What is Your Preferred Magnification Range — and WHY?

Please, choose up to two magni. ranges from the list:

3-12x, 2-12x, 3-9x, 2-10x

4-16x, 3-15x

3-18x, 4-20x

2-16x, 2.5-20x

6-24x, 5-25x

5-30x, 4-32x, 4.5-27x, 6-36x, 5-40x, and smiliar

I did not include 1-8x, 3-21x, 4-24x, etc. as these are pretty rare.

❓ What criteria do you use to determine what magnification range you want?

I'd love to hear how you arrive at your magnification range preference! 😊

Cheers,
Matthias

I think my 1x10 power scopes are good for short to medium range hunting, I would not want to go over 12x. Too much power can magnify the twitches and make things worse, and I like a wider field of view hunting. I like 4x16 for bench work out to 50 yards. I don't have any opportunity to shoot more than about 65 yards.

With my airguns I am mostly shooting tiny targets or I need extreme precision to make up for the marginal power, therefore I have zero uses for low power really. I actually like fixed power scopes from 8X up to 16X the best. They are getting to be scarce lately, not many options. The variables that are in the 3 to 24X range are certainly the most useful because their size can be kept reasonable, but with my eyesight going bad I really need to start getting some big glass to compensate and will probably be getting something in the 5-30X range soon, yes, an optical boat anchor. If my eyes were younger and perfect, for the airgunning I do, I would only look at 3-18, 4-20, 6-24 with never bigger than a 50mm objective or a 30mm tube, but those days are done.

3-18x, 4-20x and 2-16x, 2.5-20x works for me. My least preferred would be 4-20x. It’s ok for medium to long range shooting. I may have one scope within that range. I haven’t used a 2-16x scope. I don’t even know who makes one. All but the 4-20x tend to be offered in a compact package. I like a compact scope for use on bullpup rifles.

I like 2-3x magnification at a minimum for a wider field of view when I’m hunting. A usable reticle at low magnification is a huge plus as is an illuminated reticle. This helps for hunting in the shadows beneath the canopy in the woods. I’m currently using a 2.5-20x and I like it so far, but 3-18x is what I would’ve answered prior to acquiring the 2.5-20x scope. I also prefer and almost exclusively use FFP scopes.

What!?!?!? No 4X12?😱
Lol my all time favorite for a springer. If u need more then that your shooting alot farther out than I am. I keep my 2 (springers) inside 50Y for target and pest work, farther out once in a blue mood for some L.R. plinking.

For the 2 Pcps I have 4X16, (great all arounder and allows me to run a 44mm bell) and 6X24, which i recommend for 100Y shooting, bench, chasing slugs etc.

I'm wierd possibly?...i always get the smallest bell feasable, and keep it loooow to the bore.
Trying to shoot my Ghost @ 10Y with a 3 inch above bore high power scope is not something I enjoy!
On the bench i am usually at full power, pesting maybe 1/2 to 3/4 magnification.

Yes, it can get kind of ridiculous when you've got chipmunks right in a stonewall in front of you, if you don't have a low mounted and really quick sight.
The hardest time I have is when a squirrel is moving towards me or zigzag at close range. Having a scope on low power and keeping both eyes open helps.

I prefer lower power scopes on my springers and my two lower power rifles (Huntsman Revere and Stoeger Scout) and the higher powers of 6-24 for my AF Escape and my Huben K1. I don't really do any benchrest competitions, so I use the magnification only for within the hunting ranges these rifles will hit: 30-50 yards vs. 50-100+ yards. I also don't like a big scope that weighs me down when I'm walking through the woods. You'd be surprised how much every ounce counts when strolling around (scope, rifle, sling, ammo)
