Tuning How do you prep a new barrel?

Wanted to give a through explanation of the steps I take for most of my reviews and figured I would start of from the beginning. What you will find below is my take on barrel prep, including a polish and clean.

Nice Video Chad!

I like the idea of pushing the barrel up against the wall. I cannot do that, so I put the rod and mop in to the correct distance and put a ring of tape around the rod. This helps me to stop in the right spot before the mop exits the crown.

He did have 2 things backward. If he did 40 on breach end then 40 on breach and middle then 40 whole barrel thats 120 on breach and 40 on crown. Jb bore paste is a cleaner. Jb bore bright is the polish.

As for Bore Past vs Bore Bright this is the research.

J-B Bore Paste (Non-Embedding Compound) is a coarser, aggressive cleaner designed to remove copper and carbon fouling, while Bore Bright is a much finer, micro-fine paste meant for polishing the bore to a mirror finish.

Correct a chemical cleaner not abrasive cleaner. From the package—cheaning with jb every couple of hundred rounds will usually keep fouling to a minimum.

When they say coarser, doesn't that mean more grit?

Interesting that it recommends a separate solvent. Wouldn’t that be the chemical cleaner? I don’t see anything on there that suggests there isn’t an abrasive in the paste?

Further research….

“J-B Non-Embedding Bore Cleaning Compound is an ultra-fine polishing paste, often described as finer than jeweler’s rouge or roughly equivalent to a 1000-grit or finer abrasive, designed to remove fouling without damaging rifle barrels.“

In regards to JB bore bright….

“While exact micron/grit numbers are proprietary, it is often described as extremely fine, sometimes compared to ultra-fine lapping compounds, often cited by users as finer than 1000 grit.“

Well as i was told the non embedding meant it did not etch or soak into the metal there may be some very fine abrasive but would you think they would use it just ahead of the chamber every couple hundred rounds if it was really abrasive at all? And why would they call it bore bright if it didn’t polish?

All good questions. But don’t know the answer. Tried to go with my research since the mfg doesn’t really elaborate.

@Airgun Advisor Well if you read the bottle in the pics above it says 40-60 full barrel strokes with bore bright to polish

Regardless of the products components, I like your thoughtful process for prepping a barrel, and that you always do it before shooting it, and you state why. This is the way.

I do my own variation of similar to what you folks described in this thread.
