Others Is this normal or just the shooter?

Was going through my targets today from shooting a few days back.

I’ve been single feeding on the tray but pulled out the rotary mag and shot right after the group on the left to get the feel for it. Still new to PCP’s

The group opened up. This was at 50m using Zan 35g hp. Later on that day I did notice a fps drop and narrowed that down to moving my adjustment knob somehow but this was well after this opening group and good groups when going back to single loading.

Is it normal to see this while using a mag? If so what has changed…harmonics ? Would have thought that would be more of the barrel though interested to see if others have seen this.

Granted the Tiapan, (I wouldn’t think) is not really broken in yet due to my shot count from my logs but not normal from what I’ve seen it can do after tuned to the Zan’s.

This might have absolutely nothing to do with what's going on but it's worth mentioning. From my experience using a magazine I tend to shoot faster, when I single load it obviously takes more time and I tend to put more care into each shot. This might be because I'm a little more relaxed (have time to breathe) and not as tight as I might be on the gun when using a magazine. Aside from that as mentioned it could be a magazine issue that's not allowing the projectile to be loaded straight.

Good info right there. Never thought about that. Something to take note of when I’m out this weekend, thx

If you just have those 2 groups to show, it could just be a fluke? I'd repeat the same tests 1 or 2 times and then you'll know 100% the mag caused the issues. When you slide the bolt or lever forward to battery is it smooth? I have ran every .22 pellet known to man through my S510 and the H&N 21gr did NOT play nice while loading, there was a fair amount of resistance...the groups were predictably terrible.

Some excellent responses here!

Most magazine systems (including Taipan) aren't terribly complicated, but they do rely on components made to fairly tight tolerances. Doesn't take much misalignment to cause a problem. And with so many projectile shapes now available - from short & squat to long & streamlined - it's more difficult than ever to have a system that'll work well with all of them.

@Danman makes a great point too- small sample sizes can be misleading. Humbly suggest shooting several more groups with both the single shot loader & magazine, taking care to execute each shot equally well as Dana noted, before drawing any conclusions.

Thanks for the information all. That's what I'll do, printed some targets that have more of a pinpoint aiming spot to test both again and will concentrate on the points brought up in the comments.

Tom;

What you are seeing is a failure to load concentrically. When you use a feed tray every shot lays in the tray perfectly aligned with the chamber before it is pushed into the bore by the probe. When you use a magazine every round is aligned ever so slightly differently. Typically the pellet/bullet central axis is not aligned every time the same way. The end result is a larger group.

This is more obvious in guns with more wear or projectiles which are slightly undersized but that's pretty much what causes it. I suppose there are other causes but I haven't tried to consider every nuance.

I agree 100 percent but never to that extreme. To be accurate I all ways hand load, I think this is the very reason why Airforce Texan is a hand load pcp.

I have a little Storm Rider that I sometimes shoot with the loading tray in sometimes with the magazine. I don't know what range his groups are at but at 40 yards it is not unusual for mine to demonstrate that much variance between the loading tray and the magazine. It probably varies with the gun the shooter and the pellet

These were at 50m. Be out with it all day tomorrow so hope to check it out more. Should be fun.

By the way. Thanks for your service. Grunt. Nice blue braid you have there. ;)
