Others 30 shot groups @ 50y

I've read about this in Field and Stream magazine among other places. The idea is that sometimes one can shoot a small group of 5 shots but the the next 5 shot group may have a flyer that opens up the group. However, if one is looking for the gun's most predictable and likely point of impact, the larger groups show where that is, including all the so-called flyers. This let's you dial in the true statistically predictive point of impact. 30 shot groups get you most of the way there according to those articles. The other interesting things is to measure groups as the average distance from the center of the 30 shot group, rather than just the circumference of the outside spread.

I have found it to be a valuable tool in determining actual accuracy of a pellet that I may have perceived to be good initially.

A perfect case in point the JTS 22.07 at 25 yards gave me an excellent 5 shot 1.06 MOA I believe.

However, the 30 shot group revealed that this is still not the best choice for my S510. Top honors still goes to the JSB Monster Lights.

On a personal note performing this type of test can be a bit tough on the ego, I can’t tell you how many times I have such a perfect 5 to 7 shot group and then simply watch it become annihilated.

If you haven’t done this type of shot test yet, there is a point where it just becomes ugly and then you fight the urge to go ball up the target and throw it in the trash, but one must persevere till it’s conclusion.

Do this several times with different pellets and focus on the data you get.

I have decided that I am going to eventually polish the S510’s barrel and having done this type of testing before hand, I will have at least in my mind, solid data to compare before and after results.
