After all, so much time and effort is spent on trying to obtain the best accuracy from our airguns. So much of that is connected with the barrel and the pellets or slugs being used. People talk of “winning the barrel lottery” – or not.

In fact, I would say that interest in barrels and ammo is at an all-time high among serious airgunners!

So – to me – it makes perfect sense to explore and learn about what the INSIDE of our barrels looks like. There’s rifling to inspect and leading to see, among other things.

One example. Using a borescope can give you a real indication of when your barrel needs cleaning, rather than just guessing. Is that too much leading in the bore, or just enough? Use a borescope enough and you’ll find out…

Now I certainly do not know as much as I would like to about airgun bores, but I can see that these is definitely a lot to learn. In my view, we all need one for our air rifles!

HAM has featured stories about borescopes in the past. Here’s a link to one of them.

HAM Tester Doug Rogers uses a Hawkeye rigid borescope. This is a superb, made in the USA, instrument. It also is able to fit into .177 caliber barrels. It’s also expensive, as you might guess.

Doug inspects the barrel of every air rifle that he tests and finds this a very useful exercise.

I use a Teslong NTG500 rigid borescope. This makes it easy to produce photographs, whereas Doug’s Hawkeye model is primarily a visual use device.

The Teslong also is not thin enough to fit into .177 caliber barrels. But it goes up to .40 caliber and so covers most of the airguns we review. At $199.99 from Amazon, it’s also a whole lot cheaper.

One other issue with Teslong borescope range is that I find their product names confusing. They’re too similar and I struggle with separating the models. But the range of borescopes produced by the company is increasing fast and there’s multiple versions to choose from.

Solo1 we are generally looking for burrs and poor machining. When you setup a barrel to first run on the CNC machine you want to make sure everything looks right before you take the time to test fire it. With the bore scope you can see that the chamber and lead-in are in the correct spot relative to the transfer port hole, and that the chamber tool is cutting well. You want the chamber to be smooth, with no large cutter marks. This is where you need to use caution with the bore scope. It magnifies the imperfections, and they can look terrible on a 34" wide screen monitor. In reality, the imperfections are so small it is pointless to worry about. We use a dental pick or mechanical pencil lead to see if you can feel the imperfections. If you can feel them, you have a problem. If the imperfection is filling with lead after you shoot it, you have a problem. If it just looks rough but shoots good, you don't have a real problem. If you look up machine surface finishes under a microscope and you will see what I am saying.

On the crown it is all about the burrs.

If we have bad accuracy we will inspect the whole barrel. A lot of time we find debris in the rifling. Give it a good clean and all is good.

On barrels that have been around a while, it is all about how clean they are. We check them for lead buildup and lead flakes. It is fun to look at the barrels before and after a good cleaning.

Well i just received mine set up in about 5 min and might have found a problem in my worst slug barrel there are several large burs ( they stick out about the same width as the rifling ) so that gives me something to look at. Pretty interesting gadget. Would be good for a look inside about anything.

I’ve had one of these for a while, but mine isn’t rigid. It a must have for buying new and especially used guns. One of the first things I try to do is to inspect barrel. Another interesting thing to do is to bore scope before and after cleaning. This showed me exactly what my pull through cleaning kit was and wasn’t doing. It also let me compare the results of different barrel cleaning methods. If you want to know is specific projectiles are leading up your barrel faster - bore scope it. If you suspect that have an imperfection that collects lead in particular areas that can affect accuracy or maybe to show you the results of lapping or polishing a barrel - bore scope it.

I have the Tactical Bore Site scope and it was something I didn't need. Yeah .177 is rough, the adapters you get are just soft plastic. Since it only inserts about 4 inches of the rifle has a shorter barrel than the shroud like the JTS Aircuda, it's useless, no chance of holding itself in place.
Worked best in the Beeman .177s and The Diana's except for the Chaser because of the moderator, in which the thing got stuck and I had to completely disassemble the Silencer.
Maybe this one you have found is better.
