Others Age and Optical Quality???

When I was younger I had 20/15 vision. My ophthalmologist told me, "you have fighter pilot vision". During that period of my life I bought and used scopes with lesser quality glass as I could see so well it really didn't matter for shooting performance.

As I have aged and lost my perfect vision I have found that I am forced to spend more on higher end scopes with better quality glass just to see well enough to aim and shoot accurately.

Any one else feel like I do about this vision change issue and optical needs?

Walnut and Steal has many older optics he swears by. And he often mentions the glass quality of the old scopes often.

Yep, I used to have both the expert rifle and pistol medals in the military but about 8 years ago high blood pressure caused a blood vessel to rupture like swiss cheese in my right eye causing my retina to swell so I have been getting shots in that eye at first very 4 weeks but now every 6-8 weeks for the last 8 years to bring down the swelling. This will go on for the rest of my life. That caused me to stop shooting for about 3 years but then I said the heck with it and taught myself to shoot left-handed. I am not nearly as good at it as my right eye used to be dominate and it still seems very awkward, but I still have fun, just nothing to brag about. I stopped hunting after a heart attack, but I really want to start up again, I guess I would have to debone it on the spot and try to pack the meat out. Can't picture me dragging anything out without having another heart attack but not likely to happen hunting from the ground on public land so I don't think I need to worry too much about it and just enjoy a nice nature walk with signs saying I am tuff and old, please don't shoot me. Every time I mention that I want to go hunting my wife says I have lost my mind.

My eyes are going too. Starting with cataracts and the floaters have gone nuts lately. There's blindness in my family so I'm not expecting things to get any better either, except for the scopes I buy!

You might want to contact one of the veteran hunting outreach programs. They might help you out with the hunting.

I’m 65, don’t wear glasses except for reading glasses. My recent upgrade to a 15-60x Ares was very noticeable to these old eyes.

Can't they suck out the fluid in your right eye and have replacement fluid put in it's place. My wife had to have that done on both eyes after they screwed up her cataract surgery. She's also had them drill a hole in the back of her eyes to relieve pressure buildup after some meds the VA put her on caused the pressure to build up in her eyes.

I thought I had floaters but it turned out to be MD. I've got a 4mm dead spot in the middle of both eyes. Getting old isn't for Sissy's.

No, the blood keeps leaking out and causes the swelling so all they can do is give me the shots. They tried to use a laser to seal it, but it is just to messed up and did not work. It's okay, I am used to it now, just a bit of a pain in the butt but we all have something that is. The only thing it affects now is my shooting, don't think I will ever do as well left-handed, just doesn't feel natural for me but I don't compete, so it doesn't really matter.

I'm glad it's not me having a needle stuck in my eye. I'm very very very sensitive about anything to do with my eyes. I won't even let the eye doctor dilate my eyes.

Yupp. I'm getting there, too....

➧ Looking at more expensive glass.
➧ Looking at higher magnifications.
➧ Looking at reactive targets.

All helps.



⭓ One good thing:
With age usually(!) come higher wages — so buying better glass might be a little more affordable.

⭓ Of course, for some there might be a downside:
With age our spouse finally figures out how much we really are spending on airgun gear.
And calls for a spending STOP!!
