Rex and the gang are putting on three AAFTA-style field target matches this spring.

April 3-4

April 30-May 2

May 29-30

The match that straddles the last weekend in April/first weekend in May is the inaugural AAFTA Grand Prix for this club.

More info on the GP here...

These weekends usually include a couple silhouette matches, shot with field target rigs. Simply put, they're weekends full of airguns and hanging out with airgun buddies.

Rex, Steve Q, and Tom recently put a day of hard work into site and course improvements, as well as making more targets and reworking some of the classics that have been used for decades in field target here in the Southwest.

That target hole on the bird looks tough. What brand targets are they?

Home brew.
The mechanism is a Air Venturi Rat on the Run. He beefs up the hardware and puts a heavy return spring on them. He also torches off the rat and welds heavier duty faceplates to them.
Rex buys the heavy duty faceplates from I think Richard Otten?

The kill zone on the bird looks to be either 3/8" or maybe 1/2." Per the Troyer chart, and for a legal AAFTA sanctioned match, the 3/8" can't legally be placed further than 18 yards, and a 1/2" kill zone can't be placed past 25 yards.

We sometimes put them further than that just for the fun of it though. Me, Rex, and Bobby C all shot a perfect score at a match last summer. 48/48 if I remember correctly. To break the tie the three of us were shooting at a 1/2" target @ 50 yards!!! We all hit it and had to go to offhand!!! We all missed it from offhand so they scooted us back to make it about 55 yards, still 1/2" kill zone, but from regular field target position (stool and shooting sticks in this case). I was the only one who knocked it down so 3 way tie went to me. Rex and Bobbie shot another round and Rex got it first so Bobbie ended up third.

Fun times.
