250Z 250z - Working On It!

I'm just curious, what is an acceptable level for you? For me, if any pellet or slug, that I am really trying hard with, can't shoot a group that I can cover with a dime at 53y, it's crap. I won't shoot it any further.
My standards prolly aren’t quite that high but anything bigger than 1/2” groups at 50 yards isn’t gonna be good enough for me to keep shooting.

Still, if you were getting .5" c.t.c.. groups with all of those, that's damn good! Better, more consistent performance than my .22, that's for sure.

I can’t say I’ve actually gotten that with all those but I haven’t sat down to actually tune for all of them. I’m a bit of a Goldilocks and I’ve just been jumping from slug to slug haha. But yeah the only slug/pellet I’ve had any issue with was the Clyde heavy pellets…Honestly my main problem is I need like 3-4 guns to satisfy my needs haha. Now that I know how to adjust the hammer spring to find that “sweet spot” in relation to reg pressure it’s basically every week where I’m trying something new haha. Today I spent about 3 hours tuning for some custom made 35gr slugs lol.

But other than those Clyde pellets everything I’ve tried has been pretty good. No issues getting on paper or zeroing in with any of them. I haven’t tried any undersized slugs though, it seems to like .250 and .251 cal just fine.

None of the Barra pellets have performed in my 250z. When I purchased my 250z, Barra would not sell me the rifle by itself. They required me to purchase it bundled with their scope and two tins of pellets for a higher price . If it wasn’t for the fact that I had other pellets to try and I like to tinker, my initial purchase experience with Barra would have turned me off their products. I’m guessing that they don’t realize how bad their pellets are. Anyone purchasing the 250z along with their pellets as their first air rifle, might not realize just how accurate this rifle is with almost any other pellet/ slug. I’m sure glad I purchased a variety of other projectiles before I received the rifle.

Yeah, you're up for Sainthood with the service you got initially and the way you handled it all! I wasn't too happy either but I spouted off everywhere and made sure people knew the problems, no sponsership problems with me. I am really big with the idea of making everything known DURING the initial honeymoon phase of a new release because that is the only time most manufacturers respond and make changes, it seems to me.

Reading your experience and following along with your progress helped temper my experience. My TalonP arrived today and so that has most of my attention right now lol.
Me too! I have been shooting my TalonP today a little, and I have some parts coming. I ordered the aluminum breech, and a new guage amongst other things.

I did put on a 12x SWFA scope on my 250z today too. Using my laser scope changing kit I was zeroed without firing a shot, but I did just to make sure, and it was spot on, no adjustments needed. The gun shoots awesome.

Okay so not my best shot placement since I literally tore this dude a new a$$hole from 55 yards. But I’m still happy about this because this is why I’ve been trying to figure this slug thing out. Where I live in sw Utah it’s almost always windy and often swirling winds. I just wouldn’t have even tried this shot with a regular pellet shooter. Not because it’s impossible but I’m not good enough a shooter to make the right shot, but with a 35gr slug it felt way better… hunting with this thing is awesome haha.

I shot the 250z yesterday with the JSB KO 20.83gr .216 slugs, reg just under 2500psi, speed at 980fps, again, and yes, this is the way! Which is fortunate, because today I had 5 more tins arrive in from Utah Air.

The Barra is quickly becoming my favorite plinker. It is really annoying to shoot my other .22's after this one because I have to figure for so much extra drift. I am going to start saving this one for last. Another thing that I noticed is that the accuracy is still holding after about 150 slugs shot. That's a relief, considering how with some slugs I have to pull a patch every fill up. I figured the JSB would work better in this regard, it certainly does with their pellets. The 12x SWFA I got in trade for some pellets is working perfectly too. I like it much better than the 16x, but I am not sure yet, if I could only keep one, if I would take it over the 10x, too close to call for now.

That’s awesome news! I know the gun is rough around the edges but there is just something about it haha… Sunday I was playing with it (since I can’t stop tinkering) and put 7 or 8 slugs through the same hole at 45 yards and honestly I was giggling like a schoolgirl.

Yeah, usually I exclaim out loud, "HOLY SH!T" and then precede with the giggling.

Okay so I finally took a picture of a grouping today. I switched to 36gr custom made Franco slug from 35gr(cuz I’m running low 😭😭). They look most like NSA cup base hollow points. They are really really nice slugs and they are very affordable… anyway I had to tune slightly with a reg bump and tune. Reg set right at 2500/2550. Hammer spring about 1/8th turn from flush. *I have the slug power kit and thimble valve ported to 4.4mm…

I did shoot this off a tripod but not in a rigorous type of way. I shot this kind of fast and in very windy conditions. Mostly because I’m impatient haha and I’m a hunter I never get perfect conditions while chasing critters. My range is in a slightly less windy spot but it’s still not nice out there haha.

Anyways this is 7 slugs from 45 yards. Measured with laser range finder.

Don’t know the FPS because my chrono is loaned out to a friend haha but I’ll find out this week. I did shoot at a squirrel earlier at 114.8 and missed low. I wasn’t holding over at so like 6-8 inches of drop at that range. Either the slugs have a great bc or they are moving at decent speed.

You know, if you have all the info for your slug, L x W x Wt x B.C. already entered in to ballistics program, and you have the actual distance and amount of drop, you can calculate the speed of the projectile just using math, no chrony, and the number will be as good as the numbers you enter. Something to do, if you're bored and missing your chrony.

I do know you can reverse the function to get fps but I don’t have BC. I don’t think the guy who makes them has the equipment to do so. Also I don’t use a ballistics program. I’ve downloaded a couple to play with but I can’t really find a ballistics model that people say actually works for air guns. G1 gives bad BC numbers with increased fps. GA is more for pellets right? G7 works but for certain shaped rounds right? R4A is for .22 LR but works for air guns mostly but you need a different BC for it… it all kinda just does my head in tbh haha. Plus I’m still learning air guns and how to tune in general. This is my first real pcp. I started off with an Umarex Komplete in January… what do you recommend? I can’t find how to download strelok pro and I know some people love chairgunner but I’m probably not doing it right haha.

G1 and RA4 are pretty close depending on the slug and how far out you are shooting. None are perfect and you have to keep changing the number until it matches with how your shots are actually falling.

I love, and still use, Strelok Pro. I would suggest that you get a vpn and log in to the Samsung store, or some other foreign app market, from a node in one of those countries that you can still get it. Where there's a will, there's away, and I've heard that others have done this. Good luck!

GA is for pellets. Slug0 is another newer one that a lot of people use for slugs, I believe it is on MERO. You could try MERO. I have never used it, but have heard about it often. If I didn't have Strelok Pro, I would most likely check out MERO first.

Sadly there is not a MERO IOS app but I think I read that some of it got incorporated to chairforce?

Anyways yesterdays experience got me curious so I tested drop today and yeah 8.5”-9” drop at 100 yards.

Temp: 65°
Elevation: 2800ft
Pressure: 29.86
Wind: technically 12mph but I was in a ravine so not too much
Slug: 36gr “Franco” slug and this is the tricky part because he doesn’t have a BC for them. They look like NSA cup base slugs. I think his mold must be very similar because when I asked him he even said “they are very similar to NSA slugs.”

No matter what I plug into chairforce I keep getting numbers that don’t make sense. I’ll have my chrono back tomorrow so that will erase the mystery in terms of FPS. I can’t imagine they are going too fast since the reg is just at 2550psi and tiny amount of hammer spring. But they were at least going fast enough to completely flatten the slug.

Correct me if I’m wrong but 9” at 100 yards seems pretty good no? I mean I would prefer less.. and on a side note when my 30gr Franco slugs come in my goal will be to set up as flat a trajectory out to 100yards… but once I figured out the holdover on the reticle I had no issues hitting the twist cap on 20oz soda bottle I found out there.

Finally, I’m not trying any other slugs, except the fancy new coated Zan’s… because nothing has performed as well as the Franco’s and I’ve tried a lot of them. Being able to pick the weight is nice too. But yeah $31 to have 300 of them made and shipped to me. No lead shavings in the bags, deformed tips and very little denting around the base. They are shinny too. Idk if he’s lubing them or something but they rock.

The amount of drop doesn't really matter, just that you know it, and it is consistent. Of course, you want to know the speed, so you can figure for other distances but whatever the drops and holdovers are is of no consequence if it is shooting accurately. If the Franco's are working for you, and you chrono them and you don't like the number, use them anyway, change nothing except your attitude about what speed that you should be running at. You'd be surprised by how many shooters won't do that. Too funny!
