250Z 250Z tuning, mainly slugs.

One of the things that I’ve learned about shooting from a bench is: the rifle should be on target without any pressure applied to it. If you are holding the sight picture by applying pressure to the stock, you won’t be consistent. Or another way to look at it is: you’ll be consistent, consistently random lol.
I’ve never shot benchrest but that makes sense… I want one to stiffen the stock for an arca rail.

I don't want to sound preachy, but you really don't ever want to be torquing down on your grip, even using an MDT chassis, and those can take it. The Barra is not a good candidate at all, for such tests. I just suggest a light to firm touch that you do instinctively and can do repeatedly. It isn't worth checking where your equipments limits are, unless you're willing to find out, and deal with the consequences. It is your dime though, do as you like. Just let us know what happens because we all are a curious lot. lol
I wasn't shooting like that. Just pulling the grip over and releasing while I looked at the sight picture to see how much movement there was. I hold the grip as light as I can when shooting. When off hand my left holds the gun to my shoulder and the grip hand is loose.

Barra plenum designer guy here .. just thought I’d chime in my observations with the 250z .. the .25 I have shoots literally ragged holes at 100 and has been able to shoot sub moa out to 200 on a calm day . I almost always pick slugs that are on the heavier side liking 40-44.5 grain range .. first initial thought with shooting is the trigger shape is garbage for my style of shooting .. took it to a single stage and sitting at a crisp 8oz with a custom trigger built from abs and carbon fiber , the rifle however also like pellets when backed off to 914 fps using pellets in the 29 grain range .

The chassis is something to be desired leaving me no choice other than offering a stiffener kit to make the forearm aprox 80% more ridged .. if you haven’t noticed the flex yet you haven’t shot it enough . It’s horrible, and seams that it was produced unfinished and as cheap as possible ..

Also have a Boyd’s pro varmint stock fitted for it and let me tell you it’s going to make a huge difference nearly blowing the drs out of the water .
I’ve seen several barra 250z in .25 shoot a string of 25-40 shots with zero deviations using both fx crono and garmins . And with 40 shots there was a refill after about 23-25 shots .

Groups at 50 are nearly boring without wind and in a 100 yard tube range downright impressive keeping pace with multi thousand doller rifles .

Plenums are on the list and I expect the production to start in several weeks but may take up to a month before start .

I will be testing various sizes but so far the first tested one netted me 44 fps gain and about 7 ft lb gain just by bolting it on and about 3 more mags of useable shots since I was able to drop my reg down to obtain previous speeds .

I have new porting desighns and poppet valve designed and I believe I can hit around 100 ft lbs respectively .

For those who wish to inquire about a plenum or any Barra candy please message me here or find me on face book at ARC printshop and Design . I have been doing prints and prototyping for several years with several happy customers and can do a bunch of exciting custom designs . My fb page is just starting out so please bear with me .I am not good with this media stuff and possibly have a guy just for the media to create some better quality reels and images

Hell yeah bro thanks for coming on here to let everyone know. What’s that’s being designed in the first picture and what are those black things in the second picture?

In email you said something about 30round magazines? Is there going to be a trigger kit option?

All of these developments are really really exciting. I’m not the only one in this thread that really loves this gun so more opportunities to mod this gun is awesome. I think it would be freaking awesome to have a 100fpe 250z

First pic was plenum design and prototyping . Second pics are the swing out single shot mags that allow longer slugs to be used .. I also have some 7 shot mags I drew up awile ago that also allow long slugs to feed . Tried the aftermarket ones and they seam gears more towards pellet lengths . The swing out mags are available .. and triggers I have a few out being tested and so far we love them

Heck yeah… I know those swing out mags are gonna be a hit with guys who like to single load….I lost one slug in that pellet probe hole and that was enough for me haha.

Besides the plenum and swing out mags is there a tentative timeline on when the other mods might be available?

Oh sweet! What’s the price for the poppet and ports? This poppet replaces the one in the valve right? Or is it a whole new valve assembly

I’m sorry for the confusion the poppet and port piece are just in the works and testing . I’m sure the receiver is going to need some machining to make it more efficiently sized if possible .It’s pretty limited. But not for long . I’ll try to get some ports made up and tested with the next few months and my goal is to break 100 ft lbs in .25 by December

Yes definitely keep us posted on that please.

I've got the H&N stacking. The AEA slugs are a work in progress. But the AEA pellets are hauling 20fps faster at 965 and pretty darn close to stacking.

I'm thinking I should hang some steel to the tree behind the target. If I keep this up I'm sure I'll kill the thing.

After working on the gun last week, including cleaning and lubing the reg, I've struggled to get the grouping back to where it was over the weekend. Part of the work I did was adding the stiffener kit and stoning the sear. The stiffener kills all the mloc's so no bipod for the time being, This trigger group is a PITA to work on. I hope to never need to take it apart again. But it is nice and smooth now and single stage now. I haven't touched the barrel in a while.

I shot a couple hundred rounds and after the first 20ish the reg stabilized. I started back at 2600psi shooting 950 +/- 5fps. I do have the slug kit installed and began with the hammer flush and made it about 1-1/4 turns in. I'd get two or three within 3/4" but the 4th & 5th would be 1 to 1.5 inches out from the group. No specific order to which ended where in those strings.
Now I'm up to 2750psi at 960fps. Hammer backed fully out, as far as it would go then bumped slightly in, and gone in 1/8 turn at a time to the point I'm 5/8ths in and about flush. Best three back to back were within 1/2", but again the next two would end the same as all previous groups.

Most shooting thus far was with AEA 30gr and H&N 30gr at 50yrds. I'd do a group with each before making a change. Prior to the work H&N 30's grouped the best for me at 25 & 50 yards. I'm trying to find a tune that will work with which ever one hits 1st. But trying to get something that works with the AEA due to the 250 slugs per tin, but I'll take what I can get at this point. I've also tried Zan and Wildman 30's occasionally with the same results.

Moving in to 30 yards things were a little better but the heat just got to be too much yesterday late afternoon as the sun moved into my area under the deck. I might have taken 25 shots at that distance before I called it quits.

How much time in between shots when you’re grouping? With reg butter your recharge rate will be really fast but the fact that it’s shots 4&5 that are flying on you makes me wonder if you’re still just getting some settling in the reg still. It took me a few days before I felt like it was fully back to normal.

I was using an aftermarket single shot tray. So, not fast follow up.

No, I will be happy with just hanging out at The BeACh this fall, for a day. I hope they have a good turnout, it is so soon after EBR maybe some will just head right over. As a spectator, I'll do a state or two, but that's about it.
Lol I remember awhile back that you warned
that Airgunnation was a little “funny” and boy you weren’t lying. I swear the fussiest dweebs in the hobby rule over there.

Sitting watching TV tonight I decided to do some slug measurements. I was kinda surprised by the results. But not having any prior experience my surprise is probably meaningless. Has anyone posted this type of info before?

Very interesting data! Yes HAM publishes this type of information in all our pellet and slug test reviews. Airgun Pellet Test Reviews Archives - Hard Air Magazine

In fact HAM reviews measure a sample size of 50 pieces for weight, length and diameter, as you'll see.

I commend you for measuring and documenting so many slugs. It's quite a task!

Of course results like this are the basis of why many top shooters sort their ammo.

It’s funny that you mention it because I actually have a post-it in my wallet with the length, diameter and weight of the 30, 31 & 32 gr Franco slugs. I did that because I couldn’t get the ballistic calculator app to work until I got the right length and that when I noticed that the Franco’s are long compared to a lot of other similar weight slugs.
