Shooting The KalibrGun Snipe 2 With 18 Grain Pellets

Today we’re looking at some targets HAM Tester Doug Rogers shot using the KalibrGun Snipe 2 with 18 Grain pellets. The range was 50 Yards.

Doug made this additional test for his own interest. He liked the Snipe 2 a lot and wanted to see how it would perform at longer than our standard HAM review distances. This took some time to accomplish as – whenever he had some time to make the test, there was either rain, wind or bitter cold: none of them being ideal for significant shooting.

Indeed – even for this test – he had to cope with a steady 6 – 8 mph wind for the first target. Not until a couple of hours later had the wind died down enough for him to try again in fairly calm conditions. It was not completely still, Doug said, but considerably better than for the first target.

Weather conditions are a major issue for HAM testing, here in Up-State New York. It’s very tough to predict when the weather will be calm enough, warm enough and not raining or snowing!

First we need to confirm that Doug shot the KalibrGun Snipe 2 in .22 caliber that we previously reviewed for HAM. It was the same Gold Award-winning gun.

Also, the same Gold Award-winning optics were used, the Sightron SIIISS 10-50 x 60 scope, mounted with Leapers UTG PRO rings. Doug used the scope set to 45x magnification. He also activated the red reticle illumination as the target was in a shaded area.

We like this scope! It’s big but very sharp and clear: a favorite for testing.

The main difference is that Doug felt the Snipe was shooting rather too hot for the 18 Grain pellets he planned to test. So he reduced the regulator set pressure to 60 Bar on the gun’s gauge. That’s a significant reduction from 150 Bar where it was when we received it (photo below).

That gave a Muzzle Velocity of around 835 FPS with the 18 Grainers. Instead of the 1,000 FPS plus that is was producing when we received it. Doug felt much happier with that…

In addition, he wanted to see if the gun liked the 14.3 Grain Benjamin Match Grade pellets. he was disappointed to see that they didn’t fare so well – at least not on this day.

Doug used his Caldwell StableTable Lite portable shooting bench for these tests. He likes the portability of this unit, but dislikes the fact that there’s always just a little unsteadiness to it. A couple of bags were used to support the gun.

So, how did Doug do?

Well, the best group of the day – if we exclude one clear flyer – was produced after the wind had died down by the 18.13 Grain JSB Jumbo Heavy pellets. The CTC group size for the remaining 9 shots was 0.46 Inch wide x 0.78 Inch high.

The best group size including all 10 shots was produced by the 18.1 Grain JTS Dead Center pellets at 0.85 Inch wide x 0.85 Inch high. Again after the wind had dropped.

Here’s the “light wind” target.

Below is the first target, shot in windier conditions. Interestingly, the groups on this target all have a CTC size that’s between 6 and 8% larger than for the same pellet in the lower wind conditions. That shows Doug was pretty consistent in his shooting!

In summary, Doug likes the Snipe even more! He’s impressed with the very solid feel of the gun when shooting, saying that it had very little recoil. That gave him a lot of confidence in its performance.

He also thinks that a concentrated effort to select “the right pellet” for it and then tune to the best FPS would definitely give tighter groups than he achieved on this day shooting the Snipe 2 with 18 Grain pellets.

He considers that this KalibrGun air rifle still has more accuracy to give!

JTS giving JSB a run for the money....I like it!😆 My S510 also prefers the 18.1JTS ever so slightly over the JSB 18.13s. The S510 was (i swear) designed to shoot 18gr ammo well and does so best @ 880fps on max. I'd bet if Doug got the speed up a little more they may tighten up as you mentioned. @FL22 you need to try some of em! Good price & clean ammo, but more importantly crazy accurate.

Now we need @hameditor & Doug to grab that tin of H&N precision 33gr slugs and do battle with the Snipe against the 18gr pellets @ 50Y!? 🥹 @AtlasAirguns tested the 25gr Jsb KO slugs already for us👍
Also: some people get peeved if you test in the wind and others will whine if you tested indoors in zero wind lol. What really matters is that you document the wind conditions for the test, that can make all the difference. Thanks.

I've already tested the 33gr H&Ns. Not so good. 35gr griffins, yes, Altaros, Yes, NSAs 25-34gr YES, 40gr Yes, 33gr H&Ns hard no. Obviously each barrel is different and sadly for those in the know: it takes about a whole day to truly write off a slug entirely.

Currently working on a video. I better put in aa bit of HAM advertisement on there to get some reference to these threads.

I have liked Kalibrgun for a long time, but I am so thrilled to be shooting this gun. I did send it down to an up and coming YouTuber to use for a few weeks and he has more time (no airgun orders, taxes etc to work on), and he will report back in video and in writing what he finds works well in the gun. I think that may be a refreshing take while I edit these 300gigs.

If you want more info on the Snipe 2, call me. I've learned a lot but it's harder for me to squeeze it into a review. I try to be succinct and entertaining, not wasting the viewer's time, but the cost of that is not having as much detail. I had a call from the Middle East today about the Kalibrgun, specifically UAE 😆

Also on the matter of the wind. I have heard both of these complaints. I understand both points of view. However, if I have one day every week roughly to film, keep in mind that I am typically driving 1.5-2 hours to the shooting spot where I can film, and the same distance back, and weather will sometimes be hospital but sometimes not - but I am shooting. Short of 20+mph wind, I'll be filming. If the wind is too crazy I'll use common sense and choose to shoot a different kind of a video, but I am not waiting for perfect conditions. My customers live in the same real world that I do, and sometimes my groups are less than ideal (everytime) because I am in the real world and I am not cherry picking the groups.

Man I should make a thread about YouTube and YouTube criticisms. "YouTube Review" threads are demonstrably entertaining to read for me. Now you got me going.

Also one last thing, I really appreciated @hameditor and crew doing this test showing the consistency between theirs, mine, and another couple that I have in stock. These guns do very well on the low power (and high power) settings. Interestingly, I have gotten the CHP and other affordable ammo to work well, but down at
..wait for it, 720fps with the 700mm CZ barrel. Might be worth a try. I believe this is due to the faster twist rate.

Regards, Tristan

Sorry😂... I hear ya there too, personally I like some meat in my airgun videos! Weather condition, ammo, speed, barrel twist rate, any mods etc....some people just want an entertainment "quickie"....I don't get those people😆

Well to be fair, if you do the heavy meat, people just sign off. Also brevity is an art. I try to pack in all that I could say in 4 hours into 4 minutes, which is especially amusing when some YouTubers try to do the opposite: they think a 3 hour tune video versus a 15 minute as a more meaningful work. I would put money on this: if you pulled their analytics, their video would have only an average watch time of 6 minutes....

Nah, my average watch times are more like 2 minutes. 🤷‍♂️😂
