250Z 250z - Working On It!

On a side note, I just traded some pellets for a 12x SWFA. The 16x SWFA will be coming off of the 250z. The view through the 16x is just way to tight, it is really annoying to use. Although it is precise enough, it does work well, it kills the fun, and makes you work too much for what the 10x version gives you easily. I am hoping that the 12x will be 'just right.'

LOL, and here I am considering going from a 5-25x to 5-30x. But, I’m not hunting etc., I’m in a quandary over my DNT TNC225R. I like the night vision, the thermal was kind of cool. But, it struggles with a white painted steel plate in bright sunlight when I’m sitting on a shaded porch.

Yip trade offs for thermal scopes are real. Give me something in between a good ol 4x12 to a 6x24 target scope with decent glass, uncluttered reticle any day. @Pumacarl the 18gr JTS are mint. They beat out my 18.13 Jsbs out of my S510... not an easy task! (LW choked with a 1:17 twist) They are definitely some of the cleanest pellets going too. Sadly their 25gr versions shot no better out of my Ghost than Mrds. I'd think the JTS and AEA stuff is about to get pricey in the U.S. with the Tarrifs now!?

You're right about the price going up, I probably shouldn't have traded so many pellets. I guess I actually don't care that much, this is my hobby, it's actually a bargain compared to a lot of the other hobbies I've had, even if the price doubles for everything for a while.

Okay everyone another update:

Slugs… since porting the thimble valve I tried shooting some .251cal 32gr Patriot Javelins and the gun loved them. In videos I’ve seen a lot of .249 H&N slugs being shot but my particular gun likes .250 and .251 she’s loose hahaha.

Pellets: since then I decided to give pellets one more try. Why? Because I like to shoot a lot. Everyday if I can and my slug tune was just too inefficient. 15 shots a fill generally. Also, 40 gr slugs moving at 880-890(I did eventually get them that fast) really limited my shooting options. Even hollow points were passing through stuff and the BC made me have to be extra extra cautious.

So anyways I went with an H&N 28.24gr barracuda and the 250 loved it. My best group was 7 or 8 pellets in like a nickel sized hole at 50 yards…in a crosswind. If I wasn’t doing a Michael j Fox impression the whole time I’m confident it would do better. But I’m a hunter not target shooter so good enough for me. The best part? Getting 915-920FPS for 50-53FPE and 35-40 shots a fill.

Mods:
thimble valve ported to 4.4mm from 4mm.
Rogue air slug power kit… hammer spring set complete flush right now.

Regulator at 2100.

Conclusion: I wanna shoot heavy ass slugs as flat as I can because I’m completely obsessed with chasing coyotes…But in order to do that the whole block needs to be opened up. Might need a bigger plenum too but considering I managed to gain 75-80fps from just the thimble valve and slug power kit maybe not. I think getting 40-42gr slugs up to 950fps wouldn’t be too difficult….. however this is my only gun right now and I’m too poor to buy another so the pellet set up gives me more versatility. Additionally the current tune lets me shoot 30&31gr slugs easily with just a minor hammer spring adjustment for accuracy.

It’s also back to being whisper quiet again which matters a lot to me since I do most of my pesting at night and in urban/suburban areas. Current setup lets me go back to annihilating collared doves in my GF’s backyard without freaking out the neighbors… at least I can blame the copious amount of feathers on the calico cat that stalks the neighborhood. She’s a savage.

I’m still a complete noob but I’m not so sure I agree with that, at least with the .25 cal…. I definitely agree that by making it .22 and .25 the nerfed some of the attributes that would make it super powerful. However NewJerseyAirgunner is getting 61FPE out of the 31gr grizzly’s and he hasn’t touched his block or valves at all. Just a Slug Power kit and the reg cranked up real high. I genuinely believe this gun will do 70+ fpe relatively easy….for me I’m just realizing that as much as I love chasing coyotes I’m really just a shooter. And I like to have lots of shooting options. I’m gonna get a new gun sooner rather than later. Probably a Notos or a similarly “sporty” option that’s not too powerful and light to carry around. Once I do that I’m gonna go fully bananas on the Barra and I’m gonna chase 80FPE…. Considering how accurate it is to 100+ yards with some 33 and 34gr slugs doing 850-890 fps I don’t think it would be crazy to get some 40-42gr slugs going 930-950 fps.

I do feel like Barra did a good job of under promising but over performing. The .25 cal is advertised as 900fps max and even before I ported the thimble I never had any problems exceeding that speed until I got to the heavier slugs.

If you're shooting paper, go for the higher power for sure, if the optics are clear on it. With fixed power scopes all uses have to be weighed against one another. I actually liked the 16x magnification, but the eye box on this particular scope is pretty bad.

I just got done shooting my 250z with the JSB Knock Outs 20.83gr slugs. I was using my tripod, standing, at 53 and 90y in a 3-5mph wind from my 10 o'clock, temp 47.

This gun is ready to go out and play! The KO's shoot just as well as the ZAN 23gr, as far as I can tell. There were no unaccounted for flyers or weird happenings out of either of these two rounds. The slight wind there was seemed to not have much of an effect at all on the KO's and at 90y I shot just under an inch. Very awesome performance and since these have a b.c. of .088 compared to the ZAN's .075, I will primarily be shooting these. If I decide to use this gun for woodchucks I will use the ZAN because I think that slug would perform better for bigger pests. The Knock Outs disintegrate when they hit anything, and I am going to have to really pick my shots, but I am definitely going to shoot a starling or two, to hear that pop.

The 0dB 110 is very noticably quieter than the STO Levitas. I think that being a .22 suppressor compared to the STO being for up to .30 accounts for a lot of that too. Neither had any effect on poi at all, which is really nice.

I will be putting the 12x SWFA on and when the weather warms up I will be touching up the paint job. I am seriously considering painting the scope and the 0dB on the gun. If everything comes out well and the gun is still making me happy, then I might have a case made for it like my Paradigm just got, more tactical though. It will cost more than the whole gun setup, lol.

Yeah, thanks, I'm pretty happy about it too. I really really tried to use an NSA slug but it just didn't work out.

The TalonP is up next, I will be asking you questions real soon about what ammo yours liked. The first thing that I'm going to do though is take it all apart and smooth down, clean and polish everything and change all the orings. I will be taking out all the grease and lubricants that I can, and use all dry lubricants, because it will be in the truck and dry guns don't gum up as much and the es is usually better, especially in the winter months. I kind of was planning to just use 34gr JSB but the more that I read the more I realize that this thing has the ability to throw slugs too. I never paid much attention to them because I thought that they were ugly and over priced for what they are. They are over priced, but I think that I was really wrong about everything else about them. I really should have started with them. Live and learn, even seniors.

I find myself looking at airforce rifles often due to their simplicity, mine was .25 , I shot 25gr to 35g nsa slugs .249 diameter, it was early on in my airgunning, I was shooting like .75 inch at 50 with them. I never took them further.

Thanks, I got some slug samples 33 - 38gr NSA from my brother today, so I will be trying them. Under an inch at 50 would be great. I don't have enough to run up from the bottom of the hammerspring to find the effecient spot, but I don't really care about it either. I just want five good shots.

I've had a talon P, a texan .257, and a texan .308 carbine.

I found all three just loved max hammer spring. Or very near it anyways.

I have found that my 250 will shoot pretty much anything accurately if I take the time to make the little micro adjustments to the hammer spring. It’s tedious but really works…I’m having a field day with these 28.24gr pellets too. To the point where I’m gonna order some 28-30gr slugs to try out… I haven’t tried any slugs under 32gr so far…. Has anyone tried shoot FX Hybrid slugs out of it yet. The 1:18 twist rate is pretty close to the FX slug liner twist rates. Plus the ultra long barrel really helps with slugs I think. I have a feeling this thing will stack those Hybrids if you get them to 920-970fps.

I have a .25 P15 with a 23" LW barrel on it (17.7" twist ) and it is pushing 50fpe with the 28gr ZAN slugs at 887fps. Not many people shoot the 28gr but it is a good one.

It does seem that the Barra in .25 is a whole lot less fussy about what it eats than the .22 version, that's for sure. The .25 has always been my favorite caliber for a reason. I am done buying any more .22 airguns for the foreseeable future. I have been shooting my Barra every day to confirm that its accuracy isn't a fluke and I am happy to report that it is not a fluke. It is very accurate with the KO's.
