New Air Venturi Avenge-X PCP Arrives!

A new Air Venturi Avenge-X PCP has just arrived in the HAM offices. In fact, this is the Avenge-X Tactical model in .22 caliber. It will be the subject of a comprehensive HAM test review, but let’s look at it for the first time today.

New Air Venturi Avenge-X PCP Arrives!

At 43 3/4 Inches overall length with the stock fully extended, the Tactical version of the Avenge-X feels like a longer air rifle than it actually is. (For example, the Umarex Gauntlet is considerably longer at 47 Inches length, yet I perceived them to be of similar length).

At a “bare” weight of 7 Lbs 5 Oz with the larger, 400 cc HPA bottle, the Avenge-X Tactical is also quite light. Even with the large Sightron 10-50 x 60 scope mounted, a full magazine of pellets and the Leapers TBNR bipod fitted – as shown in the photographs, the Avenge-X Tactical weighted-in at a surprisingly manageable 10 Lb 7 Oz.

Given the modular design of the Air Venturi Avenge-X PCP air rifle, there’s obviously a huge range of potential configurations available.

I mounted the big, sharp Sightron scope and TBNR bipod to channel my “inner sniper”. However, the Avenge-X Tactical configuration looks to be a good choice for benchrest shooting too.

The under-tank Picatinny rail is pleasantly long, allowing the bipod to be positioned well forward. The one-piece shroud/tank/rail support gives a very solid feel to the shooter in use.

The gun here has the 400 cc HPA bottle, rather than the 210cc High Pressure Air Tube. Clearly this will give more shots per fill, in fact Air Venturi specs claim 100 additional shots in .22 caliber. (That’s 180 versus 80 for the bottle).

Most unusually, the carbon-fiber HPA bottle has its own 1/8-NPT fill nozzle. Normally HPA “bottle guns” are filled from the action. This is one of many unusual details that add-up to make the Avenge-X such an attractive air rifle.

However the bottle commands a significant price premium of $230.00 over the tube for an otherwise similarly-specified gun. As with many aspects of the Air Venturi Avenge-X PCP platform, the modular design gives you the choice!

The test gun also came with two magazines. Standard is the 10 round model (in .22 caliber) that’s carried-over from other Avenger-family models. We installed the new high capacity mag – of course!

This high capacity mag holds 16 pellets in .22 caliber. That’s a significant increase, yet the magazine is not TOO big. It fits comfortably under the scope with high rings installed. That looks like another great feature for the Avenge-X!

Of course, the Avenge-X features a range of performance-tuning capabilities. These include externally-adjustable regulator, transfer port and hammer spring adjustment. There’s an adjustable trigger and easy de-gassing capability.

Then there’s the price!

The HPA bottle-fitted model shown here sells for $759.99, while the tube version is just $529.99. So, the Avenge-X provides approximately-similar functionality to the FX Dreamline range at something like half the price. That will be a very powerful driver for many shooters…

I think the Avenger platform, all of them, is an amazing value. The accuracy of the .25 that I used (1st Gen) was excellent with pellets and slugs, definitely the most for the least airgun. With that said, I am not a fan of that bottle. The nice thing about most bottles is that they are one piece, nothing to go wrong, nothing to check, screw them on, that's it. Nice! At least one part won't have problems. Putting both ends of the bottle to work, and adding an extra cap to lose is not ideal to me personally. Not only that, but going with a non-standard bottle, you can't just buy any bottle size you want. This was a problem with the Gen 1 Gauntlet for a while too, a bottle size no one had at first, in carbon fiber. Since this has two ends, I don't consider this to be a bottle at all, it is a bulbous carbon fiber cylinder. Which is fine if you are just happy with the extra capacity it gives, but it adds more to the cost than an aftermarket bottle would, with no standard swappability. Overall I know it might not matter to many, but I would rather not see "bottles" going in this direction, so I am just registering my opinion on it, to those vendors that might be paying attention.

I recently received my new Avenger X Bullpup in .25. This is my 4th Avenger in my collection. I prefer the 210 cc cylinder. The reason for this is that all of the Avengers have been fitted with barrel bands to improve the accuracy. The accuracy now matches the highly accurate UX Origin (which uses the same magazines).
Although I have some very large, expensive 4-24x50 scopes, I prefer a quality 3-9x40 AO scope as this allows the mounting of a green laser on the BullPup. I have an indoor and an outdoor range to test the velocity and accuracy of the various guns.
With the green laser to initially site to target, I can rapidly adjust the scope for the outdoor target.
My air rifle collection was inspired by the air rifle of the Lewis and Clark expedition. This PCP air rifle had three chambers which could be hand pumped to 900 psi which required over 1000 pumps to pressurize it . I do not recommend a hand pump to pressurize an avenger rifle. There are a number of excellent moderately priced PCP compressors on the market.
