Others New drs tactical mk2

@Cantona256 I’m just glad that you finally found your way deeper into the rabbit hole, in spite of all the clawing and blustering 📣. It was a valiant effort on your part, but the lure was just too much.

At least you are not alone, welcome to the dark side 😈 (and a thinner wallet lol, hey there is always ramen or ketchup packets and crackers 😉).

Of all the prestige brands FX was always the one I was most curious about. I’m just such a dedicated slug shooter I was scared off by the barrel harmonic/POI issues.

I was always interested in the DRS but the power numbers offered in MK1 didn’t justify double the price of the 250z in my opinion. Especially since I got lucky with a really good barrel.

So when I saw the specs on the new MK2 I was super interested. Even then I wasn’t going to get one because I really want a .35 for coyote hunting.

The truth of the matter is that I was BORED. The karma has been great but in the dead of summer I don’t need 130fpe gun and it’s a pain in the a$$ to tune. Not to mention I’ve pretty much modded everything I could about it.

So I finally just had to admit that I love tuning and modding new guns as much as I like shooting them so I let the boredom destroy my wallet 😂😂😂😂

With all that being said… I’m impressed by the DRS. If it cost the same as the M4 I’d be furious. But is it $500 better than the EQ? Yes, yes it is. My heavily modded one would easily cost $1500 if you aren’t a machinist who can do is own barrels like me.

My HS tuning kit should be in today or tomorrow.

@Solo1 thanks for the heads up on the pin probe but I don’t mind the hassle. The whole point of this gun purchase was to go through the whole process from brand new to hot $hit hahaha

Ya know i really hate slugs lol. Went out today with the idea in my head that bc is everything. So i shot 40 gr am @900 to see how they would do. Got 15 shots at that velocity in about a 2” group. Shot zan 33 bthp and they shot worse but at 960 fps they shot 4” higher with the same 0 as the 40’s. Shot 33 am hex not terrible not great 2nd best of the slugs i shot but the 33 h&n precision shot the best The cheapest slugs won so thats ok by me i guess. I may just stick to pellets. Oh and all the 33’s shot 4” higher than the 40’s. So much for bc

Correct on hunting. It no 250 z is it? Lol
I find the overall shooting experience very similar in some ways. There must be something about the air over the barrel that lends a similar feel.

Also the barra is much quicker to tune and has way more of an available power band out of the box….

The DRS trigger is millennia ahead of the 250z trigger. It’s offensive to even compare.

The DRS chassis/stock again is so far ahead it’s like comparing an F-22 to a Biplane.

It’s hard to describe but the DRS just has a « je ne sais quoi » factor that’s impossible to describe but it just feels “smooth” in every respect. So far the accuracy is spectacular as well.

I will not fan girl over the DRS but the more I shoot it the more I wanna run away into the sunset and be with it forever 😂😂

Okay so I got my Huma goodies in yesterday and after much deliberation (i.e. cussing in English and Spanish) I ended up going with:

Huma Tuning Hammer Spring
13.2 gram brass weight
High flow pin probe

Why this configuration you ask?

Well my initial plan was to just add the tuning hammer spring and go from there. But honestly getting to the hammer spring is annoying. So I added the 14.2gram weight first.

Then I finally wanted to add a plenum gauge so I was like “if I have to degas this thing might as well add the high flow probe.”

Anyway make a long story short I did that. Tested it and promptly realized I had pushed the barrel to far into the block so now the magazine wouldn’t load.. FML

I handed loaded a string and right off the bat the slugs were doing 930 instead of 910… but the barrel flip was weird air usage was bad. I played with the HS adjuster and I wasn’t seeing much of a power band.

So after a whole lot more cussing I readjusted the barrel so the mag would work again. Then I decided to put the 13.2 gram brass weight in. I don’t have any slugs heavy enough to justify really blasting the regulator yet.

This is my first FX and first gun with a balance valve. Despite all my bluster I’m a bit more cautious and meticulous of a tuner than I let on. Sometimes 😂😂😂

Anyways back out to the shooting spot. lol normally I can shoot from my porch since I live in BFE. But I got a pretty little blonde girl who lives in town and try as I might she finds ways to keep me at her house😂😂. So I’m slightly inconvenienced by this and wanna cry about my first world problems for a second!

Anyways, I upped the reg to 125-130ish. I can see why people get digital gauges now haha. I had the HS about halfway in and first shot was 970fps instead of 910fps. Granted the regulator has been upped but after adding the gauge it turns out I was closer to 110 BAR after my initial experiments.

So after playing with it I backed off the HS a little and I have them going 956-959fps… by far the tightest ES I’ve seen out of this gun so far. I’m sure if I sat down and shot a whole 25-30 shot string it would probably be closer to 5 or 6fps on the extreme spread but that’s still good enough in my opinion.

I really just hunt with these guns y’all. It’s why I always shoot slugs and I care a lot about FPE. That being said, I have no doubt that you could fine tune that ES even tighter. Making any mod to the gun is super annoying. Getting to the regular is annoying but can be done without taking everything off. Every click of the HS spring has a big effect.

I think it would shock y’all how few rounds it takes to tune this gun. I’ve shot maybe 150 slugs total. All the same 43.7 HEX Slugs. About 50 or 60 have just been re-zero’ing from constantly take the scope and rail on and off haha.

I’m kidding it’s literally never taken more than 3 shots to zero this gun on the Zulus.

But yeah it’s a headache for anyone who wants to mod it at all, but it’s tuner’s dream. It’s a shooters dream too. Don’t let the length fool you. I honestly think it just photographs long because it doesn’t feel long. Even with my little T-Rex arms shooting offhand is not difficult.

Side note:

I REALLY think Corbin is onto something with these HEX slugs. Seems like a happy medium between the hybrids and a normal hollow point slug. They shoot incredibly well out of the heavy slug liner. They expand magnificently even when shot 850fps at the muzzle. But they definitely penetrate deeper than a hybrid. Some of you will think I’m crazy for saying this but if I saw one of our little 20-25lbs desert coyotes I wouldn’t hesitate taking a (good quality) shot out to even 150y.

The numbers say that’s dumb and I agree. But the eye test is different. I’m getting a better then expected BC of .105 out of them and good lord they hit hard.

After tuning I absolutely sh-blasted a squirrel at 65y.. the thump from the extra 50fps is noticeable. I’ll post the video later.

Ok so its things like this that give fx a bad rap. I pulled the barrel on the 700 as i have a solid barrel inbound should be here tomorrow. When i did the oring (14id x2 m) was already cut in 2 places from the flats cut in the tp to locate the barrel. Luckily i ordered some orings from amazon that will be here tomorrow. I filed all edges on the stock barrel incase i ever put it back to give the oring a chance to slip over instead of being cut by a sharp edge. IMG_0938.webp

That is exactly the type of thing I was talking about in my G3 thread about totally prepping a gun before I take a shot. On my FX, I bought a Huma port and it was super sharp too. It got sanded smooth before it ever went in the gun. That is the kind of thing you don't find out about unless you go looking and the best time to find out is right up front.

Well i will say for most people its not necessary to pull the barrel. But also it only takes a minute or 2 for this to be done at the factory and i would not have to replace an oring or try to figure out where the leak is down the road.

Well, maybe not necessary for most people, but every gun will need its barrel pulled eventually by someone because orings don't last forever. You know that I just believe it's better to deal with the bear traps before you step on them, lol.

Well, all I can say is that I now I know my Panthera inside and out. It’s been apart down to the internals of the block, multiple times today. I don’t think there is any loctite on my rifle. I found loose screws another cross threaded screw ( or at least rough threads), the same rough spots as solo1. Replaced a few o-rings. I laughed, I cried. I cried more when I realized my two pairs of snap ring pliers were both missing their inserts. Hated the fact that I wasn’t able to access the valve housing and inspect the internals - I sure hope that wasn’t the issue. It was shooting so good yesterday 😢😭. It went sideways today and never ended. My impression today: FX has premium accuracy, premium looks, Champagne prices and Snowpeak workmanship and Pinty has better documentation. I’m not hating on it or them.

I hate to be that guy but it seems like I have amazing luck with these guns 😂😂😂.. because I haven’t even run a single patch through my barrel and this damn DRS is just spitting them out perfectly.

It’s funny I got lucky with the barra 250z barrel too. The karma is the only guy I’ve HAD to put in extra work to make it shoot how I wanted. But that’s mostly because I had a specific slug in mind.

Life just cracks me up because I’m supposed to be the “premium” gun hater and I honestly feel guilty about how much I love the DRS.

It makes sense though. As much as I like the karma there’s no doubt that until now my barra was the sweetest shooter I’ve had. Cut all the technical BS aside, because ultimately a gun is only as good and the person using it. I think it just comes down to my shooting style. The DRS just feels more “Me.”

Guys who have had the misfortune of reading my posts since barra days know that I’m obsessed with slug performance (expansion!) as much as anything else. This HEX slug I’m shooting out of it has me giddy. It surprises me that I haven’t seen Utah Airguns promoting it. The have no other options in .30 cal and despite my initial reservations I know this slug is a winner. I’m seriously considering testing it on a coyote.
