250Z 250z - Working On It!

The amount of drop doesn't really matter, just that you know it, and it is consistent. Of course, you want to know the speed, so you can figure for other distances but whatever the drops and holdovers are is of no consequence if it is shooting accurately. If the Franco's are working for you, and you chrono them and you don't like the number, use them anyway, change nothing except your attitude about what speed that you should be running at. You'd be surprised by how many shooters won't do that. Too funny!

That’s really good advice which I intend to take. I’ve shot enough different slugs now that most of them would work but these work best… and the drop matters to me because while hunting I don’t usually have the time to get out the rangefinder. The rabbits and a rare dove are the only thing that lets me get within 50 yards… the f***ing squirrels I’ve been trying to feed slugs to will scurry off anytime I’m within 90 lol…I put my Triton Starstrike back on today so that I can start recording some of these shots. It works well but takes a long time to adjust elevation and stuff. So I’m shooting constantly to learn my holdovers and such…flatter shooting also means better footage if I don’t have to hold the reticle way above the target.

It’s all good fun anyways 50 yards felt like something special 3-4 months ago. Now I’m banging Doves at 50+ and I let out a little whoop today when I hit that 20oz cap at 100 haha… I got a spot where there’s a big fat squirrel that likes to sun himself on a rock. The closest I’ve been able to get is about 125 yards away at about -5°… so 124 yards “true” distance… hopefully by this time tomorrow he’s dragging his gut up onto that great big rock in the sky with 72 acorns

Yeah I agree I really do need my range finder! Some of these critters are too wary to give me the time. I’m current plan is to measure set distances past 75, 90, 100, 110, 125… and just practice. Build up that picture in my head of what each distance and holdover looks like so I can reliably estimate. Luckily I don’t plan on shooting too many critters from 100+…. Treating this squirrel hunt as a challenge cuz if you can hit a squirrel from 120 in a nasty crosswind then it should be a breeze to smack a coyote at the same range haha…. And ultimately all the other hunting I’m doing is practice and tuning for coyotes. Long term I’m gonna port the whole block (hopefully an aftermarket plenum solution will come out soon) and tune this thing to shoot 40gr slugs haha.

I’d slap a mile of people’s grandma’s for a Taipan vet 2. Hell even a Zbroia would be cool. 2 miles of grandmas for one of those Skout’s tuned to shoot 60gr Altaros slugs at like 980fps


Chrono’d today and the 36gr were doing 870 and the 35’s were only doing about 875-880.. granted this is in about 50° temps this evening… but my new 30gr came in so I did whole song and dance… again. At about 2800 they will do 950 but I wanted to see what else so reset the reg and went back up and I swear this gun loves 2500-2600psi. So basically ended up with the same settings as before except slight hammer spring adjustment for accuracy. The 30s are doing 925-930 which is actually less FPE than the 36’s but I’m liking the what I so far… put 3 or 4 in decent little group from 75 yards.

I love this gun. I need to stop tinkering with it but then I what else would I do with my time, listen to my girlfriend talk about some influencers podcast?!?!?

You're supposed to eat the soup BEFORE you shoot the can, lol, you can't be in that much of a hurry!

I think you're right about the 2500-2600psi range too. I see a lot of people pushing these guns and it will be interesting to see if that works out for them, but no thanks. Running airguns that hot just means a lot more maintenance, down the road, which I won't feel like doing then. My brother has an original Avenger that he has been keeping at 2900psi that has been holding up though, so l might have to change my opinion on this at some point.

Okay y’all I think I’ve finally settled on my tune(for now ). It was cold when I got home last night so I wanted to re-chrono and just see where it’s at. Not to mention regulator creep especially since I live at 5k feet but often travel up and down 2k to shoot and hunt.

Anyways the reg settled at 2600psi. If it creeps it goes 2650 and no part of it touches the 2500psi line.

Chrono numbers today after 5 shots have already been taken to not skew with a hot shot:
Max:961
Low:954
20 shots per fill.

Easy 60FPE with the 30gr Franco slugs and my accuracy is at least good enough to hunt with.

I was just wrapping up shooting with my TalonP and decided to check accuracy and speed on the Barra while I was at it. It's still awesome! I got my first critter with it, a chipmunk at 62.9y. Strelok said said up 7 clicks, and Strelok was right! It is really loud when those Knock Outs hit. It's weird that just the other day I was shooting rather badly and today it was pretty good. The guns are all shooting awesome anyway, and that's one variable that I can control.

Hell yeah! Hitting a chipmunk at 63 yards is not easy. Funny enough I haven’t tried the JSB Knockouts yet. I hit my first Dove with the 30gr Franco’s. I suspected they would be loud and WOW haha… shooting these things is so much fun. RIP to my wallet cuz I have so many guns I wanna buy on top of modding the barra haha.

Educated guess....it's often made from peek plastic as it is strong and can handle some heat (giveaway is the white/beige color). @Sub12 airgunners has a video out on making such parts to also quiet the internal action noise down on lower powered rifles(plastic 'thud' vs metal ping). Or the oem version could have some issues and this replacement is an upgrade, but to be honest that's a question for the seasoned 250z guys!

Well I was just asking about these type of parts in general not just in relation to the 250z… I asked @Northeastbeast on insta and he said “the sealing power” so sounds like quieter and better seal?

Sitrep on my 250z, still awesome! Shot today, and while windy, it made no difference. Between the speed and the high bc of the slug, it put the pellet shooters I have to shame. I think that I am going to have to start stocking up on slugs in a big way. Pellets are not doing it for me anymore. You know the old saying, "comparison is the thief of joy" ? Well that's what I'm finding shooting pellets in my other .22's after shooting slugs in the 250z, more and more every time. I shoot just one shot with it often, and so far so damn good. I have not been cleaning the barrel either, which really really makes me happy. A no fuss, repeatable, first shot accurate, slug shooter, yee haw!

I love to hear that! That has basically been my same experience with this gun in .25 haha… I bought this gun specifically to shoot slugs and there’s so denying there is just something about it… my biggest issue is getting out of the habit of holding for windage… I keep forgetting that I get more spindrift than actual wind deflection …. Overall though I just know we all spend our money and our time on these things so it brings me great joy to see other people enjoying themselves. Because if it ain’t fun what’s the point right?
