaves on the oak trees. I missed both shots.

The pups don’t seem to understand squirrels as arboreal animals, but I’ll take what he’s showering me for now. He almost got after a doe too, but I’d already spotted her so when he moved to bolt after her I called him off and he obeyed.

Returning home with no squirrels with and a puppy demonstrating a natural ability to hunt them beats limiting out for a day. Once he’s trained I expect to kill hundreds of squirrels with him within his lifetime.
